Pattaya Sports Club Bowling League
200 Bowlers: Noodle and Aht.
Indiana gained one point on second place Green Tree after
winning two points in their match against Bavaria. Scores were not very good
in this competition but Stienar bowling as a pacer had a 531 series.
Kran Nielsen bowled a 536 series and Yeow Gale had a 522
to lead Caf้ Kronborg to a three point win over second place Green Tree.
Noodle Russell had a 224 game, 541 series and Aht Johansson bowled a 200
game and 544 series for Green Tree.
Ralph Oderbolz bowled a 537 series to lead Brother D to a
three point win over Canada and dropping Canada down from fifth to sixth
place. Tue Pettae bowled very well for Canada with games of 181, 195 and 199
for a 575 series.
VFW Post 9876 continued their winning ways taking all
four points from Tea Party behind Ooy Pluemkamon’s 536 series and Nok
Ostbo’s 500 series and they moved up the leader board from sixth to fourth
place. Tea Party dropped from fourth to fifth place.
No plain sailing on night trip
Pattaya Sports Club Fishing News
The big greys coveted by the
Pattaya fisher folk.
Capt. Dene
Six of us set sail from Khram Marine Fishing Lodge on
Saturday, 3rd March, on calm waters and commenced fishing some 90 minutes
later on arrival at one of our regular fishing spots.
Initially, it was a bit of a let-down after such a great
month in February with 5 very successful trips. In the morning the fish were
sleeping or not hungry and action was slow. Fortunately with a tide change
around lunch time the fish became more cooperative.
By the end of the day we had our usual bag catches of 6
to 10 kilos each. Our prized big grey cod also participated and we landed
several of these beauties around 1ฝ-2 kilos each.
We were all well satisfied with the day’s fishing by the
time we docked at 6:00 p.m. and even more so after our snacks and ales at
our usual restaurant. We were pleasantly surprised when Robert (Yai) joined
us after recently returning from Belgium. We wish him well in the
forthcoming week when he undergoes surgery.
A special night trip on Monday, 5th March was organized
by our regular member Jeff Doutch who, if my memory serves me correctly, has
participated in all but one of our trips during the last 2 years,
accompanied by his lovely wife Khammoon on half of those trips. It was his
wish (and one or two others) to have a night time excursion.
Alas, it is difficult to find much to put in this report
about the trip. The five intrepid anglers, which included 4 regulars and Ban
Chang Adrian, set out at 18:00 hours Monday evening, returning at 06:00
hours Tuesday morning with an overall catch of approx 10 fish, only 2 of
which are worthy of mention - 1 nice grouper around 2 kilos and 1 good sized
snapper.
I think the fact that no further night time trips are
planned for the future sums up what they all thought about the trip. Even
the captain was subdued and reluctant to talk about the trip when I spoke
with him later.
For our trip on 8th March the attendance was down and I
am loath to mention this was possibly due to the unsuccessful night trip 3
days prior. The word “fiasco” springs to mind when I refer to that trip.
Anyway, only 4 of us set out on perfect waters, a little
apprehensive about the weather forecast of summer storms. On arrival at our
grounds around 8:30 a.m., we immediately started hauling in our usual good
sized snapper, grouper, yellow tail and pladang and we were kept busy for
the next 2 hours.
We kept a weather eye open however, and we were not
surprised when heavy black clouds rolled in from the south west. The captain
headed off for the leeward side of one of the islands and we spent 20
minutes in light rain on the edge of the storm which by passed us on its way
to Bang Saray, Pattaya etc. The rest of the day was perfect, smooth waters,
light breeze intermittent sunshine & cloud and brisk fishing.
Champions for the day were Peter (2 big grey cod of 2
kilos each) and his wife Summai, with the most fish. Between them they
caught an estimated 17 plus kilos. They beat Jeff and me and won the bet (no
money involved). Nevertheless on weighing my clean and gutted fish at home,
I had 13 kilos but was disqualified as the skipper contributed to my catch.
Our next trip on Saturday, 17th March is full but there
are several vacancies for 22nd March.

Graeme extends his form in Thailand
PSC golf from The Outback Golf Bar
John Cogan (centre) with
Tuesday’s scramble winners Dennis (left) & Martin (right).
Monday, March 5, Khao
Kheow A & B – Stableford
Twenty-six Outbackers travelled to Khao Kheow for our
normal Monday outing. The course was well booked and all three nines were in
play. KK has unfortunately suffered some damage to greens on B and C nines
with a disgruntled staff member pouring diesel on five of their greens but
they are thankfully recovering quickly.
We played A and B, with all A’s greens flat and fast, the
greens on B were the same for except for the damage to B3 and B7. The course
has been well watered and the fairways and tees were lush and well tended.
Pace of play was good with a smooth transition from A to B.
(From left) Friday podium
placers Bob Dibben, Tony McDough and Sel Wegner.
Scores were generally poor, apart from the winners of
both divisions who shot 38 points. The winner of Division 2 (17+) was Paul
Crijns on 38 points off his 19 handicap, from Graeme Crofts with 36 points
off his 20 handicap, with Ken Holman on 35 points in third and fourth spot
going to Andy Makara on 33.
Division 1 saw Graeme Holmes continue his love affair
with Thailand golf with 38 points off his 9 handicap, from Laurie Rive with
34 points off his 16 handicap, ahead of Sel Wegner with 33 points on a count
back from Ranay Singh also with 33.
There was only one 2 for the day and that went to Sel
Wegner on Hole A3.

Tuesday, March 6, Pattaya
C.C. – Stableford
There have been many ‘fun’ golf days at Pattaya Country
Club from the Outback Bar during the last few years and today there was
another one – however this was tinged with a little sadness as it was the
swansong of John Cogan who leaves Pattaya next month to return home. In true
‘John’ fashion he generously sponsored the day, which was to be a ‘two
person’ scramble.
John hails from Cork in the ‘Emerald Isle’ where he spent
his working life in farming, and to where he is returning with his two young
children in order for them to be educated in Ireland. That some 68 played
today is a measure of his popularity and showed appreciation for the ever
smiling John, who has lived in Pattaya for 6 years.
The organizing today was in the hands of the two Tuesday
regulars, Chad and Nigel with help on the first tee from Neil Lavery.
So up to Pattaya Country Club and the first teams were
away before time on a fine day for golfing. Amongst the 68 were three
working caddies and two former caddies – with some success.
Back in the clubhouse, Chad was busy translating the
score cards to work out the leading groups – the top prize was donated by
John and there were a further 8 places plus ‘2’s!
Upon return to the Outback the place was buzzing. Among
those present were the 3 caddies who played and a few others – including
‘Mumma’ - John’s long time caddy who is the mother of Bob Pearce’s caddy.
Time for the presentation, opened by Capt. Bob who after
welcoming all informed us that this was to be his last day at the Outback
and asked they all continued to support the bar and General Jack, who is
taking it over 100%, after reaching an agreement to buy Bob’s half.
Regular Outback MC Nigel took over and said some words of
appreciation to John Cogan, then announced the results:-
In place were Bob Pearce and Chantel with 65.0, taking
second were Kevin Taylor and Lee Adderley 64.6, and the winners of John’s
top prize went to Dennis Pelly and Martin Kingswood with 61.4. Interesting
to note these two signed up individually and were paired up by the
organisers!
Finally Nigel handed John a book which had messages from
today’s players and other friends.
Thursday, March 8, Eastern
Star – Stableford
Forty Outbackers travelled to Eastern Star on an overcast
and relatively cool day. The course was well booked, but we hit off on time
and credit to Eastern Star staff, their marshalls were on the course and
talking to slow groups, so we all managed to complete the course in just
over four hours.
The course itself was well presented with lush fairways
and well grassed tees; but the greens were slow and the front nine have not
fully recovered, with many patchy areas but the back nine had plenty of
grass and overall the course continues to improve.
We had three divisions for the day and apart from three
players the course was the winner, especially as the breeze picked up as the
day wore on and it proved to be a tough day for most players - three shots
tougher than par according to the computer results.
A belated welcome to all the TIAC boys, 22 of them, up
here from Oz for their annual TIAC Cup which starts next Monday at Burapha,
followed by Khao Kheow on Tuesday. They didn’t all play with us today but a
good few of them did, including Lumpy Lee and Graham Holmes and welcome back
also to John & Lyn Foote.
Division C (22+) was won by Dave Collier with the best
score of the day, 38 points off his 25 handicap from Paul Squibb (29) with
36 points on a count back from Liz Collier (22), with fourth place going to
Murray Smith a long way back with 29.
Division B (16-21) was won by Tony Cooling (16) with 33
points from Fidge Button (16) on 32 points, with Ade Gurman (19) in third
with 31 points and Barry McIntosh (21) rounded out the placings with 30
points, beating Graeme Crofts on a count back.
Unbelievably, division A (0-15) was won by Daryl White
(15) with a mere 32 points from Tom Morris (15) with 31 points on a count
back from Dave Thomson (14), with fourth place going to Lloyd Shuttleworth
(6) with 30.
There were three ‘2’s from; Gavin Henderson, Shane Crane
and Paul Squibb.
Div A (0-15)
1st Daryl White (15/Hi14.9) 32pts
2nd Tom Morris (15/Hi15.1) 31pts
3rd Dave Thomson (14/Hi13.4) 31pts
Div B (16-21)
1st Tony Cooling (16/Hi16.1) 33pts
2nd Fidge Button (16/Hi15.9) 32pts
3rd Abe Gurman (19/Hi18.5) 31pts
Div C (22+)
1st Collier Dave (25/Hi24.4) 38pts
2nd Paul Squibb (29/Hi27.5) 36pts
3rd Liz Collier (22/Hi21.2) 36pts
Friday, March 9, Green
Valley – Stableford
A good turnout of 41 Outbackers here at Green Valley
today, and although we were 15 minutes late teeing-off everything after that
ran smoothly.
The course was in good condition and the greens were
average, perhaps a little too average for poor Sugar Ray as he had a
nightmare putting, not like the Sugarman that we know who always fancies
himself as a bit of putter, especially round this course.
Birdie man, Tony McDonough, birdied the fifth and sixth
holes but that wasn’t quite enough to give him the win, falling short by two
shots to his good mate, Sel Wegner, who took division B with 37pts.
Bob Dibben won Div A on count back from the consistent
Dennis Pelly, with a lower than usual score of 35pts, with Paul Bourke and
Jim Brackett right behind on 34.
The equal top score of the day came in Div C from Greg
LeBlanc, who is now on a bit of a run of form which has seen his handicap
come down to 24 (from 26) and all this before the big tournament down in Hua
Hin which starts Monday week (19th March) at Banyan.
The PSC’s Charity Classic is at Green Valley on the 16th
so we move across to St Andrews for the same price as Green Valley but carts
are compulsory and numbers are limited, so be quick to get your names down.
There were five ‘2’s from: Hole 4, Dennis Pelly; Hole 9,
Martin Crichton and three on Hole 16; Paul Bourke, Sel Wegner & Noel Taylor.
Div A (0-11)
1st Dibben Bob (7/Hi8.2) 35pts
2nd Dennis Pelly (10/Hi11) 35pts
3rd Paul Bourke (7/Hi8) 34pts

