Jet ski rentals remain popular in Thailand, but one tourist is urging visitors to inspect equipment carefully and seek police assistance if disputes arise.

PATTAYA, Thailand – Following a recent Pattaya Mail report on a violent dispute between a foreign tourist and a jet ski operator in Phuket, one tourist shared a personal experience they say highlights why visitors should exercise caution when renting personal watercraft in Thailand. The tourist described an incident from several years ago in which they rented a jet ski for just 15 minutes, riding away from the beach into deeper water before returning it. After the rental, the operator allegedly pointed out several scratches and demanded 5,000 baht in compensation.

The tourist said they believed the claim was fabricated and refused to pay, instead walking away without entering into negotiations. According to the account, an employee initially attempted to stop them before another person reportedly signaled to let them leave. Based on that experience, the tourist advised visitors who believe they are being falsely accused of causing damage not to negotiate directly but to contact the Tourist Police immediately. They argued that some operators may begin with an inflated compensation demand before attempting to settle for a lower amount.

At the same time, the tourist stressed that genuine accidents do occur and that visitors who damage jet skis through reckless riding, collisions, or other negligent behavior should accept responsibility and pay for legitimate repairs.

The tourist’s advice is simple: if possible, avoid renting jet skis altogether. For those who do choose to rent, they recommend booking through reputable hotels or licensed tour operators, or being accompanied by a trusted Thai guide, which they believe can help reduce the risk of disputes.

The comments reflect one tourist’s personal experience and allegations rather than verified findings. While concerns over jet ski rental disputes have surfaced in Thailand over the years, many operators conduct their businesses professionally. Tourists are encouraged to inspect and photograph the condition of any watercraft before use, retain rental documentation, and seek assistance from the Tourist Police or local authorities if disagreements arise.
