MANILA, Philippine – Thailand and the United States have reaffirmed their long-standing alliance and committed to strengthening cooperation on military affairs, cybercrime, and regional security during a bilateral meeting in the Philippine capital. The discussions took place between Thai Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sihasak Phuangketkeow and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Antonio Rubio on the sidelines of the ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Manila.
Both sides emphasized their strategic partnership and expressed a mutual commitment to enhancing comprehensive cooperation. Key areas of focus included military and security cooperation, combating online scams, and bolstering bilateral economic partnerships. The ministers also supported the conclusion of ongoing trade negotiations at the earliest opportunity to ensure mutual benefits. In addition, the two officials exchanged views on regional developments, particularly the situation concerning Thailand and Cambodia. They also discussed the ongoing situation in Myanmar, highlighting Thailand’s active role in facilitating Myanmar’s return to the ASEAN framework under the bloc’s Five-Point Consensus.
Sihasak raised the issue of U.S. import tariffs on Thai goods to support the Thai Commerce Minister in addressing the matter. He urged Washington not to apply trade conditions negotiated with other nations as a standard for Thailand, noting that circumstances vary by country and that Thailand remains a key ally. He also called for support to conclude the talks as the deadline approaches.
Rubio noted he does not oversee the matter directly but promised to convey the perspectives of the Thai foreign ministry and security officials to the tariff negotiations. (TNA)
