A health expert warns that combining heavy alcohol consumption, lack of sleep, and sexual activity may significantly increase risks of serious complications including cardiovascular events, stroke, injuries, and reduced sexual performance, urging better lifestyle balance and safer habits.

HANOI, Vietnam — Medical experts are warning that combining heavy alcohol consumption, sleep deprivation, and sexual activity may lead to a range of serious and often underestimated health risks, including cardiovascular complications and neurological emergencies.

Dr. Pham Minh Ngoc, Deputy Director of the Center for Sexual Medicine in Hanoi, said that using alcohol to enhance sexual desire can have the opposite effect when consumed in excess.

In men, alcohol can interfere with brain-to-body nerve signaling, potentially leading to erectile dysfunction or abnormal ejaculation. In women, it may reduce sexual sensitivity, cause vaginal dryness, and make orgasm more difficult to achieve.

She also highlighted the impact of poor sleep habits, noting that disrupted sleep cycles can significantly affect sexual health. The body produces testosterone during nighttime rest, a hormone closely linked to sexual drive and energy levels. Frequent sleep deprivation due to late-night social activities may therefore lead to fatigue and reduced libido.

Another major concern is the reduced use of protection during intoxication. Under the influence of alcohol, individuals may engage in impulsive behavior, including unprotected sex, increasing the risk of unintended pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections.

Clinically, doctors warn that engaging in sexual activity while physically exhausted and under the influence of alcohol can, in rare cases, contribute to severe complications.

One of the most serious risks is stroke, particularly among individuals with underlying conditions such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or vascular abnormalities. Intense physical exertion during sex can cause sudden spikes in heart rate and blood pressure, and when combined with alcohol’s effects on blood vessels, may increase the risk of brain haemorrhage or stroke. Warning signs include sudden severe headache, confusion, weakness, or loss of consciousness.

Another concern is acute heart attack, especially in older men or those with coronary artery disease. Physical strain following travel, heavy meals, or alcohol consumption can overburden the heart, leading to chest pain, shortness of breath, cold sweats, and potentially fatal cardiac arrest if untreated.

In women, medical professionals also warn of possible gynecological injuries, including deep vaginal tears, which may occur when alcohol or fatigue reduces natural lubrication and coordination. In severe cases, this can lead to heavy bleeding and risk of shock.

Doctors advise maintaining a balanced lifestyle and listening to the body’s signals. Sexual activity should be avoided when excessively tired, immediately after travel, or after heavy alcohol consumption, as the body may not be in an optimal condition for strenuous physical activity.

They recommend allowing adequate rest, ensuring proper arousal and comfort, and moderating intensity during sexual activity. Any warning symptoms such as chest pain, dizziness, or shortness of breath should prompt immediate cessation and medical attention.

Experts also stress the importance of condom use as a key preventive measure against sexually transmitted infections and unintended pregnancy, particularly in non-committed relationships.
