Thailand-Australia partnership develops eco pods for seagrass recover

Researchers from Walailak University and Australia’s Murdoch University are testing biodegradable 3D-printed pods designed to protect young seagrass shoots and support marine ecosystem recovery around Koh Lidi in Satun.

SATUN, Thailand – Walailak University and Australia’s Murdoch University are testing a biodegradable, 3D-printed pod to improve seagrass restoration around Koh Lidi in Mu Ko Phetra National Park in Satun province. The project is led by Walailak University doctoral students Patsakorn Jeenchuay and Leoniel Jude Giray, under the supervision of Assoc. Prof. Dr. Krisanadej Jaroensutasinee, with support from Dr. Alexandra Gulizia and Professor Andrew Macrae of Murdoch University’s Bioplastics Innovation Hub.



The dome-shaped pod is planted directly into the seabed with a seagrass shoot inside, allowing roots to grow through side openings while shielding young plants from waves, sediment, and marine animals until they become established. Made from the biodegradable bioplastic polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA), the pod naturally decomposes after the seagrass has taken root.

The technology addresses one of the greatest challenges in seagrass restoration, where newly transplanted shoots are often washed away, buried by sediment, or eaten before their roots can develop. Patsakorn is also studying planting density to improve survival rates and support healthier seagrass meadows.

The project also examines the benefits of seagrass conservation for coastal communities. Giray is surveying local fishing households and plans community workshops on the importance of seagrass, which provides habitat for fish, shrimp, and crabs while serving as the primary food source for dugongs.

Researchers recently surveyed Koh Lidi to identify suitable seagrass species and assess the restoration site, with field trials planned after prototype testing is completed. The project is supported by Thailand’s National Research Council, while Murdoch University’s Bioplastics Innovation Hub is providing expertise in biodegradable materials and making the pod’s blueprint freely available for wider use.
