PATTAYA, Thailand – Two men were injured after an illegally made traditional rocket exploded inside a rented house in east Pattaya, on August 10, sparking a fire that nearly destroyed the building. The incident occurred at about 3 p.m. in Moo 4, Khao Mai Kaeo, with the house located only around 50 meters from Huai Khai Nao School. Police from Huai Yai Police Station, Banglamung district officials and rescue workers rushed to the scene following reports of an explosion.
The metal-sheet structure was heavily damaged by the blast and fire. Equipment and materials believed to have been used to make the rockets were found scattered around the property.
A 36-year-old man, identified as Amnat, suffered burn injuries across his body and was taken to Pattaya Bhattamakun Hospital for treatment. Another man, estimated to be aged between 40 and 50, suffered burns to his arm and back but did not require hospital treatment.
A worker at the property said he and the injured men had been making the rockets before the explosion. He said they were mixing and sifting gunpowder when he stepped outside. Moments later, he saw a spark followed by a loud explosion and flames rapidly spreading through the house.
He used a fire extinguisher to prevent the blaze from spreading to surrounding areas. Investigators initially suspected that a spark during the handling of the gunpowder may have ignited the material.
Police and relevant authorities will inspect the site and examine the equipment and materials used in the rocket-making operation to determine the exact cause of the explosion and whether further legal action is required.
