A snapper and grouper galore day

Sea Fishing with the KPK Food Services Club

Happy ‘hookers’ with their prize catches.

Mike Gerrard
With me matey Colin Gregg making up the numbers the day before, we set off at 8.00 a.m. on a good calm day but cool and overcast. There was some worry that we would experience some of the storms of the last few days, but Buddha looked upon us favourably.
Sadly today’s trip was one of the few where the big ones were just not around. However the catch of really good sized snapper and grouper (as shown in the photo) made the day a huge success. I have to say that it is my personal preference to catch these sized fish rather than the big ones. They are delicious to eat. However there is always about landing the big ones.
Now the winter months are approaching the waters should cool down a little which in turn usually brings the biggies nearer to shore. It was at the end of November last year when the sailfish were around.
It was Paul Adamson who was awarded the KPK Food Services voucher for the best catch of the day along with his pal, Carl Jones who was awarded the runner up prize of the KPK Food Services hat.
Poor John French had a rather lean time of it today and along with Colin Gregg and myself we were limited to a few less. It was good to see Keith Keohane out with us this time. Keith, of course, is the benefactor of the donated prizes. He managed to take quite a haul back for all of his staff to enjoy.
Best laugh of the day was given to us by Colin Gregg. Firstly he managed to put a hook through his finger. With the amount of blood coming from the wound (salt water being saline makes the blood flow a little quicker) we suggested he put his finger in the water to attract a few sharks. Sadly he declined to assist. However, as we were about to disembark at the keyside, Colin decided he would get off first and duly cocked his one leg over the side of the boat and onto an interim horizontal old tree trunk as the next step to terra firma. Luckily we managed to grab him as the trunk snapped in two. He tried so desperately to get them sharks to the boat for us.
Never mind, half a mile down the road we stopped for a beer to reflect on the day’s events.
Next trips are both the Saturday 12th and Sunday 13th November. Both dates do have a couple of spaces available at this stage. If you have your own tackle, bring it along, but if not all bait and tackle is available. All you have to do is bring your own food and drinks. Transport can also be arranged.
If anyone would like to join us on either of these dates please give me (Mike) a call on 087 091 7565. The Saturday 12th November will again be the prize day with KPK Foods. Also anyone can privately book the boat for their own party if so desired, any day of the week.

PSC October sea-fishing report

The hardy anglers return to port after a choppy day out at sea.

Captain Rich
The week of the trip a typhoon had ripped through the Philippines and Vietnam leaving a lot of rain water and storm damage in its wake, so Dene and I were concerned that the trip was in question and we may have to cancel.
As luck would have it, the storm went to the north and we woke to a day with no rain and little wind. We packed our gear and headed out for a day fishing the Gulf. When we arrived at the Khram Marina Resort the usual suspects were waiting and ready to go. The group consisted of Phil and Nat Langley, Jeff Doutch without Khammoon (she had set her priorities and opted to watch the Australian Rules Football final, guess we know where the brains are in that family), Dene and I. We had two new fishermen join us this month Paul Adamson and friend Mike - welcome to the group.
Even though the storm had missed the Sattahip area the seas were still quite large and white capped as far as the eye could see. This made for difficult fishing conditions what with the pitching and rolling and bobbing up and down for hours on end. I had to stop being seasick.
I chose to fish for the larger fish and was quite happy to set the rod and hide, I mean position myself in the galley so I could observe and assist the other fisherman as they fought the waves and occasional water over the bow in tough fishing conditions.
By noon we had little to show for our efforts. I don’t think we had more than five fish; although Dene, the pla dang king, did land one nice gray about one and a half kilos. I was starting to think Khammoon must have known something, maybe it’s a Buddhist meditation thing.
Between Phil, Nat, Geoff and I we had only one fish, a nice gray, much like Dene’s, caught by Phil. We were fishing the north side of the island and the current was a strong out going tide and we needed a lot of weight to get to the fish.
At noon we decided to shift our position and moved south. I gave up on the large fish and my secure position in the galley and rigged up my small fishing pole. It wasn’t long before we were into the fish. We were hauling them in at a quick pace. We would drift into school and everybody would catch fish. Then drift out of the school and take a breather, grab a sandwich or drink. It was a tough go with the big tide and high waves but someone had to do it.
By the end of the day everyone had nice bags of grays, snappers, grouper and pladang. Dene had the largest catch about eight kilos. I think everyone had a nice trip despite the conditions. I can speak for at least one of the fisherman and say that the trip was fun but exhausting and I know that person had a great nights sleep.
We have some new PSC members interested fishing and are hoping to plan trips so more can enjoy the sport with us. Looking forward to seeing the new members and of course the regulars, including Khammoon.

Phuket King’s Cup Regatta gets ready to celebrate a quarter century

The Phuket King’s Cup Regatta trophy – a replica
is given to the winner of each class.

