The Bank of Thailand assures that facial recognition systems used by Thai banks are safe and equipped with advanced anti-spoofing technology, following news of a Chinese AI scam gang operating in Bangkok.

PATTAYA, Thailand – The Bank of Thailand (BoT) has sought to reassure both Thai citizens and foreign tourists that the country’s banking facial recognition systems remain highly secure, following reports of a Chinese scam gang arrested in Bangkok for using AI-generated videos to trick financial platforms.

Daranee Saeju, Assistant Governor for Payment Systems Supervision and Financial Consumer Protection at the BoT, clarified that the recent case involved Chinese nationals testing fraudulent identity verification through apps developed in China — not through any Thai banking or financial system.

She emphasized that Thailand’s commercial banks employ stringent safeguards and advanced detection technology to prevent spoofing through fake images or videos. “Each financial institution must pass rigorous accuracy and security testing before deploying facial recognition for real-world use,” Daranee said.

The BoT further noted that the Thai Banking Sector Computer Emergency Response Team (TB-CERT) under the Thai Bankers’ Association continuously monitors emerging cyber threats. If irregular activity is detected, rapid countermeasures are taken to ensure customer protection and system integrity.

Officials reiterated that the incident should not undermine confidence in Thailand’s digital banking security. The country’s banks remain at the forefront of cybersecurity in Southeast Asia, ensuring that both residents and visitors can conduct transactions safely and confidently.
