Last minute heartache for United as Kerdkul hits winner

Staff Reporters

A goal in the 90th minute from Bangkok United’s Wutthipong Kerdkul condemned Pattaya United to their second consecutive home defeat in the space of seven days at the Nongprue Stadium last weekend.

Coming off the back of their disappointing reversal to Thai Port the previous week, Pattaya would have been expecting to complete a relatively comfortable and moral boosting victory over the league’s bottom team. Indeed, Bangkok United had won only four games in total prior to last Sunday and looked all but certain to finish in the relegation zone this season.

Despite the disparity in league positions and relative form, it was the visitors who took an early lead in the game when their French striker Maxime Ongmakon latched onto a through ball from Sarif Sainui to slide the ball past Narit in the Pattaya goal from 8 yards out and put his side one up after only five minutes.

Their lead did not last long however and Pattaya were able to draw level on the quarter hour mark. Ludovik’s speculative 20 yard left foot shot was initially palmed away by Bangkok goalkeeper Weera Koedpudsa but from the resultant corner kick the ball was fed back across goal by Sompob Nilwong and United’s Cameroonian striker made no mistake with his second effort, calmly volleying the ball past a wall of defenders and into the net.

With the scores level the game opened out and both teams created good chances at either end, the best of these falling to Bangkok United forward Kerdkul who played a neat one-two with Maxime but volleyed the return over the bar when it seemed easier to score.

Pattaya keeper Narit was also called on to make a smart save in the 30th minute from Fofana Abib as the visitors applied some pressure to the Dolphins goal.

At the other end of the field Ludovik nearly connected with a long through ball that would have left him clean through on goal and Somchai Singmanee had a great effort that flew just over the bar on the stroke of half time.

In contrast to the entertaining opening 45 minutes the second half was relatively devoid of any noteworthy goalmouth action as both teams seemed to run out of gas. Pattaya eventually introduced Tana Chanabut into the action in the 70th minute with most fans still wondering what this player has to do to get a start in a game. Chanabut’s energy and quick feet nearly carved out an opening for the Dolphins in the 75th minute as he skipped to the byline before cutting back a cross to the far post were Ludovik saw his fierce volley well saved by Koedpudsa.

As the clocked ticked down towards full time Pattaya found themselves wide open to the sucker punch as Kerdkul exchanged passes with Kittisak Siriwan on the edge of the Dolphins area to beat the offside trap before rolling the ball past Narit and into the empty net, with United defender Arlindo just unable to get back in time to make a clearance.

It was a huge body blow to the home team, coming as it did so late in the game but they very nearly managed to grab an equalizer in the dying seconds as Nilwong fired over the bar when well placed on the edge of the Bangkok area.

The final whistle came as a huge relief to the travelling Bangkok fans as they know that the three points still leaves their team clinging onto a Premier League place by their fingertips.

For the Dolphins it was yet another disappointing result and performance, particularly in the second half, in what is fast becoming a disastrous run-in to the season. From being in a position to challenge for a fourth place spot not too long ago, they have now dropped down to seventh in the league and are in desperate need of some points from their final two matches to hold off the challenge of rapidly improving Osotspa M150.

United play their penultimate home game this coming Saturday against BEC Tero at the Nongprue Stadium. Kick-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.

Sriracha FC back in the big time

The Sriracha FC team line-up to take on Air Force United
at the Sriracha Stadium, September 29.

Theerarak Suthathiwong

Eastern Seaboard outfit Sriracha FC have gained promotion back to the Thai Premier League at their first attempt, the “Blue Marlins” sealing their top flight status for next season with a 1-1 draw against rival promotion seekers Air Force United on September 29 at the Sriracha Stadium.

On October 8 the club was able to celebrate going up as champions as they demolished RBAC FC 5-1 to leave them seven points clear of their nearest rivals with just 2 matches left to play.

It’s a remarkable turnaround for Sriracha who endured a miserable time in the Thai Premier League last season and have emerged this year as a different force.

With the promise of strong financial backing for next season in the top flight, it’s looking like we will have three teams on the Eastern Seaboard challenging for honours in the not too distant future. Well done the Marlins!

FC Nova go nap against I-play

MBMG Bangkok Casuals League Div 2

FC Nova line up for a team photo prior to their match against I-play.

FC Nova got there Division 2 campaign off to a flying start when they thumped 17 goals passed a hapless I-play side in Bangkok. The home side did not help matters by starting the game with only 9 players and although by half time they had got on even terms in the form of players, the score line was certainly not even as the Pattaya based side led 8-1.

Bjorn Ellingson opened the scoring when he powered a header home from a Patrik Schlageter corner and the rest of the half was all one way traffic. Lee Homer added a couple, before the ever dependable Paul Derbyshire opened his goalscoring campaign with a 30 yard screamer.

In truth FC Nova had not played that well in the first half, at times there passing was poor as they looked to play the killer ball much to often instead of keeping it simple and making the numerical player advantage tell.

After a few tactical changes from manager Stuart Levy, FC Nova started the second half much better. Most of there best play came down the right flank with full back Mark Hill overlapping to great effect. The floodgates soon opened as Derbyshire completed his hat-trick and there were further goals from Ellingson and Schlageter, before left back Mark Dorey got in on the action with a brace. Nicholas Creasey rattled the crossbar before firing home and Thai Nick also completed his hat-trick.

There was an impressive debut from 17 year old Ben, with his positive running down the right flank while Stuart Cowie looks a good acquisition to the squad.

After the match the players travelled back to Pattaya to celebrate in usual style at Jamesons Irish Bar.

FC Nova know they cannot get complacent and write to much in to this result. But the early signs look good with coach Levy having assembled a strong looking squad for the 2010/11 campaign. They will surely face a much sterner test when they travel up to Bangkok again this coming week to take on BSL Youth.

Leicester City hold training camp in Pattaya

Former England coach Sven-Göran Eriksson, the newly appointed manager of Leicester City Football Club, left, puts his new charges through their paces at the Nongprue Stadium in Pattaya.

Ariyawat Nuamsawat

English Championship team Leicester City paid a visit to the Eastern Seaboard last week to prepare for their match against the Thai National team at the Supachalasai Stadium in Bangkok on Saturday October 9.