The Phuket King’s Cup Regatta is now in its twenty-fifth year, after first sailing in 1987 to celebrate His Majesty the King of Thailand’s 60th birthday. Under Royal Patronage, the event is organised by the Phuket King’s Cup Regatta Organising Committee under the auspices of the Royal Varuna Yacht Club in Pattaya.
Recognised throughout the eastern hemisphere as the premier sailing event of its kind, the Phuket King’s Cup Regatta will again this year present a spectacular display of Asia’s finest sailing talent who will compete on this most coveted international stage. 2011’s event will run from December 3 to December 10, beginning with two days of registration, briefing and practice, before five days of exceptional racing concluding in the Royal Awards Ceremony on the final Saturday.
The Phuket King’s Cup is a competition steeped in history and magic. The Regatta was established to celebrate a most auspicious occasion; in 1986, a number of Thailand’s yachting fraternity met to discuss what they could do as a special tribute to His Majesty the King’s forthcoming Fifth Cycle, or 60th birthday, for the following year on December 5, 1987.
After careful discussion, it was decided to hold a Royal Regatta. Phuket was to become the glittering location for this sailing spectacle; the first such event held in the beautiful waters of the Andaman Sea.
The inaugural Phuket King’s Cup Regatta was realised in 1987 by Royal Varuna sailors, including Commodore Chris King, Dr. Rachot Kanjanavanit, Al Chandler and Adolph Knees. It was yachting and Phuket aficionado M.L. Tridosyuth Devakul, better known as renowned architect and developer Mom Tri, who placed the resources of his recently opened Phuket Yacht Club Hotel at Nai Harn Bay in Phuket, at the Regatta organisers’ disposal.
The first Regatta began with a mixture of keelboats, catamarans, Lasers and even windsurfers. Few who were there at the time will ever forget Varuna member Reg Chambers, who sailed a Laser, calling “starboard” on a 45-ft keelboat, which had to give way.
Like any prominent yacht racing event, the Phuket King’s Cup Regatta has developed its own folk-lore. Scott McCook, for example, sailed his beach-launched catamaran up from Singapore, won all five races in one year, then sailed the small cat back to Singapore harbour.
More recently the Regatta has become a big boat event, attracting keelboats and ocean-going catamaran teams from around the world. As a principal fixture on the Asian yachting circuit, the Regatta annually features upwards of 100 boats and 2,000 participants, ranging from the high tech yachts in Racing Class, to live-aboard ocean cruisers, multihulls and classics.
International-standard race management has been combined with lively beach parties during regatta week to create this world-renowned yacht racing exhibition.
Kevin Whitcraft, President of the King’s Cup Regatta Organising Committee explained the reasons behind why there are so many keen competitors each year; “If you were to ask any of the competitors that take part each year why they compete in the Phuket King’s Cup Regatta, you will get as many answers as there are competitors. For some it is the ideal of taking part; for others, it is the besting of their friends and colleagues. A handful are in it for the glory and it is always nice to take a trophy home,” said Kevin.
There are prizes up for grabs each night with trophies for first, second and third places in each class. Overall class trophies (first, second and third) are awarded at the end of the week for series winners. After a successful week of racing, a boat’s haul of trophies can easily fill a shelf or a suitcase.
The King’s Cup Trophy, the Royal Trophy, is very special. The original trophy is made from silver seated on a column of ash wood and was designed by ML Tridhosyuth Devakul, the original owner of Mom Tri’s Boathouse and one of the founders of the Phuket King’s Cup Regatta back in 1987.
The trophy features 9 sails rising up from a silver bed that represents the sea. On top of the sails is the symbol of His Majesty the King of Thailand, which is known as the Tra Sanyalak, along with his initials and the Thai symbol for 9 as the King is the ninth of this dynasty. Surmounting all of this is the King’s crown, symbolising his patronage of the event. Winners of each class receive a quarter size replica of the Royal Trophy.
Sponsors of the 2011 Phuket King’s Cup Regatta include Kata Group Resorts Thailand, PTT Group, Siam Winery, Centara Grand Beach Resort Phuket, Boathouse and Sunsail. (Press release)

‘Dolphins’ looking forward to early return home

Construction work continues on the new main stand at Nongprue Stadium as workers race against the clock to have it completed ahead of schedule.

Staff reporters
Construction crews are working around the clock to complete work on the new main stand at Pattaya United’s Nongprue Stadium to enable the Thai Premier League club to return to its official home ground before the end of the current league campaign.
The majority of the concrete structural work has already been laid down on the new 1,000 seat capacity south stand and pylons have started to be erected to support the cantilevered roof.
Members of the Pattaya United board carried out an inspection of the stadium at the end of last month and have encouraged the building contractors to pull out all the stops to complete the construction ahead of schedule.
One of the inspectors, Nongprue mayor and team advisor My Chianit, said that, “right now the construction is going step by step and there are some parts that still require renovation. Nevertheless, the new grandstand will be beautiful and unique for Pattaya United fans who will fully experience the benefits. I have insisted to the contractor that the amphitheatre must be ready within two months.”

Pattaya United Manager Sombat Piyyansiri said he hopes to see the team run out onto the field at Nongprue for United’s clash with the Robbie Fowler led Muang Thong United at the end of November, however, due to the recent spell of bad weather that has caused some construction delays, it seems unlikely that the stadium will be ready for use by the end of next month as United also still need to carry out a safety inspection and apply for approval from the Thai Premier League once the new stand is completed.
Additional work is also planned for outside the stadium to alleviate traffic problems on match days. Wiwat Aeamlaey, the team’s LOC, added that all the current inconvenience is purely for the long term benefit of the club and its supporters and has asked for Dolphin fans to be patient a little longer.
In the meantime United drew a blank in their Thai Premier League fixture against BEC Tero Sasana FC at the IPE Stadium in Chonburi last Sunday when they were a held to a 0-0 draw by the visitors. The Dolphins had to thank goalkeeper Narit for keeping them in the game in the opening half hour as he pulled of a series of fine saves to deny BEC. United had the ball in the back of their opponents net just before half time but Ekollo was flagged for offside.
The second half produced very few clear chances as both teams seemed to be content to settle for a point.
United’s next match is this coming Saturday, Oct. 22, at home against Sisaket FC at the IPE Stadium in Chonburi. Kick-off is at 6 p.m.

Peirrel edges Taylor in duel at Green Valley

PSC golf from The Golf Club Sports Bar

The Bangpra Boys with Kevin (center).

