PATTAYA, Thailand – Police are expanding their investigation into the Huai Yai murder case after public questions emerged over alleged drug connections involving suspects known as “Pong” and “Thong,” while authorities said they have yet to find evidence supporting claims that one suspect was linked to a police officer. National Police Chief Pol. Gen. Kittirat Panphet said on August 1 that investigators are working to determine whether the suspects may have been involved in additional crimes, including whether there are more victims beyond the five already identified. Police have summoned people close to suspect Pong for questioning and are reviewing missing person reports in the area as part of the investigation.
Regarding the murder of two Russian nationals, Pol. Gen. Kittirat said the attack appeared to have been an opportunistic crime. The victims were travelling by motorcycle late at night on an isolated road when the suspects allegedly targeted them for their mobile phones and motorcycle.
He said the suspects allegedly impersonated state officials to lure the victims before carrying out the attack, indicating the crime was planned in advance. In the separate case involving a Thai family of three — a father, mother and child — police are continuing to investigate possible motives, particularly allegations involving drugs and drug-related debts.
Investigators noted that when the family disappeared, their house lights remained on and someone continued feeding their dogs, suggesting the disappearance may have involved prior planning.
Police also addressed speculation about possible sexual assault, saying initial examinations found no evidence of sexual abuse. The bodies have been sent for detailed forensic examination, while officers continue collecting scientific evidence, clothing, weapons and other related items.
Authorities have recovered all firearms believed to have been used in the crimes and are tracing their origins and purchase history. Police are also investigating claims that Pong allegedly dressed as a police officer to deceive people, along with reports regarding his mental health history.
However, police said they currently have no information confirming rumors that one suspect’s father was a police officer or that Pong acted as a drug courier for police officers.
