BANGKOK, Thailand – A senior anti-corruption official on Friday publicly apologized and admitted to driving under the influence of alcohol after his vehicle hit and killed a 43-year-old delivery rider in Nonthaburi province. Jarong, director of the Bureau of Investigation and Special Affairs at the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC), met with investigators before addressing reporters. He stated he had been drinking prior to the crash, expressed deep remorse, and offered to financially support the victim’s two children through their education.
“I apologize to the victim’s family and to the NACC for damaging the agency’s image,” Jarong said, adding that he would attend the victim’s funeral and fully cooperate with the legal process.
Police initial tests revealed Jarong’s blood alcohol concentration was 189 mg%, well above the legal limit. He was temporarily released on bail using his official position. Jarong also denied allegations that he attempted to switch drivers after the incident, clarifying that he was traveling alone and moved to the passenger seat only out of concern for his safety when bystanders surrounded his vehicle.
