BANGKOK, Thailand – Minister Attached to the Prime Minister’s Office Supamas Isarabhakdi has ordered nationwide inspections of canned fish factories following concerns over product mislabeling. The Office of the Consumer Protection Board has been tasked with conducting detailed checks across provinces, including factory-level reviews and examinations of related consumer complaints.
The order follows a case in which canned fish products were found to contain tilapia that did not match the labeling. Although the issue has been resolved, authorities are treating it as a warning of possible recurrence. Inspections will assess whether similar practices are still taking place.
Minister Supamas also pointed to consumer risks beyond canned fish, citing a case involving bottled drinking water in Nakhon Ratchasima. She urged the public to be cautious when encountering unusually low-priced goods, warning that prices far below market levels may indicate potential quality or labeling concerns.
Consumers can report suspected violations to the consumer protection agency, which is working with other bodies, including the Ministry of Public Health and the Food and Drug Administration, to address such cases. Authorities are also stepping up public outreach while coordinating enforcement to address other pending consumer issues. (NNT)