Gosden & Hammond victorious
PSC Golf from the Café Kronborg
Peter Blackburn
Monday, March 5, Crystal
Bay A & B – Stableford
There were a couple of late cancellations but we had a
waiting list which gave us a full field of 32 golfers to take on the popular
Crystal Bay golf course. We welcomed Kevin Callahan from Newcastle, NSW,
Australia and Art Sohlin from Detroit, Michigan, USA. Sadly we were saying
farewell to Carole & Richard Kubicki who were returning to the UK the
following day after their annual long holiday in Pattaya. Bon voyage to them
and we all look forward to seeing them again just before Xmas.
Peter Hammond, The Admiral,
Deefa the Dog & Mike Gosden.
After departing the Kronny a couple of minutes early at
0813hrs we headed off down Highway 3 and arrived at the course 46 minutes
later in beautiful weather conditions. We were allocated A & B nines and
invited to tee off as soon as we were ready which meant our first group got
away 27 minutes ahead of schedule at 0933hrs.
There was a Korean ladies four-ball in front of us who
were fairly quick on the first nine but as it got hotter they tended to “run
out of steam”, which resulted in a very slow back nine of two hours & thirty
five minutes. The course was up to its usual immaculate standards with the
slick greens once more posing problems for those left with long downhill
putts. As mentioned previously B nine was slow and we had a couple of
enforced drink breaks which saw us complete the whole round in four hours &
fifty minutes.
Scoring on the day was quite reasonable although nobody
managed to reach forty points which is unusual when we play this venue. The
winner of A Flight was Mike Gosden with 39 points, 1 point ahead of Leif
Kirkgaard in second place who in turn was 1 point clear of Dr Paul Cardwell
in third spot. Aussie Martin Todd was fourth with 36 points and on 34 points
in a four way count back for fifth place it was Richard Kubicki (20 point
back nine) who took the honours ahead of Takeshi Hakozaki (17 point back
nine), Mike Allidi (17 point back nine) and Ken Bernek (16 point back nine).
Graham Buckingham, The
Admiral, Deefa the Dog & Mike Gosden.
Peter Hammond took out the B Flight with 37 points and in
a two way count back on 36 points. Elias Magnusson (19 point back nine)
finished second with Tom Cotton (16 point back nine) in third spot. There
were four golfers on 34 points scrambling for fourth & fifth places and on a
count back Carole Kubicki (17 point back nine, 14 points on last 6 holes)
finished fourth with Bo Cardwell (17 point back nine, 11 points on last 6
holes) in fifth place. The unlucky ones were Jan Lovgreen (15 point back
nine) and Peter O’Brien (14 point back nine).
A Flight (0-20)
1st Mike Gosden (11) 39pts
2nd Leif Kirkgaard (20) 38pts
3rd Paul Cardwell (17) 37pts
4th Martin Todd (9) 36pts
5th Richard Kubicki (12) 34pts
B Flight (21+)
1st Peter Hammond (23) 37pts
2nd Elias Magnusson (21) 36pts
3rd Tom Cotton (24) 36pts
4th Carole Kubicki (24) 34pts
5th Bo Cardwell (29) 34pts
Near Pins: A5 – Walter Baechli; A8 – Bo Cardwell;
B4 – Carole Kubicki; B6 – Mike Allidi
Long Putts: A9 – Peter Hammond; B9 – Peter Hammond
The Compass Cap (awarded for worst score on the day) was
awarded to Beat Michel and Hunter paraded Deefa the Dog who once more
collected many donations to charity from the ever generous Kronny crew.
Thursday, 8th March –
Royal Lakeside – Stableford
Another full field of 32 golfers were signed up for the
competition at the popular Royal Lakeside Golf Club and we assembled at Caf้
Kronborg in readiness for a slightly later than usual departure. There were
hearty welcomes handed out to Ulf Larsson from Sweden and also Arne Max &
Liselotte from Denmark. It was also time to say bon voyage to Ulla & Kjeld
Ravn who are returning to Denmark after their long annual holiday in
Pattaya.
Due to a 1030hrs tee off time we departed the Kronny at
0828hrs and headed off down Highway 7 and just 58 minutes later arrived at
the course where as is often the case we were invited to tee off as soon as
we were ready, which enabled our first group to get away 35 minutes early at
0955hrs.
The weather was good although somewhat overcast as we
proceeded at a “cracking pace” and enjoying the excellent condition of the
course we completed our front nine in just under 2 hours. Unfortunately
after 11 holes we came to an abrupt stop as the threatening thunderstorm hit
and we sheltered under a nearby “resting hut” for about 25 minutes until the
worst part was over. We continued in drizzling rain and although the
fairways were soggy for a while the greens amazingly were perfect with very
little sign of what had just transpired.
It is a credit to the greenkeeping staff and the quality
of this golf course as a similar occurrence at many courses would have meant
the end of the competition for the day. Even allowing for a drinks break and
the 25 minute storm delay we completed our full round in four hours & twenty
five minutes.
This golf course was once again the winner as not one
golfer played better than handicap and of course the scoring on the second
nine was mostly very ordinary due to the adverse conditions. There was a
three way count back with 34 points to determine the first 3 spots in A
Flight with last start winner Mike Gosden (16 point back nine) emerging as
the victor from Ulf Larsson (14 point back nine) in second place and in
third spot was Brian Gabe (13 point back nine). Another 3 golfers contested
fourth & fifth places with 33 points and Martin Todd (18 point back nine)
edged out Tore Eliassen (17 point back nine) with Dr Paul Cardwell (16 point
back nine) just missing out.
Yet another count back was necessary to decide the winner
of B Flight with Graham Buckingham (21 point back nine) beating Mike
Winfield (16 point back nine), both with a creditable 36 points. In third
place was Leif Kirkgaard with 35 points, one point ahead of Bjarne Kjaer in
fourth spot and Eddie (The Eagle) Glinsek finished fifth with 33 points.
A Flight (0-19)
1st Mike Gosden (11) 34pts
2nd Ulf Larsson (16) 34pts
3rd Brian Gabe (19) 34pts
4th Martin Todd (9) 33pts
5th Tore Eliassen (14) 33pts
B Flight (20+)
1st Graham Buckingham (22) 36pts
2nd Mike Winfield (22) 36pts
3rd Leif Kirkgaard (20) 35pts
4th Bjarne Kjaer (20) 34pts
5th Eddie Glinsek (34) 33pts
Near Pins: 3rd – Mike Gosden; 6th – Peter Hammond;
12th – Mike Gosden; 15th – Martin Todd
Long Putts: 9th – Ulf Larsson; 18th – Mike Gosden
The Compass Cap (worst score on the day) was awarded to
the luckless Art Sohlin and Hunter paraded Deefa the Dog who collected many
donations to charity from the ever generous Kronny crew.