The Foxes, owned by Thai duty free retail King Power Group, set up camp at the Pullman Pattaya Aisawan resort in Wongamat and conducted their training under the watchful eye of new coach Sven-Göran Eriksson at Pattaya United’s Nongprue Stadium. The players did some light workouts as they struggled to come to terms with the hot weather here in Thailand but Eriksson, who was only appointed last week, said the players and staff were delighted with the warm welcome and hospitality they had received here in Pattaya.

The time to relax in the coastal resort obviously worked wonders for the Foxes as they were able to overcome their Thai hosts 2-0 last Saturday with first half goals from Martyn Waghorn and Paul Gallagher proving the difference between the sides. The Thai team consisted of a mixture of full international and under 23 players as coach Bryan Robson tries to work out his best eleven for the Suzuki Cup taking place in December.

Pattaya Mayor Ittipol Khunplome hands the Keys of the City to Sven-Göran Eriksson and the Leicester City Football team at the Pullman Pattaya Aisawan hotel in the presence of Vichai Raksriaksorn of King Power Group, owner of the club, to thank them for choosing Pattaya as the base for their training sessions.

All kitted out with help from the PSC

The youngsters show off their new volleyball kit donated by the Pattaya Sports Club. PSC Charity Chairman, William Macey, third left rear, is not a current playing member of the squad.

Pattaya Sports Club (PSC) not only donates funds to the handicapped and underprivileged but derives great pleasure to promote sport in the area. When we mention sports, we are obviously referring, mainly, to the younger generation for most of us are a little long in the tooth to engage in anything too energetic.

PSC were introduced to a group of boys at school No. 7 by Khun Nittiya of the YWCA for they have put together a volleyball team who, they hope, will become champions of Chonburi and perhaps more.

The shorts embossed with the PSC logo.

Success does not come easily in sport and the trainer, Khun Sam who was a well known volleyball player in Thailand, makes sure the boys train hard to achieve their ambitions. They have an exhausting schedule in addition to their daily studies. They are awake at 5 a.m. every morning to go running around the track and hone their skills on the court at 5.30 p.m. every evening. It was once said that you only get out what you put in, in which case the boys are on their way.

Watching sport on TV, it is obvious to everyone that the teams look professional and this, in some ways, helps their performance. Pattaya Sports Club were asked to provide their kit which, as you can see in the photos, includes trainers and protection for the knees and elbows which we were only too pleased to do. Let us hope that they are successful in their quest to become champions.

Edwards back on top at Bangpra

PSC Golf from Mulligans Lakeside

Tuesday, Oct. 5, Phoenix - Stableford

Tuesday we had a scheduled trip to Phoenix before they re-introduced their High Season rates, but it was not to be. Mother Nature stepped in with all night rain continuing on pretty much all day, so cancellation of the golf was our only option.

Thursday, Oct. 7, Bangpra - Stableford

Thursday was much more successful, with the rain holding off until we had finished our round at Bangpra. With the recent rains, ‘lift clean & place’ was the order of the day (I dread to think what the scores may have been without, considerably worse, for sure).

Thursday winner Dave Edwardsm right, with Mulligans’ staff member Pak.

Dave Edwards (17) made his first trip to the podium since his return last week, with a solid 34 points around a course that was playing pretty tough. Second spot for the day went to Jim Bell (21) with 33 points, despite some missed opportunities, but that’s golf.

Near Pins were shared between Dave and Graham with 2 each. It was good to see Graham’s son, Justin, join us for the day, on his way down towards Australia on an extended holiday.

Note: Mulligans Lakeside plays golf generally on Tuesday & Thursday (we sometimes change to accommodate a Thai Holiday). Presentations are made at the course on Tuesday, with Mulligans Lakeside hosting the Thursday presentation. For more details on scheduling etc, please call Jeff 089 094 1841 or Ray 081 935 8088. Hope to see you there, Cheers & Good Golfing!

Armstrong takes count-back win at Green Valley

PSC golf from The Caddy Shack

Friday, Oct. 8, Green Valley – Stableford

With no golf outing on Wednesday, this was our only trip of the week to play a stableford comp over the A & B Nines at Green Valley.

Arch Armstrong & Ben Findon.

With all the rain during the week the course was playing long (6,309 yard) off the white tees and we employed the ‘pick, clean & place’ ruling to make things a little fairer.

A group of eighteen players were up for the challenge today and coming out at the head of the bunch in the A Flight was Arch Armstrong, just pipping Vincent Smyth for top spot on count-back after both came in with 37 points each. Paul Smith took the final podium place in the top flight just one point further back.

Scores were slightly lower in the B Flight with Ben Findon taking the day’s honours on 35 points ahead of Brian Orr in second and Ian Covill in third.

Vincent Smyth, Ian Colvill and Brian Orr all recorded birdie ‘2’s and Vincent also picked up a near pin along with Graham Beaumont (2) and Greg Ritchie.

A Flight
1st Arch Armstrong (8) 37pts
2nd Vincent Smyth (10) 37pts
3rd Paul Smith (3) 36pts
B Flight
1st Ben Findon (19) 35pts
2nd Brian Orr (14) 33pts
3rd Ian Covill (14) 32pts

Note: The Caddy Shack is situated in Soi 8 Threppasit (follow the soi to the well appointed old English style hotel/restaurant/bar). We play golf twice a week, Wednesday and Friday until the punters return then Monday will also be added. We can also arrange golf outside these days and have a notice board with future venues and an entry list. Email [email protected] for more information.

Cotton breezes round damp Khao Kheow

PSC golf from Tropical Bert’s

Derek Brook

Tuesday, Oct. 5, Khao Kheow B & C – Stableford

As I got out of bed the phone started ringing, “Are we playing today?” was the call, then it rang again, and looking outside it was pouring it down. “Of course”, I said, and hoped I was correct.

Tom Cotton, left, with Mashi Kaneata, right and Tom’s lady playing the part of the rose.

At Bert’s as the rain came down and bedraggled players came in, it was obvious that some were missing -oh yeah of little faith. A call to the club assured us that it was not raining but after the wet weather of recent days the carts were allowed on the paths only. So those left slipped into cars and nipped up to K.K.

