Guest speaker from Michelin provides careers guidance for students at St. Andrews International School
Mr. Walker, the plant manager from Michelin,
advises students to find a job in a field that they are passionate about.
Kevin McGee, Assistant
Head at St Andrews International School
As children grow up they are exposed to many different
factors which help them decide what type of job they would like to do in the
future. Children are influenced by their parents, teachers, friends,
television and the internet, as well as the environment that they live in.
At St. Andrews we are dedicated to making sure that our own students are
exposed to as many different careers as possible, and encourage them to
think about their future at an early age. We also want them to meet and
listen to successful role models.
At St Andrews School we have two career programmes: the first is our Work
Experience Programme for Year 10 students, the second is our Guest Speakers
Programme. The aim of our Guest Speakers Programme is to introduce students
in Years 9, 10 and 11 to business people from our community so that they can
listen and learn from them, and find out what it takes to have a successful
career.
Our first guest speaker this year was Mr. Nick Walker, who has two children
at St Andrews. Mr. Walker is the plant manager for Michelin in Laem Chabang.
He gave our students a detailed and informative explanation of his past and
made them aware of the steps he had taken to get to his current senior
position. He also gave our students a valuable insight into the different
departments such as research, technology, human resources, etc., that make
up a successful company.
Additionally, Mr. Walker focused some of his presentation on the changing
state of the world and how rapidly technological advancements are being
made. He also introduced students to the increasing importance of the
growing markets of both India and China.
To sum up his talk Mr. Walker considered the question: “What advice can you
give a student about their future career paths?” His answer was two-fold; to
try and find a job in an area that you are good at and secondly that you are
passionate about. If you could combine those aspects then you are likely to
be happy and successful.
We really appreciated Mr. Walker visiting our school and giving up his time
to talk to our students - it was an extremely worthwhile experience.
At St Andrews we will be continuing to invite guest speakers into school to
provide an insight into possible careers for our students. Please contact
Kevin McGee at [email protected] if you would be interested in
being a guest speaker.

NBA players coach at Regent’s
The
players in training.
Andrew Chambers
The Regent’s School Pattaya has been host to some giants
of the sporting world. Two former NBA professional basketball players have
been running a basketball camp for students this week.
Michael Moten, who stands 6 feet 7 inches tall (2m 4 cm),
has played professionally in America, Europe and Asia, and has spent the
past few days passing on his skills to the students at school. Their
organization, For the Love of Basketball, aims to inspire children in
Thailand to play one of the fastest growing sports in the world.
The students are in awe of the
NBA players at the Regent’s.
Scott Hansen in Year 9 is one of the lucky students to
have benefited. “It’s a once in a lifetime experience,” he says.
With the pupils learning about dribbling, game tactics and shooting
technique from the experts, we will be hoping for great things from our
basketball teams next year!

Fourteen people, mostly teacher assistants and canteen staff,
participated in the seminar in preparation for the opening of the
self-running canteen on 18th of this month. Bussaba, the school
administrative manager, said that it is essential for each participant
to be trained on receiving appropriate management and directions in food
hygiene to enable them to prepare food safely in school and at home.
Topics like types/sources of bacteria, personal hygiene, common symptoms
of food-borne illness, preventing cross contamination, and hygienic food
handling are a few of the subjects that the participants truly enjoyed
learning, enhanced by games and ice-breakers.
The assessment towards the end proved to be an exciting yet challenging
part for them as well.
“Let’s see how long before you can make it
to the end.” Karn (left), Taew (middle) & Weaw.
At the end of the day, they all had one common thing to say, “Sanuk mak

Installing water filtration systems in schools
Pattaya Sports Club Charity Update
Before…
A clean bill of health is the right of everyone on
the planet and that is the reason Pattaya Sports Club members are happy
to install water filtration systems in schools. 5 years ago the PSC made
a donation to Mabprachan School to install a filter system to provide
clean drinking water. This has proved very popular with the children.
…And
after
Discipline, in its gentlest form, is very important,
particularly for children for it instills a routine at an early age.
Most schools endeavour to impress upon their students the importance of
cleaning their teeth and washing their hands after every meal, but that
only applies to lunch in the schools, before continuing their lessons.
But, as you can see from the photographs, facilities for washing hands
and teeth were somewhat limited. But it is not difficult to make changes
as you can be see for it reveals the situation as it is now. With the
help of Ray at Mulligan’s who knew some local builders, and funds from
Pattaya Sports Club, the old taps were removed and a new enlarged
facility was built.
With 12 taps now available, there are no excuses for the children not to
clean their teeth and hands after lunch.

Regent’s Secondary Student Guild achieves Bronze Sponsorship of Jester’s Fair
Vanessa receives the certificate for bronze sponsorship from Woody.
By Paul Crouch
Another academic year draws to an end and the
Regent’s Pattaya Secondary Student Guild, ably led by the chairperson,
Vanessa, and her executives, has had a very productive year. Every
week’s meeting and agenda have been full of proactive items that have
not only been discussed and reviewed but actioned through a very
effective body of students. The Guild has been responsible for social
events at Halloween, Valentine’s and the recent Pattaya to Peru
Challenge. They have raised large amounts of funds to support
environmental initiatives, Round Square major projects and to sponsor
our very own Burma Freedom Group and the local Blind School project with
the Father Ray Foundation.
One community event that the Guild always likes to support is the
Jester’s Care for Kids Charity Drive that happens in Pattaya, at Diana
Driving Range, every year in September. For the 9th year in a row now,
the Guild have become Bronze sponsors of this hugely successful event,
and welcomed Mr. Underwood to attend one of their final meetings of the
year to present the money. Woody talked about the aims of the Charity
Drive and how support from the Regent’s School Pattaya is very important
as it not only provides financial support but also creates partnerships
for interaction and learning.
This year the Regent’s stall at the Jester’s Fair will have a different
angle as Goldfish PLC, the school’s very active business enterprise
group, will be coordinating and running the stall on the day. Look out
for some interesting activities and initiatives on the 11th September!
