PATTAYA, Thailand – Authorities are warning that alcohol-fueled Songkran celebrations can easily spiral into street fights, dangerous driving, and serious accidents as large crowds continue to gather across Pattaya and nearby districts.
Police and military officers have stepped up checkpoints in high-risk areas, particularly around water festival zones, entertainment venues, and busy roads where drunken driving, loud motorcycles, and violent confrontations are more likely to occur.
In Sattahip, local police, naval military officers, and traffic units joined forces to inspect vehicles, screen for weapons, conduct alcohol tests, and crack down on illegally modified motorcycles fitted with loud exhaust pipes.
Authorities said both uniformed and plainclothes officers are being deployed to monitor crowds, reduce crime, and prevent incidents before they escalate.
Officials warned that many Songkran disputes begin with minor arguments, drunken behavior, or reckless water throwing before turning into larger confrontations.
They urged revelers to enjoy the festival responsibly, avoid excessive drinking, and settle disagreements calmly to prevent what should be a fun celebration from ending in injury, arrest, or tragedy.