Driving up it was raining cats and dogs in places, but as we got closer the rain slowed and when we reached the deluge had stopped. Would this be our lucky day? Well we were soon changed and onto the first tee under dull skies, then off we went.

It never rained all the way around, the weather was superb and nice and cool. Mind the course was wet underfoot and at times it was difficult to find a place to put the ball when casual water came into play. The greens however were in fine condition, and were fast and true. So all in all a great walk around, probably improved by the fact that as soon as we finished it started to rain. Lucky, lucky Farangs!

On the way back it poured it down and when we got to Bert’s we found it had been wet around the home ranch. How sad! A couple of the brave souls who had cried off looked in to see how we had got on and were really pleased they had not been with us. Yeah.

So to the winners and the names sound familiar: winning with 37 points was Tom Cotton who had 24 points on the back nine and feared no count-back. In second was Mashi Kenata with 36 points on count-back over yours truly. Mashi is also good on count-backs!

Then it was time for Happy Hour, and why not? T.T.F.N.

Rifkin edges Todd on count-back

PSC golf from Café Kronborg

San Mig Stu

Monday, Oct. 4, Pattana – Stableford

Perhaps the weather put some people off as only 22 golfers hit the starters block from the listed 27 on today’s sheet. Only one golfer had a reasonable excuse, Graham Buckingham offered his apologies due to a rather unique double injury sustained curiously enough at this same course the previous Friday. Apparently during one of his Tee shots he hurt his wrist and at the same time injured his ankle when the club head came in contact with same! We trust you can recover soon Graham.

Monday flight winners Mike Winfield and Stu Rifkin with ‘The Admiral’.

The first group teed off the yellow markers at 09.45 a.m., beginning on the A nine and finished their round in four hours and five minutes including a couple of drink stops. This was despite constant drizzle on the homeward B nine.

Golf carts were not allowed off the concrete paths as the course had sustained a lot of rain over the past few days and nights. Winter rules applied for the day with relief through the greens taken aboard by all.

Mike Gosden.

Given the wet conditions it was understandable that only two golfers managed better than par. Martin Todd and Stu Rifkin fought out the A flight title with Martin losing to Stu on a count-back, both with 37 points. Third was Kike (er sorry) Mike Gosden with 35 points followed by Niels Hansen in fourth spot on 34 points.

B flight saw Mike Winfield snatch outright first on a count-back from last outing’s winner Walter Baechli with joint 34’s. Ken Bernek bounced back from Compass Cap territory to third spot with 33 points and Elias Magnusson picked up fourth for 31 points.

There were Welcome backs issued to Danes, Niels Hansen and Jan Lovgreen, Harry Wszola from Cairns, Australia and Martyn Topham of Vancouver, Canada.

Mike Winfield.

Andy Makara was today’s Compass Cap award winner but unfortunately Andy had to leave early and was unable to stay for presentations as he was whisked away by his co golfer who brought him to the course. Don’t fret Andy as the Cap presenter will see you for your much needed donation next time out. This year’s Compass Cap charity bin currently stands at 5,040 baht.

A Flight (0-15)
1st Stuart Rifkin (14) 37pts
2nd Martin Todd (8) 37pts
3rd Mike Gosden (11) 35pts
4th Niels Hansen (15) 34pts
B Flight (16+)
1st Mike Winfield (20) 34pts
2nd Walter Baechli (17) 34pts
3rd Ken Bernek (19) 33pts
4th Elias Magnussen (18) 31pts

: A9: Niels Hansen, B9: Ted Morris
Wednesday, Oct. 6, Treasure Hills – Stableford

Nineteen of twenty-two signed up golfers made it to the course today after two cancelled and one was a no show. It has to be stressed that late cancellations and no shows can and do make it unfair for the other golfers, as pre booked bus numbers make up the tally for the bus fees. So to those who decide on the morning of play that they should have headed home earlier the previous night, remember that you are not making any friends!

Anyway, we arrived at the Treasure Hills course and were surprised not to be welcomed at the entrance hut by the customary guards. It soon became apparent why, as we noticed that the guards hut was a burnt-out piece of rubble! We were no wiser, prior to leaving the course, what had caused the fire although there was a comment overheard along the lines of “fell asleep smoking”.

The first group teed off within half an hour of our arrival and they were fortunate to complete their round in 4hours and 20 minutes, without getting wet. The second group also made it back to the club house in time but the rest of the field got hammered again, as they did at this same course last week!

To say that the course was heavy going was a bit of an understatement, and with the additional rain it would probably be wise to close the course for a while until conditions improve. Only one golfer proved capable of handling the soggy layout and A flight’s Mike Gosden with 36 points was that man. Second in A flight was Les Hall with a commendable 35 points followed by Martin Todd winning third spot on a count-back from Owen Walkley with 32 points in fourth.

B Flight saw Mike Winfield again in the number one position with 33 points on a count-back from Wayne Koch, followed by Ken Bernek 32 points and Dave (The Admiral) Richardson fourth on 28 points.

Andy Makara showed he dislikes playing in the wet as he again cheerfully donated some funds to the Compass Cap cause which now totals 5140 baht. Thanks Andy.

After the Admiral had completed presentations he handed over the microphone to “The Drut” Mike Gosden, who introduced “The Dog” to all and sundry. The Dog is actually a fluffy replica of some mutt which happens to have a money slot in its back (no, not back side…along its spine!). A number of players were soon fully aware of the purpose for this four legged mammal as they were “bitten” for such infringements as “Accidental loss of grip of a club”, “Signing a card in an incorrect spot”, or simply for being on the winner’s podium! All people bitten by the dog were fined 5 baht and the intention is to encourage more people to be bitten so that the charity bin, which is growing via the Compass Cap award, will grow steadily bigger.

All golfers are encouraged to dob a mate in to The Drut (tell tales on your fellow golfer) with any story which will give the dog reason to “bite for bahts” at presentation times. It was pleasing to see that everyone took the spirit of the occasion’s initial announcement with much enthusiasm.