Captain Bob and Peter do it again
IPGC golf from The Haven
Wednesday, March 7, Rayong
C.C. - Stableford
CSS 72
Division 1 (0-16)
1st Bob Heath (13) 39pts
2nd Jim Slattery (11) 36pts
3rd Mike Flynn (13) 35pts
4th Gerald Decio (15) 35pts
Division 2 (17+)
1st Alwyne Burley (17) 35pts
2nd Leif Lossius (30) 35pts
3rd Don Everett (20) 35pts
4th Shuichi Kodaka (18) 35pts
Following a very successful IPGC Monthly Medal
competition on Monday it was back to the usual stableford game being held at
Rayong Country Club on the occasion of the Bank Holiday being held for
Macchabucha Day, the Buddhist Lent, with prices of green fees at most of the
other courses in the area almost doubled, this day’s total cost was just
1,100 baht.
Alwyne Burley.
Once again two divisions cut at sixteen and below found
the general condition of the course to be good with scoring to match,
although only one player bettered their handicap while just one other
equaled it, both of them in the first division.
In the first division the top scorer turned out to be the
very much in-form Captain Bob Heath, who found himself once again on the top
step with fellow clubman Jim Slattery trailing by three in second place, a
position that Bob has now become familiar with over the last few weeks, and
with Jim having been struggling with the techniques of the game during the
same period, it was a welcome relief to him to get back amongst the proper
golfers at last, albeit on the second step. Meanwhile Bob’s handicap will at
last be adjusted to something like a real one after his home club
handicapper’s 70th birthday exemption finally expired.
Rounding out a nap hand of South Herts members, the third
place went to Mike Flynn after he won a count back over Gerald Decio, with a
better 20 to 17 over the inward half.
Bob Heath.
The second division was an extremely tight affair with
all the top four returning one over cards for thirty five points, the top
spot being taken by Alwyne Burley whose 8 points over the last three holes,
determined that Leif Lossius took second as his six points was unusually not
enough, after they had both tied the back nine at 17 each and the six at 13
apiece.
Don Everett slipped into third after dropping out after
the back six were counted with just 9 but ahead of Shuichi Kodaka who also
had 17 on the nine but just 8 through the last six holes.
There were no 2’s in either division which underlined the
level of difficulty to which the course was playing on the day.
Before presenting the prizes for the day Stephen Beard
welcomed back Maurizio Guidi, Pat Prenderville, Erik Donnestad, Alan Venner,
Michael Steele, Michael Flynn, and Michael Cutmore the last four being the
second wave from South Herts Golf Club, and which leaves no “Michaels” back
at Links Drive.
Friday, March 9, Treasure
Hill (Yellow tees) - Stableford
CSS 72
Division 1 (0-10)
1st Peter Skinner (10) 39pts
2nd Erik Donnestad (4) 36pts
3rd Michael Cutmore (0) 34pts
4th Alan Pilkington (9) 33pts
Division 2 (11-17)
1st Tony Barritt (15) 34pts
2nd Alan Hanlon (12) 33pts
3rd Bob Akapita (17) 32pts
4th Alwyne Burley (17) 31pts
Division 3 (18+)
1st David Bowles (20) 37pts
2nd Frank Dunstan (22) 36pts
3rd Torild Lossius (33) 35pts
4th Shuichi Kodaka (18) 34pts
An even larger turnout meant the formation of three
divisions, with the cut coming in the first division at 10 and below.
David Bowles.
Yet another previous winner and South Herts member took
the top honour with a three under handicap round that owed much to the
pinpoint accuracy of his approach shots and it was a great surprise to his
playing partners that he could not convert more of them into the birdies
that they so richly deserved, although it did save them some considerable
expense at the end of the day. Peter did put the hammer down over the back
nine after a slowish start, which had encouraged his playing partners
immensely, as he then went level par gross over the next eight holes before
tripping up over an anchor with a bogey on the last.
Second place went to Norwegian teaching professional,
Erik Donnestad who has traded two weeks of snow and ice and a few lessons
for several rounds of golf, no lessons and a bar tan. Erik’s gross 76 was
bettered by one of the teaching professionals from South Herts, Michael
Cutmore, who had also decided that two weeks in Pattaya was just preferable
to two weeks in North London and watching Arsenal play Spurs. Michael
finally managed to get a few of those little ones to drop as he returned a
gross 74 for third place. This was indeed a fine effort that included a one
under gross for the last thirteen holes after he had started a little
blearily. Alan Pilkington just did enough to claim fourth another point
further back.
Peter Skinner.
The second division was taken by Tony Barritt at two over
handicap, a mirror image of one of last week’s results, as he just kept Alan
Hanlon at bay by a single shot, with Bob Akapita anther shot behind in third
and a strangely out of sorts Alwyne Burley back in fourth also a shot behind
third.
The third division was also keenly contested with David
Bowles just getting the edge over the closing holes after he had started out
over a front nine that included three blobs, he started the back with 18
points from the first six holes, added yet another blob and closed the nine
at four under handicap to win his first competition on this visit.
Frank Dunstan was going well through nine but lost his
chance to win on the 15th with an errant tee shot from
which he failed to score and from then second place was the best that could
be achieved.
Torild Lossius kept the family name in the frame with a
one over round that took third and left the still recovering Shuichi Kodaka
to round out the day’s podium in fourth place.
With so many players it was inevitable that the roll over
pools for the 2’s would be won, which they were, with Michael Cutmore, Jason
Cole, Alan Pilkington and Erik Donnestad with two sharing the first division
and David Bowles and Maurizio Guidi sharing the second division.
Prior to the presentations there was a welcome for new
member Bob Akapita and welcome backs for Shane Heavey and John Teague.
Note: If you would like to play with The Haven group, you
can contact mobile 082 219 0965 or call in to The Haven Hotel, at 185 Soi

Makha Bucha ... and all that
IPGC Pattaya Golf Society at Rabbi’s Elephant Bar
Wednesday, 7th March was Macha Bucha Day and for us it
was a trip to Century Chonburi where we encountered horribly slow greens,
horribly slow Thai six-balls, six hours rounds and no beer! Happy holiday!
The winner today was Masanori Takano on 36 points ahead
of Robbie Taylor (35 points) and Peter Ditz, Ken Grimes, Bryan Barrell (all
with 32 points).
PJ Mitchell collected the ‘2’s pot with a birdie on the
17th
Quality restored
The Pattaya Golf Society visited Green Valley on Friday,
9th March, to play a stableford event on the course for the first time in
many months. The absence had been caused by some strict and quirky
conditions laid down by the management during the low season but now was the
chance to return.
The course was in excellent condition, probably one of
the best courses played this year so far, with well grassed fairways and
clean and well paced greens. The field was divided into two flights at
thirteen and under and play got underway before time.
In the second flight Richard Dobson, Pat Murphy and Kevin
McBride all shared third place with 33 points, just one behind Ken Page on
34 points. The flight winner was Mr Len with 38 points.
In the top flight Joe Niisato was a comfortable third
with 36 points and Dave Moriarty took runner-up place with 37 points. The
best score of the day was recorded by Richard “Banjo” Bannister, his gross
79 giving him 41 stableford points for an emphatic win after a long time in
the doldrums this trip.
The ‘2’s pot was shared by Stuart Thompson,Banjo, Masa
Takano, Rick Schramm and Ken Page.
Wichai Tananusorn took a very rare Booby Bevy award as he
recorded the largest split of seven points between the two nines. It had
been a joy to return to Green Valley and it is to be hoped that wise heads
will prevail when it comes to the low season in a month or two’s time.

