PATTAYA, Thailand – Large amounts of rubbish left behind on Pattaya Beach have sparked frustration among residents and officials, with many questioning why some visitors can carry food and drinks onto the beach but not take a few extra steps to throw their waste away properly.
Cleanup crews recently collected piles of litter from the beach, including food containers, plastic bottles, drink cups, and other packaging discarded across the sand despite rubbish bins being placed nearby.
Residents said the growing trash problem is damaging Pattaya’s tourism image and creating a direct threat to the marine environment.
Many locals took to social media to voice their frustration, saying the issue reflects a lack of personal responsibility among some visitors.
Several people suggested stronger public awareness campaigns, including loudspeaker announcements, leaflets at highway checkpoints, and higher fines for littering. Others called for tougher rules, including possible restrictions on bringing food and drinks onto the beach during major events.
Some residents said they had noticed large numbers of bottles and rubbish floating in the water, while others compared Pattaya unfavorably with Bangsaen Beach, saying they would like to see Pattaya improve its cleanliness standards.
Locals also stressed the importance of teaching children from a young age about keeping public places clean and taking responsibility for waste.
Officials continue to urge tourists to help protect Pattaya Beach by using the bins provided and cleaning up after themselves.