A Flight (0-18)
1st Mike Gosden (11) 36pts
2nd Les Hall (17) 35pts
3rd Martin Todd (8) 32pts
4th Owen Walkley (15) 32pts
B Flight (19+)
1st Mike Winfield (20) 33pts
2nd Wayne Koch (22) 33pts
3rd Ken Bernek (19) 32pts
4th Dave Richardson (25) 28pts

Greenaway posts top score at Kabinburi

IPGC golf from The Golf Club

Monday, Oct. 4, Green Valley - Stableford
1st Jeff Cordeiro (10) 39pts
2nd Roger Koehler (24) 35 pts B6-14
3rd Terry Wagner (18) 35 pts B6-13
4th Dr.John Exall (18) 33 pts

The start to a busy week of golf began at the waterlogged Green Valley course where days of rain had made the course very sloppy underfoot.

Jeff Cordeiro proved to be the best ‘mudder’ in the group, posting a fine 39 points for the win. We welcomed back Roger Koehler from the USA and he answered with a 35 point outing for second, 21 on the back and splashed by Terry Wagner on count-back. Dr. John swam in with 33 points to grab fourth place.

Tuesday, Oct. 5, Kabinburi Sports Club – Stableford

What a great turn out we had for our inaugural trip to Kabinburi. 28 golfers headed up the 331 eagerly anticipating the Kantary Hotel and 2 rounds of golf at the Kabinburi Sports Club. We were not disappointed!

The Breezer Brigade in the van were directed by McHugh’s GPS and we were awestruck when we pulled into the Kantary Hotel. This only heightened what we were expecting at the golf course a 10 minute drive up the road. Again, we were pleasantly surprised.

There were some impressive scores as the majority of us had not seen this layout before. The rough was the equalizer. Points were available if you kept it on the wonderfully manicured fairways and the Greens were massive and in great shape. Greg Ritchie was best dressed today but had a legitimate challenge from Mick Beresford.

A Flight (0–13)
1st Mark Reid (10) 39pts
2nd Gary Ritchie (5) 36 pts
3rd Yui Beitry (13) 36 pts
B Flight (14+)
1st Robbie Bennett (19) 36pts
2nd Greg Ritchie (18) 34pts
3rd Keith Worboys (15) 34pts

Wednesday, Oct. 6, Kabinburi Sports Club – Stableford

Day 2 started for some where they left off and not so well for others. The Red Wine Brigade didn’t figure in the fixture today but seemed to be having the most fun in the restaurant the night before. Heavy rain throughout the night didn’t seem to dampen the course or the spirits of our top performers.

We will definitely be going back to these fine facilities in the future. A special thanks to Robbie and Mon Bennett for their efforts in getting this trip organized and Greg Ritchie for sharing this hidden gem with us. Thanks everyone!

A Flight (0–13)
1st Paul Greenaway (9) 40pts
2nd John McHugh (7) 38pts
3rd Francis Goyons (5) 38pts
B Flight (14+)
1st Keith Worboys (15) 33pts
2nd Tom Balch (26) 33pts
3rd Bernie Stafford (14) 32pts

Friday, Oct. 8, Treasure Hills – Stableford
1st John Bahng (14) 37pts
2nd Terry Wagner (18) 34pts
3rd Roger Cross (26) 34pts

Today ended a busy week for us at The Golf Club. 16 players today set out on this always challenging course. Unfortunately we had a few temporary tees and even one temp green. None-the-less, we had an interesting day.

Long John Bahng took the day with 37 points - keeping the ball in play off the tee was the secret to his success. Terry Wagner ended the week where he began, in the money again, with 34 points, beating Roger Cross on count-back.

Looking forward to trying here again in a few months time.

Russell Exley in fine form

IPGC golf from The Haven

Monday, Oct. 4, Phoenix (White tees) - Stableford
CSS 72
1st Russell Exley (7) 39pts
2nd Rodney Hayes (8) 36pts
3rd Alan Pilkington (11) 36pts
4th Rod Howett (25) 35pts
5th Grant Cadell (15) 34pts

Even with the management allowing golf carts on the course, the conditions determined that again the ball would be lifted and placed in the fairways as the amount of mud collected by the ball was enough to require cleaning almost every time to ascertain the owner of it, but otherwise the general tees, greens and rough were in excellent shape considering the recent heavy rains in the area.

Russell Exley.

Russell Exley warmed up for the IPGC Monthly Medal with a solid round that include a couple of holes that could have been better but still easily ran out the winner ahead of a very competitive group out of The Haven with many a single figure handicapper in the field.

Rodney Hayes took second place with a better count-back of 19 to consign Alan Pilkington to third as he could only manage 17 points over the back nine.

Rod Howett slipped into fourth place by a single shot in front of Grant Cadell in fifth.

Trevor Schirmer.

Paul Hartley picked up the only 2 in the second division to sweep the pool that included a nice rollover, and in the first division Rodney Hayes and Russell Exley split the pot between them with one each.

Before presenting the prizes The Doc welcomed new members Domingo Soto and Joey Thomas and also welcomed back Yasuo Suzuki, Martin Hartley and Tony O’Neil. There was also a sad farewell for Rodney Hayes who is returning to Sydney where he is looking forward to playing off his Australian handicap which is four (4) shots higher at 12 point something and hoping to win even more than he did during his lucrative stay in Pattaya. The announcement was followed by wildly prolonged clapping and cheering from the masses.

Friday, Oct. 8, Green Valley - Stableford
CSS71
1st Trevor Schirmer (13) 36pts
2nd Alan Pilkington (11) 35pts
3rd Russell Exley (7) 35pts
4th Rick Holmes (11) 35pts
5th Marty Rock (11) 34pts cb 16
6th John Harris (16) 34pts

After an extremely subdued round in the IPGC Monthly Medal, Trevor Schirmer played very steadily to garner 36 points and just take the top spot ahead of a very competitive field over a soggy but playable Green Valley course that had suffered severely in the days preceding the tournament, having been drenched continually with heavy down pours making it yet another day on preferred lies.

Following Rodney Hayes departure, Alan Pilkington moved up a spot on the podium into second place as he led in a group in on one over handicap with a better count-back of 18 to Russell Exley’s 17 in third, and Rick Holmes on 16 in fourth place.