Thierry crowned Lewiinski’s Open Champion
PSC golf from Lewiinski’s Golf Society
Sunday, March 4, Green
Valley– The Open Day 4
1st David Palmer (13) net 70
2nd Dale Hoek (9) net 74
Plate (Day 2)
A Flight
1st Gary Blackburne (7) 39pts
2nd Rannay Singh (12) 36pts
3rd Chris Davisson (10) 36pts
B Flight
1st Mikko Mutanen (18) 40pts
2nd Loe Carrol (18) 38pts
3rd Sayer Gill (18) 37pts
Near Pins: No 4 Bob Newell; No 9 & No 12 Colm Mullen;
No 16 Alex Ferraz
The leaders from the previous week went out in reverse
order of the field, with the contenders, therefore off last. It was Thierre
Petrement, Paul Crijns and Dale Hoek in the final group and then ‘Broad
more’ Bob, Colm Mullen and Jim ‘No’ Bell.
Lewiinskis champ Thierry
Petrement.
Thierry started out with a double bogie and another
double and completed a gross 44 for the front nine. Meanwhile Dale started
bogie-double bogie-birdie and did not give away another shot thereafter for
a gross 40. Paul’s nightmare treble bogie-double bogie, and another treble
on the eighth for a gross 51 ended his chances. He came back strongly but he
had left himself too much to do and ended with a gross 44. Dale’s three
double bogies on the inward nine gave him a gross 43. Thierre managed to
steady the ship a bit as he carded a gross 41.
And so it was Thierre Petrement who had his name etched
on the perpetual trophy, with defending champion Dale Hoek taking the
runners up spot.
In the Plate, Sayer Gill coupled a 37pt first day outing
with his 34 points for a total over the two days of 71 points. The red hot
fist day winner Colin ‘the donkey’, with 68 points, took second place as Lou
Zigzag filled the podium a stroke short.
A special mention goes to Jim Bell who won the “No Bell
Prize for Economics.”
Special thanks to the lads from Down Under in WA’s
Peninsular Golf and Social Club, to Lou and Colin for their tournament work,
to all the Lewiinski’s staff for the unbelievable buffet, and above all to
those who participated.
Tuesday, March 6, Greenwood - Stableford
A Flight
1st Tony Gliddon (13) 39pts
2nd Dave Palmer (5) 35pts
B Flight
1st Mike Jeffreys (18) 37pts
2nd Mikko Mutanen (18) 36pts
A modest and to be honest a disappointing number turned
out to play the monthly Golf Club and Lewiinski’s two day stableford at
Greenwood. Aussie Tony Gliddon led the senior flight with a best on the day
39 points. Tony was four strokes clear of Dave Palmer.
B Flight honours went to the Welsh Wizard Mike Jeffreys
on 37 points while Mikko Mutanen edged Gavin Wright for the sliver and last
podium place.
Shi Chudbamia slotted home the only ‘2’ of the day.
Friday, March 9, Greenwood - Stableford
A Flight
1st David Shelton (8) 37pts
2nd Peter Hynard (12) 36pts
3rd Greg Bates (13 36pts
B Flight
1st Warren Holland (20) 31pts
2nd Geoff Kubas (21) 31pts
3rd Peter Henshaw (15) 30pts
B Flight found the Greenwood course extremely hard to
master as Warren Holland and the out of tune Geoff ‘Elvis’ Kubas managed
just 31 points apiece. Warren’s points total had a better inward nine
dispersal than Geoff’s. To say that Peter Henshaw was gob-smacked to collect
the bronze on 30 points would be an understatement.
The premier flight showed why it is called that today as
it provided the only player to better par and three others that played to
it. David Shelton’s 37 points proved to be the day’s top score while Peter
‘the right honorable’ Hynard, Greg Bates and Tony Gliddon were all logged
jammed with even par rounds - Peter emerging from the heap to grab the
silver as Greg Bates took the bronze.
Tony was not left out in the cold however as his 36
points added to his first day 39 gave him the lead crystal two day winner’s
trophy.
Peter Hynard and Ken Aihara split the 2’s pot.
Note: Lewiinski’s is situated on Pattaya Land Soi 1, Beach Road Soi
13/3 near to Walking Street. Anyone wishing to play with us, just pop in and
add your name to the list or call Colin on 089 826 0764. Transport is
provided.

Dannie L produces
his best golf of the year
The Backyard Golf Society
Esteemed members of the Backyard Golf
Society pose for a photo outside Kisses Bar.
Another good turnout this week for the
Backyard Golf Society’s Friday round at Emerald Golf Course. We welcomed
back Gavin after an absence of a few months and started with 8 players,
of which 7 were in all competitions.Dannie L won the
stableford competition after playing his best golf for a long while and
ending up with 36 points. Terry C came in second with 33 and Mike won
the nearest the pin prize. Dan was the big winner in the skins with (8),
and other winners are as follows: Mike (5), Andy Oz (2), Terry C (2) and
JJ (1).
After a blistering hot day on the golf course it was
nice to wonder down the road afterwards for a few cold ones and wishing
Dannie L all the best because he’s off to work next week.
Hughes turns up the heat
PSC Bunker Boys @ The Bowling Green
Monday, March 5,
Bangpakong – Stableford
We had a good turnout of 22 golfers today for one of our
rare visits to the always enjoyable Bangpakong course. Every time we play
this course someone seems to turn in a remarkable score and there was no
question who was the star today, as Geoff Cox followed up a modest front
nine (16 points), with a stunning back nine, carding 4 birdies, for 27
points and a gross back nine score of 35 to run away with the A flight.
John Hughes.
Newcomer Frank Sharkey took the honours in the B flight,
ahead of Reg Smart, who was making a return after a couple of week’s absence
due to illness – welcome back Reg, and we’re now waiting for your mate Peter
to recover as well.
It was also Mike Corner’s last game before returning to
the “chippy” in the U.K., so a special thanks to him for all the help he’s
provided over the past few months.
A Flight
1st Geoff Cox (15) 43pts
2nd Colin Greig (9) 39pts
3rd Tony Robbins (13) 38pts
B Flight
1st Frank Sharkey (22) 40pts
2nd Reg Smart (26) 38pts
3rd John Hughes (17) 38pts
Near Pins: Alan Freeman, Mashi Kaneta and Tony
Robbins
Wednesday, March 7,
Plutuluang W & N – Stableford
We always try to play one of the cheaper courses on
public holidays, so today we paid a return visit to the Navy course. Only 10
die-hard golfers turned up, the remainder preferring to avoid the
anticipated chaos of an overcrowded course, delays and associated problems.
In the event, we weren’t surprised to find that there was a shortage of
caddies, and a delayed tee off, but the hard-core golfers eventually had a
good although slow day.
The course was in surprisingly good shape with the greens
looking good, but as usual very slow. Ex-champion John Hughes backed up his
claim that he’ll win this month’s Golfer of the Month title by winning on
the day, ahead of arch rival Colin Greig. Gez Williams had a great day on
the par 3’s taking three prizes, and also taking 3rd
place in the competition, beating Gordon Melia on a count back.
1st John Hughes (17) 35pts
2nd Colin Greig (9) 34pts
3rd Gez Williams (19) 33pts
4th Gordon Melia (17) 33pts
Near Pins: Gez Williams (3) and Ken F.
Friday, March 9,The
Emerald – Stableford
Back to the regular number of 22 golfers today for our
visit to the always popular Emerald course. The day started off very warm,
with some of the less acclimatized members struggling on the front nine, but
the breeze picked up on the back nine to everyone’s relief.
It’s still early days, but John Hughes continued his push
for the Golfer of the Month title, beating newcomer Roger Mitchell on a
count back after both scored 37 points. John’s now only 3 points behind last
month’s winner Colin Greig, but with Colin facing an impending cut in his
handicap, it could be a tight contest.
A Flight
1st Alan Freeman (3) 36pts
2nd Colin Greig (9) 33pts
3rd Paul Smith (3) 33pts
B Flight
1st John Hughes (17) 37pts
2nd Roger Mitchell (20) 37pts
3rd Steve K (20) 36pts
Near Pins: Alan Freeman, Lee Butler, Mashi Kaneta
and Tore Eliason.
Note: The Bunker Boys are a PSC affiliated golf
society who now play out of the Bowling Green on Soi X-Zyte between Pattaya
3rd Road and Soi Buakhaow. We play three times per
week on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, so if you enjoy a fun day out and
a friendly but competitive golf competition why not come and join us. We
meet at the Bowling Green at 9 a.m. and new players with valid handicaps are
always welcome. For more information call Dave on 087 146 9978, email