Monday, Oct. 10, Green Valley - Stableford
1st John Pierrel (11) 41pts
2nd Kevin Taylor (7) 40pts
3rd Muffy Kerr (10) 38pts

What a hardy bunch of lads we have at The Golf Club! This must be the most rain we have ever had in Pattaya for October yet we still had 20 of the best golfers in town turn out for today’s soirée to RGV. The course has held up OK under such tough weather as the greenskeeping crew must be on loads of overtime this month.

Wednesday’s winners Jack Spencer & Nelly Stoer.

John Peirrel took top position with 41 points on the day, and hard fought points they were. It was a tough slog for Kevin Taylor as well but his 40 points gave him sole second place (again) and Muffy “Who’s the daddy?” Kerr delivered 38 points for third. Muffy is better known as Ty and Jason’s dad as his boys are tearing up the Junior Tour and are future Asian Tour stars in the making.

Wednesday, Oct. 12, Bangpra - Stableford
A Flight
1st Jack Spencer (9) 35pts
2nd Kevin Taylor (7) 34pts
3rd John Emmerson (10) 33pts
B Flight
1st Nelly Stoer (19) 33pts
2nd Ernie MacInerney (11) 32pts
3rd Sugar Ray Handford (19) 32pts

What’s that expression, always the bridesmaid …? With a second last week and 2 second place finishes this week, poor Kevin Taylor can’t seem to close the deal. Always just one point out, he is playing strong and consistent golf and scoring well so hang in there Kev, your day will come mate.

Jack Spencer had no problem with today’s win on one of the best courses these days in Pattaya, Bangpra. Everyone seems to love this place and with a turnout of 28 golfers we had a 2 division comp on the day. Lovely Nelly Stoer won the B Flight as Ernie Mac took second and sweet Sugar Ray hung on for third. You go girl!

Don’t forget that the T.Q Masters is on Friday the 21st so come on down to The Golf Club and join us for one of Pattaya’s oldest running golf tournaments, sponsored by our buddies at The Tahitian Queen.

Note: The Golf Club is located on Soi LK Metro, off Soi Buakhao and Soi Diana junction. Breakfast is available from 07:00. We can be reached on 085 434 3377 or [email protected] or our website: www.golfclub pattaya.com and www. facebook.com/golfclubpattaya

Shuichi comes back with a big one

IPGC golf from The Haven Weekly

Wednesday, Oct. 12, Rayong C. C. - Stableford
CSS 72
1st Erik Donnestad (4) 36pts
2nd Rod Howett (23) 33pts
3rd Yasuo Suzuki (9) 31pts
4th Trevor Schirmer (15) 30pts

Erik Donnestad.

Following seemingly weeks of wet weather and Monday’s cancelled competition, it was finally back to at least the semblance of normal golf even though the courses for the week remained fairly well watered. At least Pattaya has escaped the worst of the flooding experienced in many other parts of the country although Pattana lost the lake to the right of the first fairway on the B course when the dam/outflow was totally overcome by one of the recent heavy storms. Fortunately the play of the course is not affected in any way at all.

Erik Donnestad returned another level handicap round that proved to be sufficient to take the day’s top honours, and finished in style with a gross level par back nine to seal the win.

Rod Howett came the nearest to catching Erik but could not match him over the closing holes and had to settle for second spot ahead of Yasuo Suzuki, who was two behind, and Trevor Schirmer in fourth another one back.
There were no 2’s in either division.

Before presenting the prizes The Doc welcomed back Markus Kamfjord, Mark Armstrong and Paul Hartley.

Friday, Oct. 14, Khao Kheow - Stableford
CSS 72
1st Shuichi Kodaka (18) 42pts
2nd Paul Hartley (19) 37pts
3rd Alan Griffiths (11) 32pts
4thErik Donnestad (4) 30pts
5th Mark Armstrong (21) 30pts

Having just returned from a short visit to Japan, Shuichi Kodaka really took the field apart with an outstanding round of golf that finished at six under his handicap to ensure a return to the lower handicap level that he enjoyed a few weeks earlier. It was altogether a very satisfying day’s golf as it did not include any single point holes which underlined the consistency of his play.

Shuichi Kodaka.

In the event it was easily the best of the day as Paul Hartley could only marvel at the size of the difference in scoring, finishing in second place after expecting to possibly win with a one under handicap return over what is always a difficult course and made even harder with the wet conditions.

Alan Griffiths also made a positive return to Pattaya, after having been absent for just over six months and hardly having time to look at a golf course let alone play one during that time, returning a solid round for third place two ahead of Erik Donnestad and Mark Armstrong with Erik taking fourth spot with a better count back of 17 to 14 over the inward half.
Once again there were no 2’s in either division.
Back at The Haven there was a welcome for new member Rex Vidler and welcome backs for Shuichi Kodaka, Alan Griffiths and Nigel Jenkinson.

Note: The Haven group now departs Soi 13 at the earlier time of 9 am until further notice. If you would like to play with the group you can contact mobile 082 219 0965 or call in to the hotel at 185 Soi 13 between Beach Road and 2nd Road. All transportation to the course is arranged and you do not need to sign up prior to the day, but you should be there by 8.30 on Mondays, Wednesday, Fridays and 9.00 am on Sundays on the days you wish to play. A schedule of courses to be played can be found on our web site at www.thehaven-hotel.com.

Pattaya Sports Club 110th racks up a century

“Thirty eight points - If only we …” Golf Chairman Joe Mooneyham and PSC President Tony Oakes reflect on their golfing misfortune.

Report Nigel Cannon/ Photos William Macey

Friday, Oct. 14 - Eastern Star Golf Club

It was a fine morning as 100 players made their way to Eastern Star to compete in today’s PSC Monthly. With all the recent wet weather, eyes were upward looking for what the day was to be like- but no problem as the rain held off until much later in the evening.

Long and short of the winners.

The course, which has had its up’s and down’s during the past few years, was in a reasonable condition if a little soggy in places as expected. The greens were in good shape but ‘pick, clean, and place’ was the order of the day.

