Fireworks money should be put to better use

Editor;

I live in View Talay 2B in Jomtien and for the past 4-5 nights have really enjoyed the extravagant fireworks displays from Bali Hai. They must have cost many, many thousands of baht!

Have they really been enough to attract and encourage many tourists to visit Pattaya/Jomtien in the future?

Currently in front of View Talay 2 there is a giant ditch digger, lots of pipes, lots of mud and piles of dirt. Expats and tourists are picking their way through this mess, dodging cars, baht buses and motorbikes.

This whole fiasco has been a work in progress, or should I say NO progress for the past few years. Thappraya Road is the artery to Jomtien from Pattaya. I understand the original funds for this project somehow disappeared some time ago. So next to nothing of substance has been accomplished since then.

Wouldn’t it have been better to pour the millions of baht invested in the fireworks to complete the many still unfinished infrastructure projects (I can’t name them all there are too many) so that the tourists who come here and the expats who live here do not have to endure the constant travel delays, congestion and hassle of this never ending construction problem all over the city?

On top of Thappraya, the other main disaster is the half finished parallel road to Jomtien Beach Road. This disaster is in the face of everyone who has to visit Immigration on Soi 5, which is most of us.

I know some of these events are the way of life here, that we shrug off and continue to enjoy “the Thai way” of life, but when I see thousands of fireworks exploding in a matter of minutes, it seems tragic that we can’t put that money to a much better use. It’s even worse than the pedestrian crossing fiasco!

Thanks for reading, maybe next year we can cut the whole thing down to one big blast New Years Eve.

It was on a dark and smoky day

Dear Editor,

Yesterday I went for a walk at the fitness park on Pratamnak Hill. After 200 meters along the slope a heavy smoke hit me and other walkers and joggers. We covered our noses and ran out of the smoke filled area. I looked back and saw two men burning leaves and branches of the trees. I don’t know if burnt trees are toxic or not, but our eyes and noses stung badly and the odor was bad.

As it was very windy and dry, I also got concerned about the spread of the fire, so I called Pattaya Call Center.

I: “There’s a huge branch burning on fitness park and the smoke is disturbing the joggers and the wind is very strong right now, I’m concerned about the fire spreading.”

Girl: “Yes, Ma’am, at the moment, it’s still burning.”

I: “Oh thank you for telling me what I’m telling you. My call is for you to report to a concerned department.”

Girl: “I will ask my supervisor.”

I: “Just ask? Could you give me the tourist police number please?”

Girl: “Sure Ma’am.”

She gave me a wrong number, a young child answered and giggled. I called the call center again and another girl gave me a different number this time.

Tourist Police: “This is Lt. Blah blah blah…”

I: “Hello sir, I want to report a wood burning on the fitness hill.”

TP: Where is that?

I: “Fitness park right opposite your office, sir.”

TP: “I don’t see anything.”

(I to self, “If you’d get off you butt and look out the window you might see a very heavy smoke blowing over the hill like a house is on fire.”)

I: “The smoking hill just outside your door, sir.”

TP with a pleasant voice: “Well I’m not the fire department, I don’t have a hose to extinguish the fire, you’ll have to call the Call Center.”

I: “I just did and the girl there said she would ask someone, but I just thought that you are right there and should be aware of the situation and maybe liaise with the right person? The joggers, adults and children alike are coughing, the weather is dry and the wind is strong, the fire could spread...”

TP: “You’ll need to call the city call center, ma’am.”

I: “Ok, thank you so very much for you kind help.”

On my second lap to the same location about 20 minutes later, the fire stopped, and the two burners were gone. Not sure if the TP handled it, the Call Center handled it, or the burners just saw my camera and stopped burning. No further comments.

More post office woes

Editor;

I was already thinking about writing a letter before I read PJN’s complaint against Na Jomtien’s new post office. In November my friends and parents from Holland sent two registered envelopes. One containing important documents for myself and another with Sinterklaas and Christmas presents for my daughter, their only grandchild. They never arrived... Needless to say, a big disappointment for the little girl.

I, too, have never had any major problems in the Naklua post office. I’m not going to be finger pointing yet but, my contacts are tracking down the numbers from the envelopes as we speak.

Best wishes,
Chris

PILC and Jesters host Carols and Canapés

Rick and Harpic Bryant (center) lead the singing at the PILC and Jesters’ Carols and Canapés evening at Lakeside Restaurant, Mabprachan.

On 23rd December, the Pattaya International Ladies Club (PILC) and Jesters Care for Kids Charity joined up to host Carols and Canapés at Lakeside Restaurant, Mabprachan. Tables and chairs were set out on the front terrace overlooking the lake and were soon occupied by more than 70 men, women and children ready to carol the night away.

Rick and Harpic Bryant were available to lead the singing; Roddy was there with his trumpet and thanks must go to the choristers who stood and sung.

Steve, the owner of Lakeside Restaurant, served the crowds with a plethora of sausage rolls, mini samosas and more and Bea baked hundreds of mini mince pies. The entrance fee of 100 baht also included a glass of mulled wine, prepared by Debbie from Jesters, so it was truly a joint event.

Steve is donating 50 baht of each drink sold to the PILC and Jesters (results will be announced), and 8000 baht in entrance fees and mince pie sales was collected on the evening. Great evening, next year will be bigger and better!

Steal and have a great time in Thailand

Editor;

What is the matter with people? It’s time to wake up! I read in the paper that a Russian thief was caught but because he eventually paid for the goods he was released without charge!

This is crazy; the thief can then carry on doing what he likes doing best until he gets caught again and “hey presto” he pays for the goods and walks away without charge.

So he maybe steals twenty items and only has to pay for one or two?

This is ideal for him because he can make a lot of profit, but for a lot of hard working people it could be a total disaster, even the “last straw” for some poor local business.

When a thief is caught he/she should be charged and dealt with, even if released for a first offense and the goods paid for they should at least get a criminal record so that if they continue to commit crime they can then be dealt with more severely when caught again.

As for foreigners stealing, why not charge and deal with them and then deport them immediately; clearly they are not wanted here.

If this was done then they would not be allowed back into Thailand with their record to commit more crime in the future.

It seems that if the Thailand authorities do not wake up and do something very soon it will end up like a lot of foreign “do gooder” countries that are in a real mess like the U.S.A. or the U.K. when it comes to dealing with those poor offenders who have had a hard life (sob, sob).