Aussies make better golfers than cricketers
IPGC golf from The Links
Martin
Grimoldby.
Sunday, March 4, Green
Valley – Stableford
Today we were back home to our preferred Sunday
destination, albeit a month earlier than originally intended. With places
limited to 24, demand exceeded supply and a number of golfers unfortunately
applied too late to get a slot – get your names down early for the next
month or so to avoid disappointment!
With the course extremely busy, the first tee off was
delayed by 45 minutes, giving everyone ample time for lunch/practice (and
one golfer to get over from Pattaya Country Club, where he’d been waiting
patiently for the rest to arrive). Once we got started, however, the pace of
play was generally good. With one late cancellation due to illness, 23
golfers meant the usual two flights, with the cut coming at 0-18 and 19+.
In the A flight, Green Valley specialist Joe McArdle took
third place, losing out to holidaying Aussie Neville Duncan on 19 to 17
count back after both carded 33 points. The winner was the genial Irishman
Charlie Lapsey, who played steady golf in difficult conditions to card 35
points, the only player to score anywhere near handicap.
The B flight was an all Aussie affair, indeed all 3
winners are currently visiting from the same club, Wakehurst, in Sydney.
Frank Dunstan and Peter McKenzie could only be split by 17–16 count back
after both scored 32 points, with Russell Gilroy triumphant on 33.
The ‘2’s went to Neville Duncan (2), Peter Skinner, Joe
Peters & Russell Gilroy.
A Flight
1st Charlie Lapsey (9) 35pts
2nd Neville Duncan (11) 33pts
3rd Joe McArdle (12) 33pts
B Flight
1st Russell Gilroy (19) 33pts
2nd Peter McKenzie (24) 32pts
3rd Frank Dunstan (23) 32pts
Tuesday, March 6, Royal
Lakeside - Stableford
Eighteen players made the trip to Royal Lakeside for our
first time since the greens have been re-laid, and found the course to be in
generally good condition, (for some that meant when they finally found the
course, after taking an unguided tour of Bangpakong province).
Rob Taylor & Mike Korney.
We arrived to an almost deserted car park and were able
to tee off immediately on arrival, but with a strong wind blowing all day
and the new greens difficult to hold and with some tough pin positions,
scoring was generally difficult.
Eighteen players meant only one division with four
places, and only an excellent round by Martin Gimoldby prevented another
Aussie clean sweep. Three players tied on 32 points, with Glenn Eldershaw
taking fourth place, ahead of Russell Exley and Jun Ishikara, his 17 point
back 9 proving one better than his counterparts. Russell Gilroy and Neville
Duncan were again in the places, with 33 and 34 points respectively, but
Martin Grimonldbys excellent 37 points meant the day belonged to him. Better
news followed as he also registered the only ‘2’ of the day.
Back at The Links, the presentation was briefly
interrupted, and the Aussies day soured somewhat, as we all watched their
cricket team soundly thrashed by Sri Lanka in the one day match.
1st Martin Grimoldby (6) 37pts
2nd Neville Duncan (11) 34pts
3rd Russell Gilroy (19) 33pts
4th Glenn Eldershaw (20) 32pts
Thursday, March 8, Pattana
– Stableford
A strong field of 26 players meant we were back to two
flights, with an unusually low cut coming at 0-11 and 12+. We played the B&C
courses, and with 17 of the 26 players falling in Congu handicap categories
1 and 2, the decision to play off the white tees was more than justified.
We managed to tee off about 20 minutes early, but
torrential rain after 3 holes meant we had to take shelter for 45 minutes
until the greens were playable again. The course on the whole withstood the
downpour well, although we had to revert to ‘clean and place’ on the
fairways, and the greens understandably slowed during the day as the sun
came out and encouraged the blades to rise.
Scoring was generally good in the A Flight, with Jun
Ishikara taking third place with 35 points. 8 handicappers Rob Taylor and
Phil Groves both carded the regulation 36 points, Rob taking first place by
virtue of a 19 to 17 count back.
Scoring was understandably harder in the B Flight, with
Mark Stanley, unusually relegated to the flight despite having a12 handicap,
coming third with 30 points. Frank Dunstan was yet again in the money,
coming second with 32 points. A deserved victory, however, went to Mike
“Papa” Korney, for the first time in his illustrious Links career, showing
perseverance will sometimes pay off. Victory was all the more sweet for
Mike, who after deciding to start taking his putter to bed with him at
night, registered no 3 putts for the first time in 200 years, on his way to
33 points.
The ‘2’s pot was shared by Seil Revels & Martin
Grimoldby.
A Flight
1st Rob Taylor (8) 36pts
2nd Phil Groves (8) 36pts
3rd Jun Ishikara (11) 35pts
B Flight
1st Mike Korney (19) 32pts
2nd Frank Dunstan (23) 31pts
3rd Mark Stanley (12) 30pts
Note: The Links depart from the hotel on Soi
Buakhao at 9.30am on Tuesdays and Thursdays and for Rayong Green Valley
every Sunday. Sign up at the hotel or contact Jon on 080 021 1034. A full

Peter Booth claims victory in the valley
PSC golf from The Golf Club
John Emmerson, Peter Booth &
Tay.
Steve Ellison
Monday, March 5, Green Valley (White tees)
– Stableford,.
1st Peter Booth (12) 41pts
2nd Brad Gearie (13) 38pts
3rd John Emmerson (12) 38pts
4th Brett Chan (16) 36pts
5th Henry O’Brien (20) 35pts
Loads of golf this week so let’s get right to it!
Visiting Australian Peter Booth showed the locals how it is done as he
walked away with his first TGC victory on Monday. These Aussies are a good
bunch of golfers and generally seem to have had to earn their handicaps on
tougher courses than we play. Well played to Peter, and also to the familiar
face of Brad Gearie who once again is right up there.
I must also mention John Emmerson’s third placing or he
will never let me hear the end of it. Brett and Henry also played well
enough to sneak in with 4th and 5th
places.
Tuesday, March 6, Greenwood (White tees) – Stableford
1st Gavin Wright (13) 36pts
2nd Johannes Murlen (8) 34pts
3rd Peter Hynard (12) 33pts
4th Ken Aihara (8) 31pts
This was the first day of our monthly 2-day comp with our
pals at Lewiinski’s, which is now on our third month of heated competition.
Unfortunately, we had a rather small turnout for this day as our Siam
members had already scheduled their tee times for their regular Tuesday
outing. We had chosen to play a Tuesday/Friday comp this month as Wednesday
was a big Buddha day (Macha Bucha Day) so therefore holiday rates prevailed.
Yet another Aussie, Gavin Wright , took top spot by
shooting his handicap on the day. Gavin is wheels up by now and winging his
way home for a few weeks, so see ya soon mate!
Thursday, March 8, Khao Kheow (White tees) – Stableford,.
1st Ken Aihara (6) 38pts
2nd Haro Kato (8) 38pts
3rd Brad Gearie (13) 37pts
4th Peter Larsson (13) 37pts
We have had 12 nationalities play with us this week, but
today it was our Japanese buddies who ruled the podium. Ken Aihara is a very
consistent golfer who makes few mistakes. He is down to a 6 now and is
usually in the frame on our outings. This week, he outdid himself and
claimed a first with his 38 Stableford point effort at Khao Kheow.
Countryman Haro Kato was just beaten on count back by
Ken’s backside 19, whilst Brad Gearie was in there again (remember his 61
last week to nab the Monthly Medal?) with another great round. In fact, it
was a double count back with Peter Larsson bringing up the rear with another
37 pointer. These guys are good!
Friday, March 9, Mountain Shadow – Stableford,
White tees.
1st Dave Shelton (8) 37pts
2nd Peter Hynard (12) 36pts
3rd Ken Aihara (6) 34pts
4th Warren Holland (21) 31pts
And so on to the second day of our 2-day comp with the
Lewiinski’s crew. As luck would have it, The Golf Club done good once again
to claim victory for the 3rd straight month with an
average Stableford score of 27.3 to Lewiinski’s 25.0. It was closer than it
sounds which is what makes this competition such great fun.
We had two first place finishes and also claimed the ‘2’s
with Peter Hynard and Ken Aihara tapping in putts for their deuces. There
were 35 golfers out for this event and we all headed back for some fine food
at Lewiinski’s afterward for the presentation of the crystal goblet.
As a reminder, we have a road trip scheduled for Soi Dao
on the 20th-21st of March and
our Songkran trip this year is 13-20 April and up in the Khao Yai region at
Pak Chong for some terrific new courses, including Mountain Creek by Seve
Ballesteros, so drop by for details and signups.
Note: The Golf Club is located on Soi LK Metro. We play on Monday,
Wednesday and Friday so come join us for a fun day out. Just call 085 434