There were no 2’s in the second division but Rick Holmes had one and Al Keith had two in the first division.

Back at The Haven Peter MacKenzie was welcomed as a new member and Frank Dunstan was welcomed back together with Erik Donnestad. Erik reported that his daughter Julie, now playing sometimes on a Scandinavian Ladies Professional Tour, has had a few top ten finishes, which were helped no doubt by her experiences in playing with the Soi 13 group earlier in the year.

Note: If you would like to play with The Haven group you can contact mobile 084782 4582 or call in to the hotel at 185 Soi 13 between Beach Road and 2nd Road. All transportation to the course is arranged and you do not need to sign up prior to the day, but you should be there by 8.30 on Mondays, Wednesday, Fridays and Sundays on the days you wish to play. A schedule of courses to be played can be found on our web site at www.thehaven-hotel.com.

Victorians victorious at Emerald

Golf from the Travellers Rest

Barry Hooper

Monday, Oct. 4, Pleasant Valley - Stableford
1st Daryl Ottoway (8) 34pts
2nd Roger Wilkinson (12) 34pts
3rd Ted Senior (13) 32pts

The Victorians: Mark Bell & Darryl Ottoway.

Monday we went to Pleasant Valley in pleasant conditions on a very nice course. We had a very small group on the day and Daryl Ottoway took the honours with thirty four points (seems to be a favourite number for him) after beating Roger Wilkinson on count-back. Ted Senior (now Mr. Three) was third at thirty-two.

No 2’s it seems so a bell ring at the Travellers after the game

Thursday, Oct. 7, Phoenix - Stableford
1st Alan Evans (31) 35pts
2nd Ted Senior (13) 34pts
3rd Ito Akitoshi (8) 34pts
4th Fergus Brennan (10) 34pts

Thursday was a visit to our usual venue of Phoenix to play the Lakes & Ocean layout and as always a fair group made the journey to enjoy the attributes of this great course.

One of our very regular players and a stalwart of the TRGG was the winner. I am referring to Alan Evans who came home with thirty-five points and beat Ted Senior (now Mr. Two again) by one point. Ito Akitoshi was third, also at thirty-four points, but losing out on the count-back. Fergus Brennan in fourth place also had thirty-four.

One ‘2’ on the day from Daryl Ottoway - he was having a good week all round it seems

Saturday, Oct. 9, The Emerald - Stableford
1st Mark Bell (10) 34pts
2nd Daryl Ottoway (9) 34pts
3rd Ted Senior (14) 33pts
4th Jim Sykes (8) 31pts

At Emerald on Saturday we only had a small group participating and the course was to prove tough on the day, which kept the scores down. I never know who has played until I see the results sheet. This week I saw that we had a few of our regulars and a couple of retuning old friends to the TRGG. I do not always know where they all come from but try to enquire when I have the time to talk to them.

Well, unbeknown to me (and many other players it seems) was both the winner, Mark Bell, and second placed man Daryll Ottoway who herald from Melbourne in the state of Victoria, Australia. They had never met each other till they came to the Travellers Rest to play golf with us.

Mark only just pipped Daryl, both having thirty-four points after the count-back, Mark twenty on the back nine and Daryl only managing fifteen. Ted Senior was third with thirty-three.

Four 2’s came from Daryl Ottoway, Roger Wilkinson, Amphan North and Mod Chaviraksa.

Note: If you want any further or fuller information about the golf outings played by the TRGG from the Travellers Rest Hotel, please contact the hotel manager Tewin Lamthong on 086 056 7019 or just call in to the Travellers Rest in Soi LK Metro, Pattaya and look at the notice board or visit our website at www.trgg.biz

PSC golf from Lewiinski’s

Sunday, Oct. 3, Green Valley - Stableford
A Flight
1st Stefan Hoge (15) 41pts
2nd Colin Davis (16) 32pts
B Flight
1st Mike Craighead (18) 39pts
2nd Kathy Doody (19) 36pts
Near Pins:
No 4 Stefan Hoge, No 9 Jim Bell, No12 Bob Newell, No16 Jon Haugen

Seamus Cotter.

A fair sized crowd chose to brave the weather and the rain sodden conditions of the course, which was near to unplayable. Stefan Hoge let neither deter him from his game as his splashing and somewhat surprising 41 points was best of the day for the A Flight and match honours. Colin ‘The Donkey’ and ‘Captain’ Seamus were tied on 32 points each - no prizes for guessing the outcome!

B Flight also provided two excellent cards in the shape of Mike ‘the Mechanic’ 39 points and Kathy ‘Helga’ Doody with an even par round.

Mike Craighead and Kathy Doody added a ‘2’ to their winnings along with Chris Davisson and Jon Haguen.

Back at the ranch it was party time, especially for the scribe who took home the free snowball jackpot worth 2,000 baht. Remember you have to be in the bar to win it.

Monday, Oct. 4, Greenwood - Stableford
1st Ed Wyckoff (12) 41pts
2nd Tore Eliassen (15) 36pts

The weather was the story of the day again as continued inclement conditions made it very hard going. The gang did however manage to endure and make it round the course and the field produced two very creditable scores as Ed ‘The right honorable’ Wyckoff’s magnificent 41 points was the best of the day and gave him ‘man of the match’. Tore Eliassen also posted a splendid even par round for the silver.

Ed Wyckoff added a share of the ‘2’s pot to his winnings, along with Don Lehmer.

Wednesday, Oct. 6, Treasure Hill - Stableford
1st Geoff Kubas (19) 35pts
2nd Seamus Cotter (11) 35pts
3rd Mike Jefferies (15) 31pts

The storm clouds were gathering as the Lewiinski’s gang left for Treasure Hill to play a stableford competition (as if the course was not tough enough!)

Well the weather for the third comp in a row did not disappoint the Eastern Seaboard Water Authority. Geoff ‘Elvis’ Kubas took to it like a duck to water as he was singing in the rain, to get the nod over the unlucky Seamus the good captain in the resulting count-back, as both were locked on 35 points. It might be of note that Geoff had two no scoring holes, wereas Seamus had three. Mike Jefferies needed a mere 31 points to close out the flight.

