BANGKOK, Thailand – Thailand is preparing to address the challenges of an aging society by promoting initiatives that enhance elderly well-being and prevent fall-related fractures. The government is supporting the “Walking Together” project to lower the risk of hip fractures, a major cause of disability and death among seniors.

According to Karom Polpornklang, Deputy Government Spokesperson, data shows that Thailand officially became a fully aged society in 2022, with over 12.1 million people aged 60 and above, 18.3% of the total population. Hip fractures, often resulting from falls, are projected to rise significantly, from 23,426 cases in 2006 to 56,443 by 2050.

To counter this, the Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, in collaboration with the Orthopaedic Association of Thailand, ThaiHealth, Krungthai Computer Services, and partner networks, launched the “Walking Together” project. This initiative uses digital technology to monitor senior health via the “Paotang” app and LINE @NHSO, with real-time data tracking to predict and prevent fall risks effectively.

Pilot programs in 11 provinces and 1 Bangkok district show promising results: a 10% drop in new and repeated falls and a reduced one-year post-surgery mortality rate to 15%. Around 70% of the elderly in trial areas accessed risk assessments and follow-up care. The government emphasized that technology will be vital in building a sustainable healthcare model to support the aging population. (NNT)
