PATTAYA, Thailand – Pattaya and surrounding areas are being urged to prepare for heavy rainfall, localized flooding, and dangerous coastal conditions as Thai disaster authorities issued severe weather warnings linked to a strengthening southwest monsoon system. The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) said intense monsoon conditions over the Andaman Sea and Gulf of Thailand, combined with a low-pressure system near Vietnam, are expected to trigger widespread downpours and possible flash floods across multiple regions through May 21.

Authorities warned that low-lying urban areas in Pattaya could experience temporary flooding during periods of intense rain, while runoff from nearby hills and forest areas may increase risks on roads and near natural tourist attractions. Emergency response teams and drainage equipment have reportedly been placed on standby as officials monitor weather developments around the clock. Local authorities have also been instructed to closely monitor beaches, piers, caves, waterfalls, and coastal activity areas if conditions worsen.

Strong winds and rough seas are also expected to affect Gulf and Andaman maritime routes, prompting warnings for small boats and tourism operators to exercise caution. Swimming warning flags may also be raised on beaches if wave conditions intensify. Residents and tourists in Pattaya are being advised to follow official weather updates, avoid flood-prone routes during heavy rain, and monitor alerts through the government’s “THAI DISASTER ALERT” system and emergency hotline 1784.
