Heavy rain in Bo Win, Sri Racha district, Chonburi province, caused foam waste from a nearby recycling site to flood a housing estate, leading to a wall collapse and property damage.

SRI RACHA, Thailand – Heavy rainfall in Bo Win, Sri Racha district, Chonburi province, triggered flooding that carried large amounts of foam waste into a residential housing estate, causing a perimeter wall to collapse and damaging several homes. The incident occurred on the morning of July 4 at Bunraksa View 2 housing estate, Moo 7, Bo Win subdistrict, following overnight heavy rain. Floodwater reportedly washed large quantities of foam material—believed to be components from discarded refrigerators and freezers—from a nearby waste-sorting facility into the estate.

The debris spread across the residential area, causing widespread disruption and damage. One section of the estate’s boundary wall collapsed under pressure from the accumulated water and foam mass, allowing floodwater and waste material to flow into the community. Local authorities from Bo Win Subdistrict Administrative Organization (SAO), along with relevant agencies, were deployed to the scene to remove foam debris, clear drainage routes, and assist affected residents. Officials also began assessing the extent of the damage.

Athit Inprasit, president of Bunraksa View 2 housing estate, said the land behind the community is privately owned and has been leased to operators for long-term industrial activity involving dismantling used refrigerators and freezers. He said valuable components are removed, while large volumes of foam waste are left accumulated on-site. He added that during heavy rainfall, the accumulated foam absorbed water and was pushed by strong runoff, forming a dense mass that struck the estate’s boundary wall with significant force, ultimately causing it to collapse.

Residents reported that while seasonal heavy rain is common in the area, this was the first time such severe damage had occurred. They believe the large buildup of foam waste significantly contributed to the incident. Locals are now calling for urgent government inspections of the waste-sorting operation, including environmental compliance, waste storage practices, and legal enforcement. They are also urging authorities to assess damages and implement stronger preventive measures to avoid similar incidents in the future, ensuring safety for surrounding communities.