Golf Chairman Joe Mooneyham decided that the day’s competition would be a ‘two person’ better-ball with separate competitions for Ladies, Couples and Men.
It was the booking in team of Secretary Paul Donahue and ‘regular’ Nigel Cannon who administered the registration with a few last minute adjustments due to late cancellations. This gave Joe the opportunity to play and he teamed up with PSC President Tony Oakes.

PSC supporters are getting younger.

The course was busy as our friends from Jomtien Golf also had a two tee start – but with some give and take all went well with just a little hold up at the turn.
There was only one Ladies team – Arisa Hennings and Duangden Butpanya who enjoyed their day and came in with 30 points and were awarded first place!
Seven pairs took part in the ‘Couples Competition’ and Thip & Jim Federspile and Rotjana & Bryan Neal both came in with 41 points with Thip and Jim just getting the nod on count back.

Time to lay off the Sang Som Gordon.

With no flights the men’s competition went to 6 places with count backs required to determine both 1st and 2nd and 3rd and 4th. Adam Oyston and Jan Eriksen won on count back from Gebi Kindle and Nigel Jones both with 40 points.

The team of President and Golf Chairman came in a creditable 5th with 38 points and an ‘if only’ expressed here and there by both.

Back in the clubhouse, where Joe and Nigel were checking the results and Bob Linborg was out on the course collecting the near pins, it was time for a drink and a chat then off to Pattaya for the presentation.

Smiles from the winning ladies.

Once again Lewiinski’s had done the PSC proud with a banner announcing the 110th Monthly and another ‘truly sumptuous’ buffet – then the rain came!
Time for the presentation – regular MC Nigel called order and introduced President Tony Oakes. Tony congratulated Joe on another great day and, as a past Golf Chairman, he was only too aware of the work involved in organizing such a day. Joe followed Tony and expressed his appreciation to all participants and his team in making today another memorable occasion.

The Lucky draw followed with Duangden drawing the winners, and many going home with a ‘little extra’ to what they came with.

50/50 winner, the shy, retiring Bob Newell (left) with Joe Mooneyham.

What has become a tradition is to end the day with the 50/50 draw drawn by Joe. The prize went to someone who had been quiet all evening - the gentle, big Bob Newell - much to the delight of him and his friends.

The 111th Monthly will be at Mountain Shadow on Friday November 18th – sign-up at the PSC Clubhouse.

Ladies
1st Arisa Hennings & Duangden Butpanya 30pts
Couples
1st Thip & Jim Federspile 41pts

Men
1st Adam Oyston & Jan Eriksen 40pts
2nd Geri Kindle & Nigel Jones 40pts

Impressive stuff from Nellis

IPGC Pattaya Golf Society at Rabbi’s Elephant Bar

The Pattaya Golf Society visited Pleasant Valley on Monday, 10th October for a stableford competition and the stoic PGS golfers travelled through heavy rain to get there but amazingly the day stayed dry allowing the golfers to enjoy the event playing off the blue tees. The course was well prepared but soft fairways gave very little run, making the course play long.

Len Jones, playing steady golf, managed to overcome three successive “wipes” in the middle of the back nine to finish with thirty points in third place whilst Gary Bolger took second easily with a solid 34 point return. The winner on a course demanding accuracy was Don Nellis and a score of thirty-six points impressed everyone on the day.

Robbie Taylor, playing to establish a handicap, recorded the only birdie ‘2’ of the day but being “in it” allowed him to “win it”!
A maiden Booby Bevy went to Brian Kelly as he missed the turn off the highway and ended up touring the hinterland of Chonburi, arriving late at the course and foregoing the opening hole playing “catch-up”.

Don doubles up

With storms still lashing the region the Pattaya Golf Society visited Khao Kheow on Wednesday, 12th October to play a stableford competition on the C and B nines which were in a dreadful condition, heavily damaged by heavy rain, soggy and with many bare areas of dead grass. The management has a gargantuan task ahead if the course is to be up to racing speed by the start of the high season.

Starting on an empty course the group made good progress from the white tees. After nine holes the inevitable happened and the heaven’s opened holding the field at bay for fifty minutes. The concluding nine holes were then completed on saturated fairways and in steady light drizzle.

Masanori Takano managed to collect 32 points for third place, one behind Wichai Tananusorn’s second place score. It was left to Don Nellis to continue where he had left off two days previously and come in with 34 points for a fine successive win.

Masa recorded the sole birdie ‘2’ of the day on C3 and Mr Len accepted the Booby Bevy for throwing the towel in after thirteen soggy holes in search of a hot shower. All in all a grim day at Khao Kheow.

Job done...time for a break!

The Pattaya Golf Society visited the Emerald course in Ban Chang on Friday, 14th October to play a stableford competition on a course in quite good condition though a little soft underfoot and with quick greens. An unusual start saw the group play off the tenth first and excellent progress was made throughout with the groups all finishing their rounds in under four hours.

It was a day when the lesser lights dominated with Paul Bartlett making a rare appearance on the podium with 33 points giving him third place. One point ahead was Glenn Martin, who played solidly throughout with an excellent short game, and the ubiquitous Don Nellis who topped the lists for the third successive time this week. It was Don’s final appearance before taking a short break in Malaysia.
There were no birdie ‘2’s and the Booby Bevy was “taylormade” for Tony Thorne. He had been advised by a friend to tighten the screw on the clubhead of his R9 driver before his round and the head duly sheared off. He is now looking to do the same to his advisor!

Monks top scores in rain-affected week

Jomtien Golf with the IPGC

Friday’s winning Irish boys, Cully Monks and Martin McAteer,
with the Siam Cats ladies.