Gordon Cadle posted the day’s only ‘2’.

Friday, Oct. 8, Crystal Bay - Stableford
A Flight
1st Seamus Cotter (11) 40pts
2nd Derek Walsh (9) 34pts
B Flight
1st Richard Mitchell (18) 34pts
2nd Morten Esseth (32)pts

The week was going to form and the title chosen for this submission was doing swimmingly, until someone had to throw a spanner into it, and who better than the Seamus the ‘Captain’ who somehow fashioned a card that destroyed the field. Derek Walsh gratefully accepted the silver some six shots adrift.

Esseth Morten had a surprised look on his face as he was called to the podium via a count-back over the unlucky Frank Ford, both locked on 32 points.

Jimmy ‘The Ladies Man’ Day won a healthy ‘2’s pot.

Note: Lewinski’s is situated on Pattaya Land Soi 1, Beach Road Soi 13/3 near to Walking Street. Anyone wishing to play with us just pop in and add your name to the list or call Colin on 089 826 0764. Transport is provided.

Riggall and Milne keep firm hold of Roo Cup

PSC golf from The Outback Golf Bar

All good humour after Wednesday’s ‘Roo Cup’ as the Aussie boys, Rosco & Steve, left, celebrate late into the evening with the victorious English pairing of Steve & Mark.

Joey’s column

Monday, Oct. 4, Burapha - Stableford

It was nice for the 30 Outbackers, to see some rain today for a change (ha ha), so we could all hide in a drinks stop for an hour or so and chew the fat and reminisce over games gone by. As we had a few fellas out early today, it was too late for the Capt’ to change to the whites tees all the way round; so we were stuck with the ‘blues’ on B side; with some of the tees so far back you needed a leg rope to stop you falling off the back of the tee block.

Mark Bell & Bob Green, the top two in Div. A at Greenwood.

Welcome back to Tony Garnett, pleased to have returned from good old ‘Blighty’, and great to see my mate Mark Bell from Bendigo back for a hit with us even though he got in trouble with his boss for looking at the Outback website whilst on duty. I couldn’t help but put him with the other two coppers from San Francisco - I just knew they would get on like a house on fire.

The results were very ordinary but, considering the weather conditions, very acceptable. There were no carts on the grass at all and while walking up the fairway you could see why there was no run, where the ball landed it stopped dead.

The Capt’ himself showed the way off his dodgy 10 H/cap, with an excellent 40 points to win Div A (the top score by miles) followed home by Murray Hart, who continues to play well, on 36 points,. In Div B, the 33 points from John O’Keefe, now recovered from his shoulder injury, was enough to win, from Bob Lindborg just one back, with fourth place going quite remarkably to Jim Bryan, with a mere 26 points!

You can see where the golfers start and finish can’t you??

There were just three ‘2’s from Tony Garnett, Jim Brackett & Art O’Connor.

Div A (0-14)
1st Bob Philp (10) 40pts
2nd Murray Hart (12) 36pts
3rd Art O’Connor (14) 33pts
4th James Brackett (6) 32pts
Div B (15+)
1st John O’Keefe (18) 33pts
2nd Bob Lindborg (19) 32pts
3rd Chris Muselman (18) 27pts
4th James Bryan (17) 26pts
Monday, Oct. 4, Green Valley - Stableford

Today the alternate Monday for the Outback Golf Bar was once again Green Valley with 18 Outbackers, only three of whom shot better than their handicap. The course was wet and soggy and hard to find relief in the fairways from so much standing water. We had heavy rain for a couple of holes and light sprinkle here and there afterwards; but there was nowhere for the rain to go as the ground and fairways were already soaked.

The course should not have allowed golfers to have carts today as some holes do not have cart paths and with inexperienced caddies driving in the rough, there was much damage done to the course.

As no one had a ‘2’ today we went to six places and all were decided on count-back. For the minor places, Paul Greenway, Paul Bourke and Stefan Hoge all had 35 points with Paul Bourke having the best back nine with 21 points. For first, second and third, George Bishop, Joe Mooneyham and Steve Milne all had 37 points with Gentleman George winning with 20 points on the back.

1st George Bishop (15) 37pts
2nd Joe Mooneyham (14) 37pts
3rd Steve Milne (14) 37pts
4th Paul Bourke (10) 35pts
5th Stefan Hoge (15) 35pts
6th Paul Greenaway (9) 35pts
Tuesday, Oct. 5, Pattaya C.C. - Stableford

This course was waterlogged on Monday, so the additional heavy rain during the night, was only going to make things worse. It was still raining when we arrived at the course, causing many of the overnight declared runners and riders to withdraw, leaving a field of just 11 bravehearts.

It wasn’t pleasant with the ‘English like’ persistent rain but after all the scores were returned, under the scrutiny of our resident chief steward, Chad, Mark Bell, our visiting Aussie copper, was declared first past the post with a hard fought 35 points, a short head ahead of Suzi on 34.

There were no ‘2’s, so the podium continued down to fourth place with Frank O’Neill (33pts) and Geoff Moodie (30pts) taking the minor places.

1st Mark Bell (10) 35pts
2nd Suzi Lawton (16) 34pts
3rd Frank O’Neill (20) 33pts
4th Geoff Moodie (25) 30pts
Wednesday, Oct. 6, Greenwood - Stableford

The Outback rarely travels up the 331, but perhaps it’s time we did more often. In the past our visits to Greenwood have been fraught with either ‘double bookings’ or confrontations with other groups queuing on the tenth, waiting to tee off, resulting in perhaps our last attempt to go there receiving very little support.

This time was different, with 21 Outbackers making the journey and many claiming the course to be in the best condition as any that we play.

Given the A & B nines, the course has stood up to the recent rains extremely well with only the last of groups getting caught in today’s downpour.

Mark Bell followed up his win on Tuesday with another victory, this time with one more point, scoring 36. In second was another Aussie visitor, Bob Green with 35, just finding his form in time for the upcoming Chiang Mai trip. Joe Spinley raced around with B1 & B2 for his 36 points to win Div B ahead of John O’Keefe (33pts) and Ian Button on 30.

