A new regulation effective April 24 will grant overtime pay to security guards and property protection workers, replacing a 2009 exemption. Employers must now apply standard overtime rates for extra hours and higher pay for holiday work, aiming to improve fairness and labor standards.

BANGKOK, Thailand – A new labor regulation is set to take effect on April 24, extending overtime pay rights to security guards and workers responsible for guarding premises and property.

The measure replaces a 2009 rule that excluded such occupations from overtime eligibility. Under the updated regulation, these workers will now receive overtime pay under the same conditions as other employees.

Employers are required to pay at least 1.25 times the hourly wage for work beyond eight hours on regular days and at least 2.5 times the hourly wage for overtime on holidays. In cases where daily schedules exceed eight hours, such as shift work, compensation must still be paid at overtime rates even if total weekly hours do not exceed 48.

The change is expected to improve working conditions, ensure fair compensation for employees whose duties often involve extended hours, and raise labor standards across the sector. (NNT)