Monday, October 10, Pattaya C.C. – Stableford

A heavy thunderstorm started here in Jomtien around 6 a.m. and by the time we reached Siam Cats there had been two hours of continuous rain, Soi 5 was waterlogged with six inches of water rolling down the road towards the beach. The phone now started ringing with people saying they couldn’t leave their condos due to the weather conditions so we rang the course and were told it has been raining heavily there for the past two hours, so we cancelled the day.

Wednesday, Oct. 12, St. Andrews – Stableford

There were seven groups (28 players) signed up for today in probably our last visit here until the low season kicks in next May because of the price. There were a couple of late cancellations and no-shows so we ended up with 24 in the group.
Yet again it started raining after four holes for the first group and this was intermittent until we reached the ninth tee. Some of the fairways had been sodden and a few of the greens waterlogged up till then, so we decided to play this hole and call it a day for the third round in a row.
Most of the groups behind had already gone back to the clubhouse and many, thanks to the management, received an eighteen-hole rain check with buggy as well.

Friday, Oct. 14, Eastern Star – Stableford

The skies today looked a bit healthier than they had for the past ten days and as we arrived here the sun was out with a mediocre wind coming off the coast, so pleasant conditions all round.
The cut today in the men’s division with 36 out was 3-13 in div 1, 14-18 div 2 and 19 plus in division 3, with the ladies in their own competition.
The Irish boy Cully Monks won division 2 with 35 points, Frank Kelly was second one point behind and Ya Riley took third with 32. Another 35 in division 3 won it for Jim Lane with Marytn Arnold a regular visitor from Hong Kong second on 34 and Lee Casey in third with a meager 28.
Toi Blair won the ladies division with 33 points with Josie Monks second on 28.
Roy Thornton topped division 1 with 34 points with Sean Connolly, playing off 10, in second on 33 and Bill Bertram beat Jon Lay, Marty Rock and Barry Wellings on a 20/16/16/13 back nine count back for third as they all came in with 31 points.
Martin McAteer birdied the 13th in division 1 in the ‘2’s to take the day’s pot while there were 4 rollovers in division 2 until the following Friday.
Near pins went to Rob Lamond, Cully Monks (2), Sean Connolly, Tony Hill, Martin McAteer and Chris Voller.

Mitchell produces round of the week at Emerald

Travellers Rest Golf Group

Saturday’s Div 1 winner Jim Sykes with Mod Chaviraksa & Mike Rushant.

Tim Dalton.
Sadly Monday’s game was cancelled due to torrential rain, however spirits were not dampened as instead we descended upon the snooker hall where Fergus showed that he is a better snooker player than he is a golfer.
The rain eased somewhat on Tuesday and we decided to play as planned at Plutaluang where an impressive 39 points in the damp was recorded by myself, winning the day by 1 shot, and was interesting to note that the top 5 were all high handicappers with those in single figures well down the leaderboard.
Round of the week was Tim Mitchell’s 43 points on Saturday at Emerald which included an impressive 2 on the tricky par 3 fifth.
Thursday and Saturday were much better with some good turnouts on both days and the results are as follows.
Tuesday, Oct. 11, Plutaluang N & E – Stableford
1st Tim Dalton (25) 39pts
2nd Brad Todd (25) 38pts
3rd Pierre Ruggieri (26) 37pts

Carmody comes home first at damp Khao Kheow

PSC golf from Tropical Berts

Tuesday’s winners pose with Bert’s ‘Pocket Dynamo’.

Derek Brook
Tuesday, October 11, Khao Kheow - Stableford
Is it ever going to stop raining? Once again the rain clouds were apparent and the day dark and dismal. However so far this year we have not lost a day’s golf through bad weather, despite some close calls. So off we went to Khao Kheow and apart from a light sprinkling the day held some promise.
Arriving at the course we were soon booked in and as is usual these days we were greeted with those magic words, “carts on the path only”, still a game is a game so off we went. We were to play the B & C Nines and it was soon apparent that the rain had caused damage to the course and the work gangs were all over the place. Like most courses the constant rain has caused much damage; the fairways were still quite wet, and in places it was difficult to find a place to put the ball, still this is a great course and we moved on.
What is needed is a week without water as the climate is such that you can grow grass on a billiard ball. Still we moved on and found the greens were as tricky as ever and as the day progressed many more golfers turned up to play the course and the holes behind us were filled with golfers.
The day wore on and as it has done of late as we went around it got very humid for a couple of hours and then as we neared the end of the round it started to get dark, very dark and as we reached the end of the round it started to spit, but for us it was into a nice shower and up into the restaurant. The heavens opened as it has often of late and once more we were lucky. Into the car and back to Pattaya where we were told it had been raining all day. By the time we back it was down to a spitty rain.
At the presentation we found that the scores were generally not good. The winner with 38 points was Don Carmody with a count back for second place on 34 points that saw Bernie Cairns in second and Mick O’Meara in third. Not wanting to go into the wet night we had a few to pass the time. T.T.F.N.
Near Pins: Ted, T.J., Mashi Kaneta, Mike Gaussa and Bernie Cairns.

‘Boots and Shews’

PSC golf from Lewiinski’s Golf Society

Sunday, October 9, Green Valley - Stableford
A Flight
1st Barry Copestake (13) net 66
2nd Ian Halfpenny (12) net 70
B Flight
1st Espen Bristoferson (29) net 70
2nd Mick Shrosbree (15) net71
Ladies Flight
1st Yui Bietry (9) net 74
Near Pins: No 4 Francis Goyons, No 9 Bob Newell, No 12 Sim Davis, No 16 Colin Davis.

Sunday’s winner Barry Copestake.