There was another ‘Roo Cup’ match as well, when Steve Milne teamed up again with his original partner, Mark Riggall, from way back in July 2009, when they (Steve & Mark) took it off another English due of Paul Greenaway and Bernie Stafford. You would have to go further back to 27th April 2009 when the ‘Roo Cup’ was last in Aussie hands, those of Capt’ Bob & Rosco.

Today Rosco had a new partner, Steve Mann, and they fancied their chances, even though Rosco did look a little bit worse for wear. The Aussies were 2 down at the turn before winning three holes in a row as Steve Milne struggled to find any form but then in the words of his partner, Mark, Steve went pro! He then duffed his drive on the par five 17th, followed by two amazing three woods, before chipping in for a birdie four, sealing the defeat of the Aussies, 2 & 1.

Finally there was a ‘jackpot 2’ bagged by Bruce Milner (B1).
Div A (0-14)
1st Mark Bell (10) 36pts
2nd Bob Green (13) 35pts
3rd Bruce Milner (13) 34pts
Div B (15+)
1st Joe Spinley (19) 36pts
2nd John O’Keefe (18) 33pts
3rd Ian Button (15) 30pts
Friday, Oct. 8, Khao Kheow - Stableford

Outback 1 – Khao Kheow 54 was the scoreline at Khao Kheow, as only one out of the 55 Outbackers playing the B & C nines managed to play better than their handicap and no-one else could even equal it.

The star of the day was Steve Milne; not only did he produce his best round for a while (40pts) to win Div B, he also successfully defended the ‘Roo Cup’ for the second time this week, against the previous holders, the English due of Paul Greenaway and Bernie Stafford, winning 2 & 1. Strangely, Mark, Steve’s playing partner failed to post a score.

Some of the Chiang Mai runners were sharpening their game, Brian Holden winning Div A with 35 points, Steve Mann fourth with 32, Suzi Lawton third in Div B with 33 off 14 and Wayne Waywood, winner of Div C on 34.

Other hopefuls for the 5th Chiang Mai challenge which commences on Monday 18th October are Ian Button and Ron de Groot (third & fourth respectively in Div C) and Bruce McAdam & Dick Hobson, first and second in Div D, both on 31, with Mike Padilla (29pts) in fourth.

There were seven ‘2’s from Julie Lynn, Bob Green, Brian Maddox, John Cogan, Owen Lloyd, Wayne Waywood and Roger Koehler.

Div A (0-11)
1st Brian Holden (7) 35pts
2nd Mark Bell (10) 34pts
3rd Paul Bourke (10) 33pts
4th Steve Mann (10) 32pts
Div B (12-14)
1st Steve Milne (14) 40pts
2nd Murray Hart (12) 33pts
3rd Suzi Lawton (14) 33pts
4th Gary Saunders (12) 33pts
Div C (15-19)
1st Wayne Waywood (15) 34pts
2nd Chris Muselman (18) 34pts
3rd Ian Button (15) 32pts
4th Ron De Groot (16) 31pts

1st Bruce McAdam (20) 31pts
2nd Dick Hobson (23) 31pts
3rd Jim Payne (26) 30pts
4th Michael Padilla (22) 29pts

Welshman wins in Celtic manner

IPGC Pattaya Golf Society at Rabbi’s Elephant Bar

Having endured a long weekend of high golfing drama in front of their TV sets, the Pattaya Golf Society members visited Green Valley on Tuesday 5th October to play a stableford event on a course which, in truth, should not have been open. It had been beaten into submission by tropical storms for a few days and the fairways and rough were all sodden whilst the greens and tee-boxes were saturated. But for golf clubs revenue is essential.

So it was that the PGS set out on their round, all on foot. Forget about golf carts! The drizzle mercifully abated for a few hours and in that time a “pedestrianised” Len Jones had accumulated twenty-one points from the front nine, exhibiting hitherto unseen deft touches around the greens. Still two under at the fourteenth the tempest started again leading to a break of forty minutes and when the final group emerged from the teahouse at the fifteenth tee, the sight was eerily familiar as streams crossed the fairways and no relief was found anywhere from the “casual” water, except maybe in the clubhouse foyer.

Two scratched holes during the final four holes put paid to the leader’s aspirations of a sub-par round and he eventually finished with 36 points, ahead of Tony Thorne and Rick Smith, both on 34.

Earlier Tony Thorne and Ron Matthews had achieved birdie ‘2’s on the ninth when the surface was just about playable but newbie Lyn Deakin’s card of 21 points served as a suitable Booby Bevy candidate on his introduction to PGS golf.

In the memory of many of the group the conditions were as bad as any they had witnessed in many a year on an Eastern Seaboard golf course, but these Celts are made of sturdy stuff!

Australia Day at Crystal Bay

A break in the stormy weather gave the Pattaya Golf Society the opportunity to visit Crystal Bay on Thursday, 7th October, to play a stableford competition on the B and A nines. As with other courses at present, the track was very much rain affected and a lack of recent fairway maintenance made it a poor choice. But where does one choose these days when sudden storms can turn good courses into quagmires at short notice?

With ten Australians contributing to more than half the field it was clear that an antipodean rout would be the on the cards and so it turned out. With the top six places going “down under” in fourth place was Tony Garnett with 34 points, just one behind joint runners-up Tony Thorne and Ray Jackson on 35. The winner was Rick Smith, powerful and accurate, and his gross 74 netted him 40 stableford points for an emphatic victory.

Rick also recorded a birdie ‘2’ on B6 to join Tony Garnett in the ‘2’s pot after the latter’s fine effort on A5.

Attempting to break the Aussie grip on the round, Frenchman Olivier Tahon scored 19 points on the front nine only to squelch and squander his chances with a meagre 7 on the back and he duly received the Booby Bevy.
It had been a trying day at Crystal Bay.

A lady winner at last

The Pattaya Golf Society visited the Emerald course at Ban Chang for its Saturday golf on 9th October. Amazingly the course was in very good condition with good fairways and no sign of the rain damage seen elsewhere recently. Greens were a little slow but they received the ball well.

