TAK, Thailand – Residents along the Thai-Myanmar border in Phop Phra District awoke to the continuous sounds of gunfire and explosions this morning as fierce clashes between Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA) and Myanmar military forces intensified.
The escalating conflict has led border schools to suspend classes until Friday, and a growing number of Myanmar citizens are seeking refuge in Thailand.
Sounds of gunfire and explosions are a constant for villagers in Ban Muen Ruechai, Phop Phra District, Tak Province. The village, just one kilometer from the border, is frequently caught in heavy shelling, forcing residents to take cover under their homes whenever fighting erupts.
Ban Morker School, with 276 students and 14 teachers, has canceled classes until Friday due to concerns over the proximity of the clashes. Despite the closure, teachers are still reporting to the school to monitor the situation and prepare for a potential return to classes.
Thai soldiers are providing 24-hour security around the school premises. Meanwhile, authorities report that 509 Myanmar nationals have already crossed into Thailand seeking safety. (TNA)
