BANGKOK, Thailand – The Second Army Region has reported an incident that occurred on the night of January 30, 2026, in Kantharalak District, Sisaket Province.
At approximately 8:10 P.M., ranger task force personnel observed unusual illumination and assessed it as possible movement near an access route to Thai forces. Around 9 P.M., they heard a 40-mm grenade launcher, but could not identify its origin. Observers later confirmed the projectile landed in the eastern area of Phupha Lek Operating Base.
Additional lights resembling search activity were then observed, along with a straight luminous line similar to a laser directed at Phupha Lek Operating Base. Thai forces responded with warning fire in accordance with standard procedures. The situation returned to normal, and no further gunfire occurred.
Commanders from both sides coordinated to address the situation. Initial assessments suggest the incident was sudden and unplanned, likely resulting from a lapse in discipline by Cambodian personnel rather than intentional escalation. (NNT)
