Authorities tighten security and close the Khlong Pla Kang campsite at Khao Yai National Park after a wild elephant attacked and killed a tourist near a ranger station, with officials increasing patrols and warning visitors to avoid high-risk hours during the dry season.

PRACHINBURI, Thailand – Khao Yai National Park has closed the Khlong Pla Kang campsite and tightened security after a wild elephant attacked and killed a tourist on Monday morning.

Yosawat Thiansawat, Director of Protected Areas Regional Office 1, confirmed the urgent closure following the death of a male tourist. The victim was jogging with his wife near the Khlong Pla Kang ranger station at approximately 6:00 a.m. when he was attacked by a wild elephant known as “Plai Oy Wan.” His wife escaped unharmed.

Park Chief Chaiya Huayhongthong reported that rangers were in the process of pushing the elephant back into the forest when the incident occurred.

Authorities have now ordered increased patrols and joint monitoring with local volunteers in boundary areas. New warning signs will be installed, and tourists are urged to avoid activities during high-risk hours, particularly at night and dawn.

Yosawat noted that elephants forage closer to communities during the dry season, warning visitors to stay in groups and avoid provoking wildlife. The Department of National Parks expressed its condolences and confirmed that compensation will be provided to the victim’s family. (TNA)
