PHATTHALUNG, Thailand – Culture Minister Sabeeda Thaised presided over the opening of Lam Pam Community in Phatthalung province as one of Thailand’s Top 10 Community-Based Tourism destinations for 2025 under the theme “Experiencing Local Ways of Life.” The designation recognizes Lam Pam as a model destination for creative cultural tourism grounded in local heritage, community traditions, and natural surroundings.
The ceremony was held at Ban Thanam Hua Non in Lam Pam subdistrict and attended by provincial leaders, cultural officials from southern Thailand, local authorities, residents, and members of the media. Proceedings began with a remembrance in honor of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit The Queen Mother, followed by a procession of traditional dancers, a cultural performance, and a symbolic casting of a fishing net, representing the community’s way of life.
Throughout the event, visitors viewed demonstrations of southern desserts and cuisine, exhibitions depicting daily life in Lam Pam, and cultural showcases along the Lam Pam Canal-side Market. The market features historic waterfront buildings and hands-on activities, including Nora beadwork, Nang Talung shadow puppet leather carving, and eco-print fabric production.
The Ministry of Culture has promoted community-based tourism nationwide under the Thai-Thai policy to strengthen local economies through cultural heritage and creative tourism. Since 2021, 50 communities across the country have been selected as model destinations, with Lam Pam included among the top 10 for fiscal year 2025 and receiving national promotion to support employment and local income.
Lam Pam Community is recognized for its historical and cultural landmarks, including the Old and New Palaces of the Phatthalung Ruler, Wat Wang from the early Rattanakosin period, the Monument of Phraya Khun Khang Lek, and the 300-year-old ordination hall at Wat Yang Ngam, all reflecting the area’s architectural and cultural legacy.
Natural attractions further enhance the community’s appeal, including Lam Pam Saen Suk Beach along Songkhla Lake and the Lam Pam Canal-side Market, where visitors can sample local cuisine and experience the rare tradition of alms-giving to monks by boat. Together, these features define Lam Pam as a destination that offers history, community life, and nature in one setting. (NNT)
