PATTAYA, Thailand – The Government is set to launch a “TouristDigiPay” sandbox project, aimed at allowing foreign tourists to convert digital assets into Thai baht for spending during their time in Thailand.
The project is a result of joint cooperation by the Ministry of Finance, the Securities and Exchange Commission, the Anti-Money Laundering Office, and the Ministry of Tourism and Sports.
The TouristDigiPay project is not meant to promote the use of digital assets as a direct payment method. Under this scheme, shops will receive the payment in baht as normal. Service providers must strictly comply with anti-money laundering measures and regulations. This initiative is expected to enhance the competitiveness of the Thai tourism industry and attract more foreign tourists. Moreover, it will strengthen Thailand’s financial structure in terms of innovation under a strict legal framework.
The project will be carried out on a trial basis for 18 months before an evaluation is conducted to decide whether it should continue to expand or not. It is expected to begin in the fourth quarter of 2025. (PRD)
