Attention city hall:
Road hazard needs fixing
Editor;
It seems it is useless to call city hall regarding
hazardous road conditions, so maybe putting it in writing will do some good.
On Soi Nernplabwan, about two (2) km east of Sukhumvit
Hwy, in front of the Blackbush Bar, there is a pothole that is growing daily
and in the past week alone there have been no less than five motorbikes who
have hit this pothole, especially during the rain when it is covered with
water. Luckily, only minor injuries to the riders, but in two cases the
riders were thrown into the oncoming lane. Fortunately there were no cars
coming and no one was killed, but it’s only a matter of time before it
happens.
I hope your newspaper is distributed to the powers that
be at city hall, and something can be done about this.

Pattaya
Vegetarianism
Editor;
I was taken aback when reading Bill Hunter’s accusation
of bias (PM 10/6) regarding Eric Bahrt’s letters on vegetarianism, since
they are invariably entirely factual. One is forced to the conclusion that
it was an attempt to hoodwink readers into dismissing support of
vegetarianism.
Eric did not claim that only vegetarians were talented;
he merely pointed out that vegetarianism and talent were not inconsistent.
Mr. Hunter’s claim that only one in a million are vegetarian is, of course,
absurd. Several hundred million live in India alone and there are more than
two million in the UK, not about seventy as Mr Hunter imagines!
There are a few people who have to eat meat, but they
tend to hunt healthy animals which is a far cry from those of us who support
a cruel industry which cultivates sick animals, pollutes the environment and
benefits the wealthy. Time for a change.

Meat eaters out number vegetarians
Editors:
Although I’ve read my share of wacko letters to the
editor, Bill Hunter’s (“In Response to Eric Bahrt”, June l0) should be
framed and put into the museum of Ripley’s Believe it or Not!
He writes meat-eaters out number vegetarians by a ratio
of millions to one. Wow! In America, for example, over 3% of Americans say
they are vegetarians while 10% say they are “near vegetarians”. How did a
ratio of 30 to 1 or 10 to 1 become a ratio of millions to 1?
I’m sure if Bill was alive in the l4th century he would
have laughed at the minority of people who said the world was round.
He also called vegetarians Eric’s “compatriots”.
Compatriots refers to people who come from the same country and it has
nothing to do with diet.

A giant step for humankind
Editor;
A Peruvian proverb states: “Little by little, one walks
far.”
My newscaster of choice is Sorayut Suthasana who always
asks penetrating questions that go beyond routine programmed responses. Last
week, expecting yet another stale self-serving politician to say what he or
she wants us to hear, I was delightfully surprised to inhale a breath of
fresh air during the life-affirming interview with Nitcharee Penekchanasak
and her loving parents. Nong Nunt lost both of her legs in a Singapore mass
transit accident, but she has lost none of her indomitable spirit and
contagious enthusiasm for life. Her glowing smile and sunny disposition have
served as a bright and shining example to those of us who give up too
easily, yielding to painful tragedy with self-indulgent pity. Holding it
together instead of falling apart - that’s true courageous strength of
character to keep going on, trying again tomorrow. Negative mindsets filled
with shame, guilt, grief and depression can only be reversed with a positive
energy commitment to plan, to believe, to act, to dream and to follow your
heart and gutsy savvy intuition.
An inspiration to one and all, this wise beyond her years
15-year-old is determined to serve as a positive role model, refusing to let
anyone tell her what she can’t do, intent on pursuing her personal dream to
help others as an enabling psychiatrist and supportive guidance counsellor.
Lessons to be learned from this delightfully sincere and open role model are
to choose to be a victor rather than a victim and to never, never, never
give up, content to be who you are, say what you feel and have the courage
to face the truth honestly and honourably, doing the right thing because it
is right.
Success is determined by a can do, will do spunky
attitude, taking calculated risks and doing what unsuccessful losers don’t
dare to even attempt. The only limits to overcoming challenges are
self-imposed. We must rely on our inner fortitude, focusing on successfully
winning by confronting fear, inspiring others to give more, hope more, dream
more, do more and become more.
