PHETCHABURI, Thailand – Phetchaburi province, recognized by UNESCO as a Creative City of Gastronomy for its rich culinary traditions, recently held a walking tour to showcase its food heritage, cultural landmarks, and community-driven way of life. Organized under the theme “Creative City, Empowered Communities, Culinary Legacy,” the event promoted local tourism through guided, on-foot experiences that offered visitors an in-depth look at the city’s flavors and traditions.
Participants explored the historic old quarter, tasted regional dishes made with native ingredients, and observed the daily rhythms of riverside life along the Phetchaburi River. The tour also featured interactive workshops where visitors learned to make khanom tan (toddy palm cake) and practiced local handicrafts with community artisans, reinforcing the province’s culinary and cultural identity.
The event attracted a diverse group of attendees, including families, younger travelers, and culture seekers. Among the participants was Tatsushi Nishioka, Deputy Chief of Mission at the Embassy of Japan in Thailand and Permanent Representative to UNESCAP, whose involvement brought international visibility to the event and underscored the diplomatic value of cultural exchange.
Nishioka’s presence illustrated how cuisine and hospitality can connect people across borders. Visitors praised the welcoming atmosphere and appreciated the opportunity to experience Phetchaburi in a more intimate and authentic setting, away from the typical tourist routes.
As cultural and food-based tourism gains momentum, Phetchaburi continues to build global recognition by organizing events that share its traditions, promote community participation, and celebrate the unifying power of local cuisine. (NNT)