Czernie churns it up
Phoenix Tuesday/Friday Golf Group
Tuesday’s winners pose with the staff at the
Relax Bar.
Mike Gerrard
Friday, March 2, Phoenix -
Stableford
It was a fine day on the Lake/Ocean course today and with
a large part of the tourists gone the speed of play became a little more
tolerable.
John Bartley and Denis Dixon shared the honours on the
course, both with 35 points, while Eamon Murtagh claimed third place with 34
points. Scoring high points is becoming rare at present with fast greens and
tricky flagstick placements making putting very difficult.
Back at the Relax Bar we enjoyed our first drink free and
duly awarded the prizes, plus the lucky draw prizes donated by the Relax
Bar.
The near pin prizes went to Mike Gerrard, Eamon Murtagh,
Ted Oreton & Denis Dixon.
Tuesday, March 6, Phoenix
– Stableford
Mountain & Lake course was our challenge today; it has
been some time since we played this combination and most players consider it
the hardest of the Phoenix courses.
The fairways and the greens are now very hard and dry due
to a prolonged spell of fine weather, which makes the greens very tricky
indeed. However with the fairways harder there is more run on the drives (if
you hit it straight that is), which in turn leaves one with a shorter shot
into the greens (in some cases the second shot, and in others the third or
fourth?)
Our winner today was the lovable David Czernie. David not
only won the first prize but also the coveted KPK Food Services voucher for
the best score of the day. David scored a fine 39 points to be the only
player to beat handicap the whole of the week. In second place was Sergio
Poggi with 33 points, third place went to Denis Dixon with 32 points and
joint fourth went to Stuart Gordon & Bob Neylon.
Hugh Byrne and Eamon Murtagh would have figured in the
places but sadly did not make it back to the presentation.
Near pins went to Bong Thonsaphon (3) and the other was
not claimed so the prize went into the lucky draw. This meant four lucky
draw prizes, sponsored by our hosts the Relax Bar and they went to Ad
Adriaans, Mike Gerarrd, Bill Hewitt & Peter Harris.
We said a fond farewell to Peter Harris who is going off
to the U.K. to try and get his knee repaired. Can’t cap that!
It will soon be getting into low season and the
management of Phoenix will be publishing their intended green fee rates for
the duration. I will inform everyone as soon as I know what they are going
to be; usually Tuesday’s fall into the Sports Day rates.
Also if anyone is interested in sea fishing (strictly
fishing) give me a call on 087 091 7565.
And finally, someone said to me a couple of weeks ago, “People are
reading your reports and laughing at you.” I replied, “I have been trying to
achieve that for the last forty years on stage. Thank God, at last!”

A historic week for
Travellers Rest golfers
Travellers Rest Golf Group
Tim Dalton
Firstly I am delighted to report some good progress for
our friend & colleague Barry Hooper, who after a terrible road accident
which led to months of being unable to move or communicate is now getting
around in a wheelchair and is able to talk. Let’s hope this progress
continues and leads to a full recovery
Seamus Farrel shot a record
46 points last week at Emerald.
This past week saw the Travellers Rest Golf Group take
residence at their new home of The Bowling Green, and thanks to some
logistical masterminding by Fergus the move went without a single hitch or a
single complaint of missing clubs or equipment. All lockers were emptied,
bagged and tagged and rehoused at the Bowling Green in less than 2 days.
We have also introduced a few new features to the way
that we play our golf, the most important of which is the new “Over 65, Over
19” rule. In simple terms any player over the age of 65 with a handicap of
19 or more can, if they so wish, play off the “Yellow” or non comp tees.
As Fergus explained, this now brings in competitive play
players who previously were there just to make up the numbers, in 2 ways.
Firstly the obvious yardage advantage, but more importantly the belief that
they can compete with the rest of the field. Having played a few times with
some of our more “mature” players I think this brings a great new aspect to
the whole spirit in which the game should be played.
A full list of results can be found on our website, but a
special mention must go to my good pal Seamus Farrell, who welcomed the
above rule changes with open arms and shot a club record 46 points, with 2
scratches at Emerald last week. This was a huge score off any tee and we
were all delighted to see his handicap slashed by several strokes.
Normal reporting will resume next week with a full
results service.
You can find the Travellers Rest Golf Group at our new
home, The Bowling Green on Soi Fuengfa alongside the old Xzyite Discotheque.
For more information visit website www.trgg.biz or call 038 422 525.

Hart top scores
at Terry’s Birthday Bash
PSC Golf from Mulligans Lakeside
“Don’t squeeze me too hard,
I’m delicate.” - Mam & Bob.
Tuesday, March 6, Treasure
Hill - Stableford
Tuesday we travelled to Treasure Hill where I must say
usually I am a big rap for this course and management, but today they let
not only us, but themselves down. Last year when they were working on
greens, they provided clear advice of this and a suitable discount, so
everybody was aware and appreciated their honesty. Tuesday, not so much, no
advice, no discount and some greens were unplayable due to sand and mounds
of corings etc. Might miss a month or so at TH, which is a pity, but there
are always other places to go!
Bob Edwards (9) came to terms with the conditions best,
recording 33 points for the win, followed in by Mam (26) with 32.
Near pins went one each to Monte and Bob, with Jonathan
grabbing a brace.
Thursday, March 8,
Wangjuntr – Stableford
Thursday was a visit to Wangjuntr, to play the Valley
course and the consensus was to play the Blues (Gold is the tips), as White
was too short to get an appreciation of the course. We decided on no comp
today, just concentrate on what is advertised as the highest rated
officially (71.8/124 from Blue) course in Thailand.
The course generally was good, although the greens did
not quite measure up to the expected standard of the rest of the course. All
agreed that the trip was worthwhile, so we may well go back again in the not
so distant future.
Friday, March 9, Pattaya
C.C. - Stableford
Big day Friday with Terry Phur’s 75th Birthday Golf Day
and over 50 players turned out at Pattaya Country Club. With the scheduled
tee-off of 12 noon golfers were soon under way, battling it out for the
array of prizes offered.
Ladies winners were separated after count back, with Nu
Watson (36) edging Kath Doody (17) 18/15, after both signed for 34 points.
The men’s winner, posting the best score of the day, was Ian Hart (17) with
38 points, ahead of Geoff Doody (22) who signed for 37. Third & Fourth
required a count back; Clive Hoseason (29) getting the nod over Dave Edwards
(18) 21/18, both having recorded 36 points.
Near pins on the par 3s were won by Gerry, Clayton, Ian &
Kathy, while Jim got the second shot approach on the 6th hole. Not
forgetting the longest 1st putt, going to Mam with 9ft4in.
After golf it was back to Mulligans Lakeside for the
usual superb buffet & cold beverages provided by Ray, Kheow & staff, before
partying into the night. A great day & night was had by all, Many Happy
Returns to Terry, hip hip hooray!
Note: Mulligans Lakeside plays golf generally on
Tuesday & Thursday, with ML hosting prompt presentations on both days. Call
0890941841 for scheduling or enquiries. Hope to see you there, cheers & good
golfing!

Gabe hits form at Navy
PSC golf from Tropical Bert’s
Tuesday’s winner and runner up
with one of Bert’s finest.
Derek Brook
Tuesday, March 6, Khao
Kheow – Stableford
Off we went to Khao Kheow on a morning when at the last
moment some players did not make it, usually due to illness. What is it
about this time of the year that seems to lay so many people low? Still, we
had a reasonable turnout, so it was not long before we were in cars and
racing up Route 7 to this great course. I use the word great because there
is no doubt in my mind that on its day this is an outstanding course.
One of the things I look for in a golf course we play on
is the atmosphere and the manners of the staff towards the players, and I
reported the care with which the staff here reacted when one of our players
collapsed last visit. No better care could have been given, and for a long
time now we feel this is probably the friendliest course. So arriving there
and booking in was a little like coming home.
Onto the first tee and on this day we were due to play
the A&B Nines. The A Nine is the low stroke index nine, and on a day like
this we knew if the wind was blowing we were in trouble. Well the wind was
blowing, and as holes 2/3/4/ were into the teeth of it we all struggled.
Still, we did our best and the B Nine proved a little easier. Tough course
and one where if you play well you know it is all worthwhile.
Back at Bert’s it was into the results and on this day we
only had one flight and the winner with the only score better than his
handicap was Joel Flor with 39 points. In second was Walter Bachli with 36
points with a count back for third on 34 points that saw Bob Lindburg in
third and Kenny Chung in fourth.
Near pins went to Tom Cotton, Walter Bachli (2) and Barry
Elphick.
Friday’s podium placers pose
with one of Bert’s staff.
Friday, March 9,
Plutaluang - Stableford
Anyone who knows me is well aware of where I put this
course in my list of ones to play before I die. I can remember not playing
it for years and not missing it, however we have some really weird people
who play at Bert’s and slowly like old age the situation has crept in where
‘someone’ now books the course when he thinks I am not looking. And this is
just because he has some people who actually like playing there. And some
are members.
I have actually played at Navy when it has been in good
condition and have to admit there are days when it is quite passable. On
this day we played East and South and they were sanding the East. The South
was not being sanded so we had 9 holes sanded and 9 holes of assorted green
speed.
Well we got around and finally sat in the restaurant,
which I have to admit is a fine place to eat with a great view, and most
important is great value. We discussed the condition of the course, and as
usual I got beaten into the dust and was outvoted by many to one. People
actually like playing here and more do than do not. I am just pleased ‘The
Admiral’ was not playing with us or I would have been put in the stockade.
The winner today with 42 points was Brian Gabe, ahead of
Bob Watson with 38 points and a gross 74, on count back over Walter Bachli,
with Brian Parrish in fourth with 35 points.
Near pins were claimed by Brian Gabe, Brian Parrish, Stan
Everingham and Bob Watson.
As said the before, the course here is well worth playing
and is also reasonably priced and the staff here are very pleasant and
supportive. So ‘unloved and unwanted’ the Scribe will be playing next time
unless he can accidentally forget to book it, and the ungodly will not let
me forget. T.T.F.N.

