BANGKOK, Thailand – The Fine Arts Department has begun drafting the design for the royal crematorium of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit The Queen Mother, in accordance with traditional Thai architectural principles that reflect grace, dignity, and royal honor. The department will also assemble skilled Thai artisans from various disciplines to contribute to the project, continuing the late Queen Mother’s legacy of preserving and promoting Thai arts and culture.

Director-General of the Fine Arts Department Phanombootra Chandrajoti revealed that following the directive of Culture Minister Sabeeda Thaisedt, the department has been assigned to oversee the ceremonial arrangements and the construction of the royal crematorium, along with related structures, royal chariots, and palanquins to be used in the Royal Cremation Ceremony.

A meeting was held to assign the drafting of the initial design for the royal crematorium and its accompanying structures, which will be presented for His Majesty the King’s gracious consideration. The design will adhere to traditional royal customs and classical Thai architectural principles, incorporating exquisite elements of sculpture and painting that reflect the utmost royal honor. Progress reports will be submitted regularly to the Minister of Culture for further presentation to the Cabinet.

The construction of the royal crematorium and its associated structures is presently in the preliminary design phase, accompanied by preparations for personnel tasked with restoring royal chariots, palanquins, and other intricate works of art to be used in the royal cremation ceremony. The department will also commence the compilation of a national historical record documenting events from the announcement of Her Majesty’s passing on October 25 onward.

The initiative embodies the shared loyalty and dedication of Thai artisans and Fine Arts Department volunteers in continuing Her Majesty’s vision to safeguard and renew Thailand’s cultural heritage — from traditional textiles, Khon performances and fine craftsmanship. (NNT)
