Military forces in Narathiwat have been granted wider powers to search, detain suspects and pursue those linked to violent unrest.

NARATHIWAT, ThailandSecurity measures have been intensified in Thailand’s Deep South after authorities in Narathiwat granted military personnel expanded powers to search, detain suspects, and take action against individuals linked to violent unrest. The Narathiwat Task Force issued Order No. 131/2567, signed by Maj. Gen. Yodawut Puengpak, commander of the Narathiwat Task Force, on July 22. The order invokes powers under the Martial Law Act B.E. 2457, allowing security forces to strengthen operations across Narathiwat and respond more aggressively to threats against public safety.

Under the new order, military personnel operating in Narathiwat are authorized to establish checkpoints on public roads, inspect suspicious vehicles, search locations believed to be connected to unrest, and detain individuals suspected of involvement in violent activities. The order also instructs officers to follow military rules governing the use of force. Weapons may be used when confronting individuals who pose an immediate threat to military personnel, provided actions are carried out under the principles of necessity and proportionality.

Security forces have been directed to intensify operations in the province, including searches, restrictions, arrests and temporary detention under the authority granted by the Martial Law Act. The measures are aimed at locating suspects involved in violent incidents and restoring peace and stability in the area. Civilian authorities have also been instructed to cooperate with military personnel in operations related to security, suppression of unrest, and maintaining public order.

The enhanced security measures took effect immediately after the order was signed and will remain in force until further notice or until new instructions are issued. Authorities said the move represents a major security effort to tighten control, increase pressure on groups involved in violent incidents, bring suspects to justice, and protect the lives and property of residents across Narathiwat.
