Deputy PM Phumtham stresses Thailand will defend sovereignty amid differing Cambodian statements, urging calm while continuing bilateral border negotiations.

BANGKOK, Thailand – Deputy Prime Minister and Acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wetchayachai said he is concerned that Cambodia has publicly stated positions that differ from prior agreements, even though the Royal Thai Army’s RBC (Regional Border Committee) meetings, particularly in the 2nd Army Area, are focused on border issues. He emphasized that Thailand will not allow any infringement on its sovereignty.

Phumtham noted that border matters are rarely resolved quickly, with some countries taking decades or even over a century to reach agreements. He urged calm and stressed the importance of standing firm on national interests. Jokingly, he raised his wristwatch and quipped: “What day is it today? I check every day—I’m about to leave office.”

Regarding the RBC meeting in the 2nd Army Area scheduled for Aug 27, Phumtham said the discussions will continue from previous meetings, with adjustments made according to local conditions. The primary focus remains on reaching mutual agreements on border lines.

He acknowledged concerns over Cambodia’s recent statements about barbed wire fences, noting that Thailand had not discussed this issue. Military diplomats in Phnom Penh have already protested. Despite differing public statements, Thailand continues to compile evidence and pursue its position through legal and diplomatic channels. Foreign Minister Maris Sangiampongsa has traveled to Geneva to present all evidence to committees related to the Ottawa Convention, reinforcing Thailand’s commitment to peace and sovereignty.

When asked about Cambodian protests calling on U.S. President Donald Trump to intervene in the border dispute, Phumtham said that is Cambodia’s right, and Thailand prefers to resolve issues through bilateral mechanisms. Reflecting on the one-month anniversary of the Thai-Cambodian border clashes, he emphasized that negotiations are ongoing, and Thailand remains committed to protecting national interests without provoking unnecessary conflict.
