Up close and personal with the skies—tourists line Mai Khao Beach in Phuket for epic plane selfies against pristine white sand and sparkling sea.

PHUKET, Thailand – When a massive airplane appears overhead, seemingly within arm’s reach, and combines with the wide stretch of white sand and sparkling sea, it’s easy to see why Mai Khao Beach in Phuket has become such a unique and popular tourist destination. Visitors, both Thai and international, are drawn to the beach in droves.

Located in Thalang District within the Sirinat National Park, Mai Khao Beach is Phuket’s longest beach. It stretches from Nai Yang Beach past the airport all the way to Hat Sai Kaew, forming a continuous sandy coastline. While swimming is not popular here due to the deep and steep seabed, the beach remains a prime spot for relaxing, picnicking, sunbathing, or simply enjoying the scenery.

Mai Khao Beach also plays an important ecological role. It is home to a rich population of horseshoe crabs and serves as a nesting ground for sea turtles.

However, the beach’s viral fame comes from something truly extraordinary—its ability to let visitors photograph airplanes as they approach Phuket International Airport. From the far end of the beach, planes appear to emerge from the horizon over the ocean, gradually coming closer until they seem just meters above your head—a breathtaking sight for anyone with a camera.

Getting There

To reach the plane-viewing spot at Mai Khao Beach, drive via Wat Mai Khao to a parking area near the local shrine. From there, visitors can either take a leisurely 1.5 km walk along the beach or road or opt for a local tricycle ride, which takes less than five minutes at a cost of 20 THB per person. Tricycle services are generally available from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Tips for Visitors

-To maximize your chances, download the Flightradar app and track Phuket flights. Planes generally land on the beach side from December to May, while visitors in November should aim for morning arrivals.

-Apply sunscreen, as the Phuket sun is strong.

-The best time for photos is in the morning, between 7:00–9:00 a.m., when the air is cooler and planes land every 5–10 minutes. Clear skies will give you the ideal backdrop of blue skies with planes. Evenings are also popular for visitors.

-Drones are strictly prohibited. Avoid using flash or throwing objects near planes—violations carry severe penalties, including imprisonment.

Mai Khao Beach offers a rare combination of natural beauty, wildlife conservation, and exhilarating aviation photography, making it a must-visit destination for anyone traveling to Phuket.
