BANGKOK, Thailand – The private sector has voiced support for the government’s “Khon La Khrueng” co-payment scheme, proposing an increase in the daily spending limit from 150 to 200 baht per person. Siripong Angkasakulkiat, Deputy Leader of the Bhumjaithai Party, acknowledged the proposal after discussions with the Restaurant Association of Thailand and major delivery platforms including Wongnai, Line Man, and Grab.
The meeting focused on improving the scheme based on past experiences, such as simplifying conditions, adjusting usage periods, and addressing daily spending limits. Siripong noted that the government, currently in a transitional period, has limited remaining funds and no plans to borrow additional money due to high public debt. Nevertheless, he emphasized that an expansion of the program is feasible.
The Deputy Party Leader also addressed tax concerns, assuring that no retroactive taxes will be levied on participating restaurants. Government platforms confirmed that existing registered users will not need to re-register, while new participants can join normally.
Restaurant operators welcomed the initiative, saying past economic difficulties had caused significant revenue drops—up to 60% in Bangkok and nearly 90% in provincial areas—forcing some businesses to close. They praised Bhumjaithai Party for acting quickly to revive the program, which they believe will provide relief and boost morale for small businesses nationwide.
Line Man Wongnai CEO Yod Chinsupakul said the system integration is expected to be smooth, as existing infrastructure and merchant databases will be used. An increase to 200 baht per day could stimulate consumer spending, enhance revenue for restaurants, and circulate money throughout the economy, though overall budget and program duration remain considerations.
The government plans to finalize the program shortly after the new Cabinet delivers its policy address. Platforms are preparing to support promotions and campaigns to maximize the initiative’s economic impact. (TNA)