Latham signs off with win at Eastern Star
Jomtien Golf with the IPGC
Wednesday, March 7,
Eastern Star – Stableford
A public holiday today so for obvious reasons we came to
Eastern Star to play in three divisions for the men and one for the ladies,
with an additional 36 hole better-ball competition today and Friday for each
two person team with no handicap restrictions. We had 11 groups out with the
cut at 7-15, 16-18 and 19+, plus 6 ladies of course.
Friday’s division 3 winners:
Paul Chabot, Ian Plummer and Rodney Howett.
The greens here at Eastern Star vary each week and there
has been no explanation at all from the management, so who knows what’s
going on.
Marty Rock recorded the best score in all four groups,
winning division 1 with 40 points. The Scots lad Dennis Scougal beat Wilf
Latham on a 16/15 back 6 count back for second after they both scored 22 on
the back nine and 39 points overall.
Frank Kelly won division 2 with 34 points ahead of Harry
Riley in second place who beat Mathew Bley 16/12 on the back six after they
both shot 32 points.
Ian Plummer topped division 3 with 37 points, Russell
Benson was second three points behind, and Willy van Heetveld took third
with 31.
A 19/19 on the back nine and a 16/12 on the back six saw
Miss Nut smiling as she beat Toi Blair, both coming in with 37 points.
Near pins went to
Noi Emmerson, Pranee Bosset, Miss Nut, Ron Miller, Marty
Rock, Dennis Scougal, Harry Vincenzi, Russell Benson, Mathew Bley and Jim
Connelly.
Ya Riley birdied the 17th for the only ‘2’ in division 1
and Russell Benson the 6th in division 2.
After 18 holes the top six scores in the two person
better-ball were Matthew Bley/Ian Plummer 47, Frank Kelly/Marty rock 45,
Harry and Ya Riley 43, Chris Voller/Mikael Andersson, Don and Nut Head,
Darryl and Toi Blair and Bill Bertram/Wilf Latham all with 42 points.
Friday, March 9, Eastern

as Wednesday. Thirty none points won division 1 for Mikael Andersson, Ron
Miller was second with 36 and Bill Bertram took third on 35.
In his last game with us for around three months, Wilf
Latham scored 38 points to win division 2 ahead of Frank Kelly in second one
point behind, and the newly returned Neil Gamble beat Mathew Bley 17/13 on
count back for third after the both scored 34.
Another count back in the ladies division saw Noi
Emmerson pip Toi Blair 14/13 on the back six after they both scored 37 for
the round.
Ian Plummer’s 37 topped the division 3 scores, Paul
Chabot without his mask was second with 35 and Rodney Howett filled the
podium with 34.
Near pins were claimed by Toi Blair, Pranee Bosset, Noi
Emmerson, Bill Bertram, Georges Cullen, Georges Faber, Jerry MaCarthy,
Mathew Bley, Neil Gamble, Harry Riley and Frank Sharkey.

Jason Cole & Gordon
Everingham share the Medals
The IPGC Monthly Medals Report March 2012
Monday, March 5 -
Greenwood
(White Tees)
CSS 72
Division 1 (0-12)
Stroke play
1st Jason Cole (7) net 70
2nd Ron Miller (9) net 70
3rd Yasuo Suzuki (11) net 70
Division 2 (13+)
Stableford
1st Gordon Everingham (24) 40pts
2nd Tony Holehouse (23) 39pts
3rd Evan Millar (24) 39pts
2’s: Glenn Eldershaw, Ron Miller, Alan Pilkington,
John Hayes, Grant Cadell, Peter MacKenzie, Michael Cutmore (two)
Jason Cole.
This month’s IPGC Medals were held over the very
attractive Greenwood course, which while being about the furthest of the
local Pattaya courses, always turns out as a very good venue for a large
competition. This may have been the reason that the day attracted the
largest number of contestants this year with 25 groups teeing it up at the
start. This time was another of those occasions when the course was in top
condition with the greens playing flat and fairly quick.
A fairly strong breeze welcomed the early starters at
around 8.15 am and with the weather staying fine all day good scoring was to
be expected. However, with the course having been set up with the tees in
the backward positions this did not turn out to be the case with only the
second division turning in low scores. This may have be explained partly by
the two divisions playing under the now familiar two different scoring
systems, Stroke Play for the first and Stableford for the second division.
The second division was led in by Gordon Everingham whose
40 points was his best score for nearly a year, during which time he has
been more used to seeing his handicap rise steadily than being in
contention. He was followed in by Tony Holehouse who had to win a count back
over Evan Millar, which he did with a better 22 to 19, leaving Evan in third
place. In general the second division scored very well with Peter MacKenzie
returning a one under card and another six players on level par.
The first division turned out to be a much closer affair
with Jason Cole finally coming out on top to take the medal with a two under
handicap round as he finished with a net 34.5 over the inward half, leaving
Ron Miller in second with a count back of 35.5 and Yasuo Suzuki in third
with 36.5 on the back nine.
There were plenty of 2’s around the course
Every month the presentations are held at one of the IPGC
venues in rotation, this month’s being held at Siam Cats, where as usual an
open buffet had been laid on for the participants prior to the
presentations.
Russell Exley, who acted as the Emcee for the evening,
thanked the golf organizers, Stephen Beard, Len Jones, Glyn Evans and Steve
Mascari for promoting the day and Glyn for handling the registration and
Stephen for handling the scoring with Glyn presenting the Medals and prizes
to the winners.
As usual following the prize giving there were over
twenty lucky draw prizes supplied from the club funds to be won by members
attending the evening festivities, which due to a slight oversight, on the
part of the dogsbody designated to bring back the score cards from the
course, had to be drawn with a new method of lucky numbers.

Murphy makes hay with 40-pointer
PSC golf from the Three Sisters Bar
How the mighty have fallen - from a 43 last week to a 27
this week! Paul Kraft didn’t do too well today this 7th of March in our
first outing of the month with a potential for only three more meetings at
the Pattaya Country Club. PCC will close 9 holes effective 1 April.
Considering the pathetic condition of the greens, this was long overdue. In
a rating system of 1 to 10, with 10 being the lowest, the greens are ranked
28.
Some of the players managed to get through the “greens”
hazards as Rich Murphy came in with 40 points followed by Larry Emerson with
38. Overall the scores were lower but none lower than the 17 carded by an
individual whose name shall not be divulged, particularly since he writes
this item.
Herbie came through with the usual chips, peanuts &
pretzels as well as entrees of outstanding sliced beef and pork. Of course,
this being Makha Bucha Day, only non-alcoholic beverages were available at
Caddy Shack II (snicker, snicker). Rumor has it that the Three Sisters group
will likely move their venue to Plutalung once PCC starts their repair work.

