BANGKOK, Thailand – Her Majesty Queen Sofía, the Queen Mother of Spain, has paid a solemn visit to the Royal Thai Embassy in Madrid to sign the official book of condolence following the passing of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit The Queen Mother of Thailand.

Upon her arrival, Queen Sofía was greeted by the Embassy’s Chargé d’Affaires, who was accompanied by the heads of Thai agencies and other senior officials. In a gesture of profound respect, Her Majesty first stood in a moment of silent tribute before a portrait of the late Thai Queen Mother before proceeding to inscribe her condolences.


Reflecting the deep personal ties between the two royal families, Her Majesty Queen Sofía fondly recalled her longstanding friendship with the Thai Royal Family during conversations with embassy officials. She spoke warmly of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit’s grace, compassion, and enduring legacy, expressing her profound sadness at the loss.

The visit included a viewing of photographs from Her Majesty’s 2006 state visit to Thailand, during which she attended the Diamond Jubilee celebrations for the 60th anniversary of the reign of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej The Great.