The column has emphasized before that Green Valley is set up on Sunday to be knocked off, and nobody knocked it off better than Barry ‘the boot’ Copestake and his net 66. This was Barry’s first medal victory in around twelve years of trying. Barry’s fine performance also gave him man of the match and the senior flight top spot, plus a cut glass whiskey tumbler and a bottle of Jameson’s Irish whiskey rounded out with automatic entry to play in the gold Medal later on in the year, but most importantly Barry’s name to be etched on Lewiinski’s wall of shame.
Barry’s Stella performance was 4 shots clear of society regular Ian ‘lose change’ Halfpenny.
The junior flight saw Essen Bristoferson come out on top with a net 70. I have heard on the grape vine that Essen has been taking advice from the Donkey to sort out his iron play, and it seems to have worked.
Essen was followed very closely up the podium steps by Barry ‘the boot’s’ playing partner Mike Shoesbry (sorry I could not stop myself) a shot adrift. Amazingly three of the four podium places were filled by players in the same four-ball; Barry, Mike and Ian. I haven’t a clue who the other one is.

Mick Shrosbree.

Sim Jenny Davis took the top spot in the ladies flight with a net74. She also gets an invitation to play along with Barry in the year end Gold Medal.
Back at Lewiinski’s and after the presentation it was snowball time, and it was the man of the match Barry the boot that walked off with the money, but to his credit Barry treated the lads to a round of Lewiinski’s best.

Tuesday, October 11, Mountain Shadow - Stableford
A Flight
1st Jan Eriksen (14) 37pts
2nd Fergus Obrien (6) 34pts
B Flight
1st Peter Henshaw (15) 35pts
2nd Fergus Obrien (28) 32pts

It is always a great day, albeit a tough one when the gang takes on the formidable Mountain Shadow. However don’t tell that to Jan the quite one Eriksen and his 37 points. Jan was the only player to better par on the day for the senior flight and man of the match honors. Jan was followed a fair way back up the podium steps by Francis Goyons who finished three shots in arrears for the silver.
The junior flight was an all Irish affair as Peter ‘Don O’corleone’ Henshaw returned to winning ways with a solid 35 points. Fellow Irishman Fergus O’Brien was looking up at Peter on the podium steps as his three shots adrift return gave him the silver.
The Donkey, never far away from the money, had the biggest smile as he slotted home the only ‘2’ of the day.

Wednesday,October 12,Pattana - Stableford
1st Derek Walsh (9) 37pts
2nd Nick Odnoral (17) 35pts
3rd Christy Knight (23) 35pts

Only Irishman Derek Walsh showed the right stuff as he returned to the level of play emblematic of his Stella(r) Pattaya career with a two better than the field. Derek was also the only player to better par, not bad on Gussan’s always intriguing, sometimes diabolical Pattana lay out.
Aussi Nick Odnoral came out of a three-way count back to take the silver while Co. Dublin’s Christy ‘Good’ Knight with treachery unknown to the relatively innocent Thierry Petremont stole the bronze and relegated Thierry to a bar stool and left him satang less.
No 2’s were recorded so it’s a rollover next Monday.
Note: Lewiinski’s is situated on Pattaya Land Soi 1, Beach Road Soi 13/3 near to Walking Street. Anyone wishing to play with us just pop in and add your name to the list or call Colin on 089 826 0764. Transport is provided.

All washed out

PSC golf from The Fairways Golf Society

Tuesday, October 11, Laem Chabang - Stableford
There was only one outing this week due to everyone playing in Killkenny’s four-man scramble on Thursday, so we decided to play one of Pattaya’s superior courses, Laem Chabang.
With everybody really looking forward to playing here it was unfortunate that the weather turned against us. After nine holes the heavens opened up and the rain poured down. We waited 20 minutes for it to stop before we could start again but every time we resumed play it lashed down again within a few more minutes and the course became virtually unplayable so we cancelled the competition.
Checking the score cards in the club house afterwards we decided that the winner would have been Ken Meek for the hundred meters breaststroke, Andy Crabb came second in the crawl while in third place was Alan Pilkington with the butterfly and trailing in last was Tony Duthie in the backstroke.
Note: The Fairways Driving Range and Golf Society is situated at the top of Pattaya Klang on Sukhumvit Road. Anyone wishing to play with us can call into the club house and put their names down on the lists provided or call Scott on 084 389 2379. Transport is provided if required.

Simon brings out the Sun at Khao Kheow

PSC golf from The Outback Golf Bar

We had a few drop-outs today due to the weather but the intrepid 20 Outbackers who went to Khao Kheow (B & A) were pleasantly surprised as just before we teed-off the sun came out and there was no more rain until we were walking off the 18th green, and that was only a sprinkle.
Although it was heavy underfoot and sometimes finding a dry spot for the ball was a bit difficult but not insurmountable, we had some good scores in, particularly from Simon Spalding on one of his frequent visits from Australia with a few friends, who had 40 points off his 1 handicap (69 gross), a great round of golf mate, well done.
Most of us will spend the next day or so drying our gear out ready for Chiang Rai/Chiang Mai on Thursday and I have been told on good authority that Chiang Rai has not had the bad weather the rest of the kingdom has. I guess the proof of the pudding will be in the eating.
The condition of Khao Kheow is improving each day as some of the surrounds the green staff have been working on are now taking shape and starting to look a lot better.
There were five ‘2’s today: three on hole A5 from Steve Mann, Simon Spaulding & Bob Philp, and two on hole B8 from Alan Ansell & Chris Sloan

Div A (0–14)
1st Simon Spaulding (1/Hi0.9) 40
2nd Owen Walkley (11/Hi10.5) 37
3rd Bob Philp (8/Hi7.8) 30
Div B (15+)
1st Alan Ansell (24/Hi22.3) 34pts
2nd Fidge Button (17/Hi15.7) 32pts
3rd Tony Barnes (16/Hi15) 32pts
Tuesday, Oct. 11, Pattaya C.C. – Stableford

A small field of 11 players were quickly away on a rain drenched course, which considering the rain that has fallen recently, we were lucky to play at all, let alone get round the whole 18 holes.
Bob Green fought it out with Laong to nab her on count back as he sharpened his game ahead of Chiang Mai, taking the first spot with 37 points. Laong played well for her second place with the same score and Dave Earthrowl, who continues to hit the ball well, took third with 35.
There was just one ‘2’ on hole 5 from Dave Earthrowl, which he chipped in!