It was a joy to play golf in dry and sunny weather again and Tim Dale took advantage of it to post a score of 31 points for third place. Swiss golfer John Rehm, consistent as always, recorded a score of 34 points for second place whilst the only lady golfer in the field, a very accomplished Jodie Espinos, swept all before her with a fine 35 point score for the win.

Jodie’s husband Kim took the ‘2’s pot for his excellent effort on the seventh, never an easy hole, and Tony Thorne received the Booby Bevy for some erratic driving having had a “coming together” with a wall, a motorcycle and a baht bus in his hired vehicle on the way to the course. Hardly the best preparation for a round at Emerald.

Exley enjoys his day off

The IPGC Monthly Members’ Tournament

Wednesday, Oct. 6, Bangpra – Stroke/Stableford

A saturated Bangpra was the venue for the October IPGC Monthly Members’ Tournament last Wednesday. Each of these tournaments provides three winners in the gentlemen’s divisions and one from the ladies, who will go forward to the finals to compete for the Gold and Silver Medals later in the season.

Division 1 & 2 winners Russell Exley and Alan Pilkington receive their prizes from IPGC Chairman Chris Knapp.

In addition the tournaments will also be used to determine the IPGC Gentleman Player of the Year, with between 1 and 15 points to be won in each division every month, dependant on final positions, which will then be aggregated for the year to establish the overall winner. As usual the first division contests a stroke play format whilst the second, third and Ladies’ division play Stableford.

The course was extremely saturated as a result of the recent heavy storms and other countries would have seen them closed as the resilient golfers gathered to play. The fairways were heavily damaged by excessive course traffic usage and the usually impeccable greens were soft and spongy, leaving impressions when golfers trod on them. Getting away on time, not being deceived by cloudless skies, the golfers soon realised as their tee shots stopped where they had pitched, that the day would be an arduous one

In the first division the current IPGC Gentleman ‘Player of the Year’, Steve Mascari, led the field off and behind him there were no shortage of golfers intent on usurping his crown. In the event he stuttered to net 81 on the wet track, allowing his main contenders the opportunity to head him off.

Paul McNally, steady and consistent now he is back where he can play as well as work, returned a fine gross 79, net 74 for third place, close on the heels of Mikael Andersson, whose net 73 was his best performance since the event began last summer. The winner was Russell Exley, temporarily throwing off the mantle of competition organiser to post a convincing gross 79, net 72 for the win.

The second division saw Paul Erb’s 32 stableford points finish third, a long way behind Rick Holmes whose 38 points represented the second best round of the day. The flight winner was Alan Pilkington and his forty points on such a course would have given him immense satisfaction.

The third division was taut but nonetheless competitive with Frank Dunstan coming third with thirty points, two behind second placed Tony O’Neil. The winner was Peter McKenzie with 35 points.

In the ‘2’s competitions there was only one in each of the first two Gentleman’s flights with the honours going to Paul McNally and Rick Holmes.

The introduction of a Near Pin competition in all flights was a welcome distraction and the myriad of winners are listed below.

Following a welcome presentation buffet at Rabbi’s Elephant Bar in Soi Buakhao, generously sponsored as always by the IPGC, host bar organiser Len Jones warmly thanked all those who had worked hard once again to ensure the success of the competition, especially registrar Glyn Evans from Jomtien, Starter Chris Knapp, results coordinator Stephen Beard and the event organiser Russell Exley. Prizes were presented by IPGC Chairman Chris Knapp.

Next month the event will be held at the testing St Andrew’s course on Wednesday, 3rd November and entry forms will soon be available in all IPGC venues.

Division 1
1st Russell Exley (7) net 72
2nd Mikael Andersson (9) net 73

3rd Paul Erb 32pts
Division 3
1st Peter McKenzie 35pts
2nd Tony O’Neil 32pts
3rd Frank Dunstan 30pts

Sumner and Slota make winning return

Jomtien Golf with the IPGC

Monday, Oct. 4, Green Valley - Stableford

There had been many heavy storms over the past few weeks here in Jomtien and surrounding areas and we were all wondering as we gathered in Siam Cats if there would be any golf today. Upon arrival when we checked in we found that carts were allowed on the fairways so our ruling of ‘pick clean and place’ was nullified. There were however many complaints from all six groups after nine holes regarding the sodden condition of the course and how difficult it was playing.

Surprisingly enough there was no CV on the podium in Division 1 today, Ya Riley winning with 38 points ahead of Don Head in second on 33, beating the cheese entrepreneur Jean Morel on a 18/17 back nine count-back. Poor old Mikael lost out with 14 on the back nine.

William Chang won Division 2 with 35 points while Russell Benson returned from Kanchanaburi to take second place with 31, and ‘Count-back’ Burnie was third one point behind.

There were smiles from a certain lady as she won the ladies division with 26 points, well done Miss Nut. Her other half was also pleased to take a rollover from Emerald and get the only ‘2’ of the day on the 12th hole in Division 1, well done Don Head. In division 2 three rollovers ensued to Mountain Shadow next Monday.

Friday, Oct. 8, Eastern Star – Stableford

There was heavy rain here all day on Thursday according to the caddies but buggies were allowed, however no sharing today. The first nine holes were a little spongy but the condition of the back nine is ever improving and the grass on all the greens now is getting better every week. There were many good comments back in the clubhouse later.

A field of nineteen out today and two welcomes to Pete Sumner and Chris Slota, who both won their divisions in their first game with us.

The cut today was 4-12 in Division 1 and 13 plus in Division 2 and there were an amazing 5 cards returned in Division 1 with 32 points fighting for podium position. There were three players with eighteen points on the back nine, this now went down to the back six holes and Takimoto Kazuo lost out with 10, as did Tom Sathrum with 11 points. Kari Kuparinen finished third with 12 points and in second place with 20 on the back nine was Mikael Andersson. The winner with 21 points and still playing off 7 was Pete Sumner.

Chris Slota still playing off 23, but not for long, won Division 2 with 37 points, Cully Monks was second two points behind and Neil Gamble took third with 29.

It was a happy return for Pete Sumner as he birdied the 17th for the only ‘2’ of the day in either division. Miss Nut yet again won the ladies division with 33 points with Josie Monks in second place.
