
SEUOL – Liberal candidate Lee Jae Myung has been elected President of South Korea in a snap election triggered by the impeachment of former President Yoon Suk Yeol, who was removed from office after briefly declaring martial law.
The election saw a high voter turnout, with nearly 80% of South Korea’s 44.39 million eligible voters going to the polls, the highest participation rate in a presidential election since 1997.
According to the National Election Commission, Lee secured victory with 49.42% of the nearly 35 million votes cast. His conservative opponent, Kim Moon Soo, received 41.15%. (NNT)