1st Bob Green (12/Hi13.4) 37pts
2nd Laong Gatepratum (28/Hi26.5) 37pts
3rd David Earthrowl (16/Hi17) 35pts
4th Jim Payne (25/Hi26) 35pts
Wednesday, Oct. 12, Burapha – Stableford

Out of a starting field of three divisions and 30 players on the A & B loops only 20 cards were returned after the heavy rain severely disrupted the tournament. Chris Sloan stood head and shoulders above most, returning a marvellous 40 points given the conditions and earned himself an immediate handicap cut down to 8.3.
Owen Walkley and Rod Crosswell also should be well satisfied with their 38’s and the three aforementioned were the only players to break par.
There were four ‘2’s from Jim Brackett, Keith Buchanan & Andy Butterworth on A3 and Peter Stonebridge on hole 6.

Div A (0–15)
1st Chris Sloan (12/9.1) 40pts
2nd Owen Walkley (13/Hi9.9) 38pts
3rd Dennis Pelly (14/Hi10.8) 35pts
Div B (16–18)
1st Rod Crosswell (17/Hi13.8) 38pts
2nd Keith Buchanan (18/Hi14.9) 33pts
3rd Murray Hart (16/Hi12.9) 32pts
Div C (19+)
1st Jesse Serna (39/Hi32.4) 34pts
2nd Ivan Plunkett (26/Hi21.8) 30pts
3rd Fidge Button (20/Hi15.8) 29pts
Note: The Outback Golf Bar is situated about 6km from Sukhumvit Road along Soi Siam Country. All are welcome to come and join us for a beer and a hit. Just call in and put your name down on the list or give Bob a call on 087 941 2474.

Wet courses, but we splash on

PSC Golf from Mulligans Lakeside

Thursday runner-up Chris Gee (right) shares a beer with Bruce.

Tuesday, Oct. 11, Eastern Star - Stableford
Eastern Star was the venue for our game on Tuesday, where on arrival we were met with a shower, which dampened the enthusiasm of some. The remaining golfers ventured out and shortly after teeing off on Hole 2 the rain abated, until we had to take cover for 20 minutes near Hole 14. The course was damp, so ‘lift clean & place’ was the order of the day.
We hadn’t played ES for a long time, a combination of reasons, including renovation of their greens (again), but with their current offer to the PSC we hope to be back.
The scores were not great, with 32 points from Jeff Wylie (6) leading the way, just ahead of Brian Maddox (20) with 31. Near Pins were shared by Ray, Mike & Jeff with 1 missed, for a Banglamung Boys Home donation.
Thursday, Oct. 13, Pattana - Stableford
Thursday was our monthly visit to Pattana, maybe the last visit for a while as they implement a High Season pricing policy which does not take into account the current economic conditions that prevail.
The course itself is still very good, however some of the infrastructure on it has been severely affected by the recent flooding. Again ‘lift, clean & place’ was implemented, which combined with some short tees made the course more playable, although the scores still were not great.
Jeff, with his consistent ball striking, led the way home again with 35 points from Chris Gee (21) with 32 points, while the technicals were shared equally between Jeff & the Banglamung Boys Home.
Note: Mulligans Lakeside plays golf on Tuesday & Thursday, with presentation at the course Tuesday & Mulligans Lakeside hosting on Thursdays. Call 089 094 1841 for scheduling or enquiries. Hope to see you there, cheers & good golfing!

Scribe takes the spoils

Phoenix Tuesday/Friday Golf Group

Tuesday’s top three pose for a photo with the staff at the Relax Bar.

Mike Gerrard
Tuesday, Oct. 11, Phoenix - Stableford
What a week it has been with horrendous storms covering most of the country. Normally around Phoenix we are spared by the surrounding mountains drawing the clouds away.
Last Friday we were interrupted twice before finishing just before dark. On Sunday we had a few players wanting to play and we were forced to give up after only four holes, so on Tuesday we made a decision to hold back paying for our golf until we were sure the weather was going to be O.K.
With our first tee time scheduled at 12.00 noon we made the decision to play at 11.30 a.m., as the sky looked reasonably clear. By 11.40 a.m. we had all paid our green fees etc. only for a huge storm to break out. The problem with this is that once you have paid there is no refund at Phoenix, even if you have not started. However, about 40 minutes later the storm abated and we set off in a light drizzle. What a stroke of luck. Not another drop of rain fell, although there were times when it looked like it would.
To be fair to the course, even after all the rain it has soaked up over the last couple of weeks, the drainage is superb and apart from a few areas where it is hard to clear the water the fairways and greens were superb.
After it was all over it turned out that yours truly (Mike Gerrard) managed to find a little bit of form and return a score of 38 points (gross 84) to win the day. In second place was Stuart Gordon, who scored 36 points (gross 80), and in third place was my playing partner on the day Eamon Murtagh with 33 points.
The KPK food voucher was awarded to Stuart Gordon and he will have fun spending this while the near pins went to Mark Manning, John Bartley, Clive Robinson and your correspondent.
Our hosts the Relax Bar donated the lucky draw prizes of a free beer and a free massage which went to Graham Drake & Tim Mason. The other lucky draw prize went to Denis Dixon. Nice to see him back after a long absence.
With the high season drawing ever nearer we are now getting to full capacity of 6 groups. Throughout the high season, non Phoenix members can enjoy playing golf with our group at a special green fee rate of only 1,000 baht on Friday’s and Tuesday’s, as a guest of the members.
If you want more information call me (Mike) on 087 091 7565.

