Bilateral talks focus on expanding Thailand–Laos energy cooperation and ASEAN integration

The Ministry of Energy has hosted a Lao delegation to deepen bilateral cooperation in electricity or petroleum sectors, with both sides agreeing to strengthen cross-border energy trade and regional power integration to support long-term energy security and sustainable ASEAN connectivity.

BANGKOK, Thailand – The Ministry of Energy welcomed a delegation from the Lao People’s Democratic Republic to advance bilateral energy cooperation and regional energy security.

​On May 1, Minister of Energy Akanat Promphan hosted Minister of Industry and Commerce of the Lao PDR Malaithong Kommasith, Ambassador Sisavath Inphachanh, and their delegation at the Ministry of Energy. Senior officials from the Ministry and related agencies also attended.



​During the meeting, both parties discussed energy policies and strategies to address the current energy crisis. They agreed that cooperation between Thailand and the Lao PDR is essential for energy security and achieving sustainable energy goals. Both sides are committed to strengthening and sustaining collaboration in the electricity and petroleum sectors. Key priorities include cross-border energy trade, Thai-led projects in the Lao PDR, and the Multilateral Power Integration Project with Malaysia and Singapore.


​These initiatives are vital for long-term energy security, economic development, and greater ASEAN connectivity. The Lao Minister of Industry and Commerce congratulated the Thai Minister of Energy on his appointment. Both parties expressed confidence in expanding energy cooperation to achieve tangible results for a secure and sustainable energy future. (NNT)
