BANGKOK, Thailand – Former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra was released on parole on May 11, after 243 days in detention, entering a period of probation under close watch for his future political role and his influence on the revival of the Pheu Thai Party.
Analysts suggest Thaksin will likely serve as a “spiritual leader” behind the scenes to maintain party balance. This comes as the party focuses on rebuilding popularity through government performance, led by Party Advisor Yodchanan “Shane” Wongaswat and Pheu Thai Party Leader Julapun Amornvivat.
While his legal sentence for previous cases concludes on September 9, 2026, Thaksin remains under legal scrutiny for an Article 112 royal insult case. Despite a lower court’s dismissal, the case is currently in the appeals process after the Office of the Attorney General decided to appeal. (TNA)