Arnold sails home by seven

PSC golf from The Three Sisters Bar

There’s a good reason to begin your play early – today, Oct. 12, the Three Sisters group fielded 18 players at the Pattaya Country Club and most of the time the weather was pleasant and overcast with the sun shining for a brief 15 minutes. All players made it to Caddy Shack II before the skies opened up and dumped tons of rain.

Wednesday’s winner Arnold van de Graaf (left) with Paul Owens.

All the players enjoyed Herbie Ishinaga’s roast beef, w/Jalepeno peppers, and big dogs with real relish and had a moment of silence for the poor folks still on the course.

A tally of the cards showed Arnold van de Graaf, recently off the ship, coming in with a 43 points for top spot, followed by Paul Owens and Bill Thompson each having 36 points, with Paul taking second place on the count back. Several players were in a state of shock seeing who turned up at the bug.

Damp day doesn’t deter devotees

PSC golf from The Cafe Kronborg

The Drut
Monday, Oct. 10, Treasure Hill - Stableford
Under overcast skies, eleven golfers gathered at the Cafe’ Kronborg awaiting the Admiral’s now famous cry of “load ‘em up”, which indicates commencement of our festivities. The Admiral gave the call at 0815 hours.
It rained for a fair bit of the journey however upon arrival it had ceased and a great day’s golf ensued. New lockers in the change rooms and a green fee discount due to cored greens were welcomed by our group.
The skies were overcast however pleasant weather prevailed and the rain was in absentia. The first group teed off at 0937 hours and completed their journey in three hours and fifty five minutes.
The course though a little damp was in surprisingly good nick considering all the precipitation lately in the area and the greens despite being cored putted truly.
Prior to tee off Ken Bernek acknowledged that his short game was about as reliable as the Thai postal system and gaining a podium finish would be akin to him using a toothpick whilst wearing boxing gloves. Time would tell.
San Mig Stu Rifkin, who was an early withdrawal a few days prior, had commented “The more I play golf the more I like riding my motor cycle.”
To the people who withdrew on the day for whatever reason, your name has been entered in the Wusses Register for posterity.
We welcomed Niels Hansen and Jan Lovgreen from Denmark for their lengthy visits.
In the A flight Mike Gosden handed in thirty eight points for first place. Second was Martin Todd with thirty six points whilst Takeshi Hakozaki with thirty four was third.
In the B flight Alain Taddai scored thirty four points to top the podium whilst Brad Todd (SOM) with thirty two points finished second and the Danish dynamo Jan Lovgreen with thirty one points rounded it out.
A Flight (0–16)
1st Mike Gosden (10) 38pts
2nd Martin Todd (7) 36pts
3rd Takeshi Hakozaki (13) 34pts
B Flight (17+)
1st Alain Taddai (18) 34pts
2nd Brad Todd (25) 32pts
3rd Jan Lovgreen (21) 31pts
The Coveted Compass Cap went to Dave Richardson who was of the opinion he couldn’t sink a putt as his ball was afraid of the dark. Deefa once again was present to collect donations from the players and their efforts are much appreciated.
Ken Bernek’s comments re his short game were alas, true.
Drutnote – Melbourne is a very nice city when Collingwood get rolled.
Thursday, Oct. 13, Plutaluang –Stableford
Nineteen golfers assembled at the Cafe’ Kronborg wondering what would be presented in the way of a golf course in view of consistent rain over recent times. The course was a bit wet, however ok and the East and South nines were the flavour of the day.
With carts only on the motorway today the round was always going to be a bit slow and the first group completed the journey in four hours and fifty five minutes. The day was overcast and pleasant whilst the greens were extremely slow however true.
Prior to tee off Ken Bernek, who had eye surgery recently, advised he could set a course record however was not sure at which end. Takeshi Hakozaki indicated he was keen to improve on his last start effort as he had spotted spoors that not even the tree huggers or environmentalists were aware existed.
We welcomed Deng Ji (Ted) from Korea and Jerry Dobbs from Western Australia.
In the A flight Mike Allidi continued his great form to record thirty seven points (72 off the stick) to take first place from Ken Bernek on thirty five points, whilst Mike Gosden with thirty four points finished third and Jan Eriksen with thirty one points rounded it out.
In the B flight Brad Todd handed in a super forty three points to be a runaway winner. Brad enjoyed the par fives as his card showed on the East nine a six for three and a five for three. On the South nine he scored a four for five and a five for four. To put this in perspective one player had fifteen points for the entire journey.
In second place was Mick O’Connor with thirty one points holding off Mike Winfield on the same score whilst Jerry Dobbs with thirty points finished fourth.
A Flight (0-18)
1st Mike Allidi (1) 37pts
2nd Ken Bernek (16) 35pts
3rd Mike Gosden (10) 34pts
4th Jan Eriksen (14) 31pts
B Flight (19+)
1st Brad Todd (25) 43pts
2nd Mick O’Connor (22) 31pts
3rd Mike Winfield (21) 31pts
4th Jerry Dobbs (22) 30pts
The near pin on East 5 went to Mike Allidi and the long putt on South 9 saw Mike Gosden successful. The Coveted Compass Cap was won by Deng Ji (Ted) who commented that his game had all the finesse of a rhino on a substance found in a back alley some 150kms from the Disneyland for seniors.
Deefa was on hand to collect donations from the troops for distribution to the needy in Pattaya and they are thanked for their contributions.
Drutnote – One can only wonder what fate awaited the crab spotted on the green at the par three second, east nine.
