The Democrat Party will hold a special executive meeting on September 18 to finalize arrangements for electing a new party leader, with Abhisit Vejjajiva confirmed to return, aiming to restore public confidence and party morale.

BANGKOK, Thailand – The Democrat Party is moving to elect a new party leader following the resignation of Chalermchai Sri-on. Former Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva has accepted the invitation to return as party leader, a move that party members believe will boost morale and restore public trust.

On September 18, the party’s acting executive committee will meet to set the date, time, and venue for the extraordinary general meeting to elect the new leadership. Former MPs Sathit Wongnongtoey and Sirichok Sopha have expressed support for Abhisit, citing his long-standing commitment to the party’s principles and his readiness to guide the party through political and economic challenges.

The party expects the new leader to be in place by late October, providing sufficient time to prepare for upcoming general elections and the Bangkok gubernatorial race. Party officials emphasize that while restoring the party’s ideology and credibility will take time, Abhisit’s return is seen as a symbol of hope and dedication for members and supporters alike.
