BANGKOK, Thailand – The 2nd Army Region Operations Center issued a statement on July 28 confirming that a recent explosion near an abandoned building on the Cambodian side of the Thai–Cambodian border was tied to military activity involving Cambodian rocket and artillery systems placed within civilian areas.
Thai military officials reported that these indirect fire weapons have been repeatedly launched from non-military structures, including areas near homes and public facilities, targeting Thai civilian zones and causing casualties and property damage. The use of such tactics, using civilians as human shields, violates international humanitarian law.
The Royal Thai Army affirmed that any countermeasures taken are directed solely at verified military threats and never at civilian targets. All operations are considered acts of self-defense aimed at protecting lives and upholding national security.
Authorities also underscored that Thai military actions remain within the boundaries of international law and are carried out with restraint and precision. Civilian safety remains a guiding principle in all engagements.
While reiterating respect for neighboring sovereignty, the 2nd Army Region stated that continued hostile acts from across the border require firm defensive responses. Operations will remain limited, targeted, and legally justified. (NNT)
