Pattaya not as expensive as some claim for retirees living a simple daily routine

PATTAYA, Thailand – While debates continue over whether Pattaya is becoming too expensive, a walk through its bar-lined streets tells a more nuanced story — especially for a certain group of long-term foreign visitors.

Many of them, often retirees, aren’t chasing luxury. Instead, they settle into a slower, more predictable rhythm — one that revolves around modest spending and familiar faces.

For as little as 40 to 80 baht, a small bottle of beer can buy not just a drink, but hours of routine. In countless bars across the city, it’s common to see older foreigners seated comfortably, sipping slowly while chatting with Thai women who sit beside them, sharing conversation and company.

There’s no rush. No big spending. Just time passing.

What outsiders might assume is a nightlife scene driven by excess often looks very different at ground level. For many, it’s about connection — even if temporary — and a way to fill long afternoons that gradually turn into evenings.

Day after day, this pattern repeats. The same stools, the same drinks, the same exchanges. For some, it continues like clockwork until visa limits quietly signal it’s time to leave — at least for a while.

In that sense, Pattaya isn’t necessarily expensive or cheap — it simply adapts to how people choose to live in it.

And for these regulars, the city still offers something that fits both their budget and their routine: a place to sit, a cold drink in hand, and someone to talk to as the hours drift by.