Vorontsov brace secures
maximum points for City
Bangkok Casuals League Div. 1 & 2
Paul Frain
Pattaya City played the French Club Les Gaulois at the
Thai Polo Club last weekend and took an early lead in the third minute when
centre forward Oleg Vorontsov slotted the ball home after some clever
interplay with Tshuma and Dipta.
The French fought back and kept the City defense busy but
they could not manage a shot on target, with their forwards continually
misfiring.
City kept to their game plan and eventually broke through
again when under extreme pressure a French defender misdirected his pass
straight to the waiting and unmarked City forward, who converted to make it
2-0, which remained the score at half time.
After the break the lively French outfit put City’s goal
under more pressure, and despite the home team defending well they
eventually conceded after some slack covering for once allowed Les Gaulois
to get back into the game at 2-1.
City tried to reassert their authority once again and the
livewire Vorontsov kept the French on their toes, but Les Gaulois continued
to attack and threatened to overpower the City defense, however they were
let down by poor finishing once more.
Their profligacy in front of goal would come back to
haunt them as at the other end of the field Vorontsov broke through the
French defense, only to be brought down in the penalty area. The City
forward dusted himself down and scored with ease, sending the keeper the
wrong way to make it 3-1.
The French, who had control of the half, let their
frustrations get the better of them and had two players sent off for violent
conduct and the game ended with City running out 3-1 winners.
City Res continue their
fine run
Pattaya City Res played league leaders Titans at the Thai
Polo Club and the last time these two teams met, City lost 9-1. The home
side were out for revenge and took the game to the league leaders, making an
early breakthrough when centre forward Phowan ran through the Titans
defense, dribbled round the keeper and slotted the ball home to give City
Res the lead.
This shook the Titans but City were in determined mood
and the centre backs duo of Bowden and Glen Wilkins were magnificent in
organizing the defense for the home team. The Titans attacks came in wave
after wave but the City defense held firm until half time with the score
still 1-0.
The second half continued in much the same vein with City
battling manfully to maintain their advantage and midfield dynamo
Wutthiphittayapacom covering every blade of grass and tackling here and
there. Eventually, with the clock ticking down, the away team’s frustrations
boiled over and a melee broke out in the middle of the pitch. After the
referee had sorted it all out and play restarted the Titans managed to break
through but two good saves by the City keeper kept them from scoring.
However, with only two minutes to go, tired legs on the City defenders
allowed the Titans forward to brush his way through once more and score the
equalizer to make the final score 1-1.
This was by far the best performance by Pattaya City Res
this season and just shows what they can do when they want to make the
effort. This match is only part one as both teams face each other again next
weekend in a re-arranged fixture at the same time, same place.

Chiang Mai set to celebrate
25th Anniversary Cricket Sixes
Cricket - Chiang Mai Sixes
style.
The 25th annual Chiang Mai International Cricket Sixes
tournament will run from Sunday 1st to Saturday 7th April, 2012 at the
beautiful and picturesque Chiengmai Gymkhana Club, Thailand’s oldest sports
club which dates back to 1898.
The event is extra special this year at it reaches its
quarter century and promises to be better than ever, with some teams
promising some extra entertainment, which presumably could be both on and
off the field. As usual it has attracted a keen and competitive range of
teams from all over the world.
Each day’s cricket will commence at 8.30 or 9.00am and up
to 15 matches are scheduled each day before drawing of stumps around dusk.
The fact that up to 15 games will be played per day gives you an idea of how
fast and furious the action will be. While cricket is the main theme and
topic, fun and socialising are also high on the agenda.
San Miguel Beer (Thailand) are again the official
tournament sponsor as part of their recognition of the ever-growing
popularity of cricket in Thailand and the consumption of its products will
provide much needed liquid refreshment to many during the course of the
tournament. With cricket an official sport at the Asian Games for the first
time in 2010, Thai cricketers were most welcome of the gracious support of
San Miguel.
For 1 week, 32 men’s teams from 12 countries around the
world will meet to play cricket and enjoy the warm welcome and unique
hospitality and charm that Chiang Mai provides to its visitors. The sounds
of willow bats striking rock-hard leather cricket balls, the cries of
“Howzat!” as players are out, and the pleasure of a cold drink (or two or
six!!) in the early April hot season sun will be enjoyed by everyone who
attends. For more information go to www. chiangmaisixes.com.

Local bowlers lead the way at mixed triples tournament
Tournament winners Frank, Dave
and Dennis pose for a photo with ‘Rolex’ (right).
One of Thailand’s major lawn bowls competitions was held
at the Retreat Lawn Bowling Club just outside Pattaya on March 10-11 and was
sponsored by a familiar face to all lawn bowlers in the city, Peter ‘Rolex’
Brown.
This event was a mixed triple competition and saw nineteen
teams of three taking part with bowlers coming from Pattaya and Bangkok, plus
the Thai Army and Navy. Some of those on show even had previous experience
playing for the Thai national team.
The Retreat, run by Albert and Mai is one of the top bowling
clubs in Thailand and their greens were in superb condition for this event.
The teams line up on the first
day.
With the high standard of teams, the competition was very
keenly fought and after the preliminary group stages were played out on the
first day and second morning, the final saw a team of expert Thais take on local
talent in the form of Dave ‘the pro’, Frank and Dennis. The match seesawed
backwards and forwards and because of a delay caused by a rain shower it wasn’t
until 8 p.m. that one team could celebrate and the other be left to rue on what
might have been.
It was a very close fought match but eventually the local
knowledge told as Dave, Frank and Dennis prevailed to keep the home honours
intact. The winners were presented with a beautiful perpetual trophy by
tournament sponsor ‘Rolex’ while the runners up and minor place getters also
received smaller trophies for their efforts.
After the grand dinner and presentation a Karaoke was held
with lots of singing, dancing, drinking and swimming (for those who were pushed
or fell in the pool).
The sponsor Peter would like to say a big thanks to Albert,
Mai and the staff at The Retreat for putting on a wonderfully organised event
and also to all the teams who supported it. Next year’s tournament is already
eagerly anticipated.
Top bowlers from around Thailand
took part in the 2-day event.

Regent’s Pattaya holds Under 13 FOBISSEA Games
Swimming ended with a tire
race to fight for first place.
Alicia Warner
The term ‘truly international’ has always gone hand in
hand with the Regent’s School, and the recent U13 FOBISSEA games hosted at
the school only reaffirmed this further. Six international schools from
Southeast Asia shared the grounds and the facilities of the Regent’s to take
part in the most awaited school sporting competition of the year. It was
certainly easy to tell; the atmosphere was buzzing with excitement from the
students to the staff and the attending parents.
International schools from Thailand, Brunei, Malaysia and
Vietnam met for a weekend of well planned, competitive events topped off by
a Gala dinner at Cholchan Pattaya Resort. The Regent’s was joined by the
British International School of Phuket (BISP) and the International School
of Bangkok (ISB). From Vietnam, the British International School of Vietnam
(BISV), Jerudong International School (JIS) from Brunei and the
International School of Penang (Uplands) from Malaysia were all in good
spirits despite being away from home.
The international students
line up for a group photo.
“It’s great to see students who have progressed – some
students have been here since year 4 so this is now their fourth or fifth
FOBISSEA games and have FOBISSEA friends,” said Paul McConnell, the event
manager of the games who explained the pleasant relationship the competing
schools have with one another. “Once the sport’s done they all mix very well
and they all are good friends,” he added.
The heat didn’t stop the
students giving it their all.
The three-day event began with an intense, yet friendly
swimming competition. Despite the sun’s attempts to force all to seek either
shade or air conditioning, everyone kept at it with vigour and the
competitive mood never waned throughout. There could only be one winner,
although all teams pushed themselves until the end, and BISV accepted their
victory with grace.
The athletics event, on the other hand, was a different
story as the weather took a turn for the worse later in the afternoon. It
was an unfortunate affair as the high jump, long jump, javelin and discus
all couldn’t take place as a thunderstorm crept in to join the excitement.
However, the buzz returned very quickly as it cleared so the relay could go
on and BISV walked away as the overall victors.
“One of the best moments was when the thunderstorm
finished at the stadium so we could actually do some athletics,” said a
relieved Paul McConnell. “We could actually get the kids winning medals -
that’s been my highlight so far.”
BISV share team celebrations.
The football and basketball games had an air of great
team spirit and the support was endless. BISV won both the girls’ football
and boys’ basketball and JIS claimed first place in boys’ football. But it
was the final of the girls’ basketball that kept the crowd on the edge of
their seats as the home team scored ‘the golden basket’. A thrilling moment,
The Regent’s claimed a victory of their own on their own grounds.
After lengthy planning and preparation it seemed to pay
off as The Regent’s hosting skills were met with great reception. The head
of PE at The Regent’s, Ainsley Harris explained, “The preparation has been
phenomenal and that’s enabled all of us to have such smooth games and just
enjoy it.”
Phil Drake, the director of sport at BISV saw the perks
of the on-site facilities. “The good thing about the Regent’s school is that
they’ve got facilities on campus so it reduces the amount of travelling
we’re having to do. In Vietnam there’s a lot more travelling to be done
because we have to use stadiums and outside facilities as well. The
organisation has been first class; plenty of water, plenty of food, that’s
the main thing for the students and safety is the key to it as well so it’s
been great.”
What three words best describe the events overall?
“Exciting, Competitive and Friendly”, Mike Walton, the chairman of FOBISSEA
and the principle of The Regent’s School Pattaya, summed up the recent
FOBISSEA games with ease.
