United march on with 4-1 victory over Pichit

Staff Reporters

Pattaya United were on a revenge mission against TTM Pichit FC at the Nonprue Stadium last Sunday after suffering a humiliating 3-0 loss to their northern Thai rivals earlier in the season.

The home side were able to welcome back club captain Niweat Siriwong to the left back position for this match but despite fielding a strong line up it was the visitors who started the game more brightly and they had the ball in the back of the Pattaya United net after only 8 minutes, however fortunately for United the goal was ruled out for offside.

The ‘Dolphins’ hit straight back and within 3 minutes they had taken the lead themselves through left winger Premwut Wongdee.

A quick throw-in down the left side of the field was controlled by Ludovick who cleverly turned the ball inside to Teerawekin Srihawong, creating space for the midfielder to run into. Srihawong then cut into the box before squaring the ball to Wongdee who had the simple task of tapping home from 5 yards out.

It was just the boost United and their fans needed but, far from lying down, Pichit proceeded to frustrate United’s rare attacks in the remainder of the first half while having themselves a couple of decent efforts on goal that Pattaya keeper Narit had to be alert to to keep the ‘Dolphins’ in front at the break.

The visitors continued to pile on the pressure in the second half with Kraikitti In-utane shooting over from a corner kick and Brazilian striker Valci J๚nior seeing his 20 yard free kick well saved by Narit, with Kraikitti unable to turn in the rebound.

It was nervous stuff from United, and not for the first time this season they were found guilty of trying to hold onto a one goal lead, and in the process concede too much possession and territory to their opponents.

When Valci flashed a header just wide of the Dolphins’ goal on the hour mark the alarm bells were ringing and it was time for United to up their game, and that’s exactly what they did through their star forward pairing of Ludovick and Chanabut.

In the 66th minute Ludovick chased down the left wing and managed to harry the defender enough into giving the ball away. The Cameroonian then squared the ball to Tana Chanabut who took one touch before firing a low shot past the Pichit keeper and in off the far post.

Pichit attempted to hit straight back and they were unlucky once more when the lively Narong Jansawek saw his well struck free-kick rebound off the Pattaya goalpost with Narit seemingly beaten.

To add insult to injury, United went back up the field and scored a third and decisive goal just 5 minutes later through Srihawong, who found the ball at his feet 2 yards out after the Pichit defence had failed dismally to deal with a Pattaya corner kick. Srihawong kept his composure to score and make the game safe for the home team.

With the game now in the bag, United decided to ring the changes and one of the loudest cheers of the afternoon was reserved for the appearance of player/coach Thavatchai, who replaced Srihawong in the 83rd minute. The crowd cheered every touch of the ball by the veteran midfielder and it seemed somehow fitting that United should score a fourth goal with the stadium in party mode. Tana chased down a long ball into the Pichit area only to be felled by a lunging challenge from Pichit keeper Todsaporn. Ludovick stepped up to slot the resultant spot kick calmly past Todsaporn and thus maintain his tremendous goal scoring record this season.

There was just time before the end of the match for Pichit to grab a deserved consolation goal through Kraikitti after Narit made a hash of collecting a knock down from a free-kick.

The win keeps United in fourth place in the table, above Thai Port FC on goal difference only. United were due to travel to third place Buriram PEA FC this past Wednesday and will take on sixth placed Bangkok Glass on Saturday in the capital with both games sure to have a large bearing on the end of season positions.

Muang Thong still lead the way on 48 points following their 3-0 win at Bangkok United. Chonburi FC are clinging on to the leaders’ coat tails some five points behind after they secured a 1-0 away win at Sri Sa Ket, the goal coming from Ndebi Berlin in the 4th minute last Saturday.

Chonburi were due to play BEC Tero on Wednesday and will face a difficult away fixture at SCG Samut Songram this coming Sunday.

Evergreen Thaworn has eyes on Thailand Open title

Thai veteran Thaworn Wiratchant is all geared up to put a seal on his glittering career by winning the Thailand Open in Pattaya next week.

The in-form Thai has won 11 titles on the Asian circuit and was crowned the region’s number one in 2005. A win on his home Open, however, has so far eluded him.

But Thaworn will feel very much at home at Burapha Golf Club, the scene of the US$1 million Thailand Open on OneAsia from August 26-29. He has a strong history there having won back-to-back Singha Pattaya Opens at Burapha in 2003 and 2004, and personally regards it as a happy hunting ground.

“I would love to win my home Open,” said the 43-year-old Thaworn. “It is the tournament every Thai player wants to win as we are playing for the King’s Trophy.

“I have won before at Burapha Golf Club but from what I hear they are using a different layout this time. Still, I have good memories of the course.”

Thaworn, whose peerless short game compensates for his lack of length off the tee, finished fifth at the last tournament on OneAsia, the Indonesia Open presented by Enjoy Jakarta. He followed that up with victory at the Singha E-San Open on the Mercedes-Benz Tour.

“I surprised myself with the win at the E-San Open as it is a very long course and I was yards behind the young guys off the tee,” said Thaworn. “But I played well around the greens and that saw me through.”

Thaworn will be up against a strong field at the Thailand Open with 53 of his countrymen, including Kiradech Aphibarnrat and Udorn Duangdecha, who have also tasted victory at Burapha Golf Club.

Hua Hin-based Scotsman Simon Yates has also done well on this course and will tee off at Burapha with them next week.

Liang Wenchong, currently second on OneAsia’s Order of Merit, will want his say in the final outcome.

The Chinese number one will be in a confident mood after a career-best eighth place finish at the PGA Championship last Sunday, the final Major of the year. He made headlines worldwide on day three by setting a new course record of eight-under-par 64 at Whistling Straits on the shores of Lake Michigan.

Victory in the season-opening Luxehills Chengdu Open and a runner-up finish at the Indonesia Open presented by Enjoy Jakarta have taken Liang to within US$100,000 of Y. E. Yang at the top of the Order of Merit.

A win for Liang at the Thailand Open would see him leapfrog the Korean winner of the Volvo China Open into first place with five tournaments remaining on the 2010 schedule.

Highly popular Shingo Katayama, Japan’s number one on five occasions and the winner of 26 events on the lucrative circuit during a brilliant career, will also tee it up at Burapha Golf Club along with New Zealand’s Michael Hendry, the runaway winner of the Indonesia Open.

This year’s Thailand Open is being co-sponsored by Singha Corporation, PTT Public Company Limited, Thailand Convention & Exhibition Bureau (TCEB), Emirates, and CAT Telecom Public Company Limited. (Source - World Sport Group)

Gold medalist leads dragon boat coaching seminar

Rowing and canoeing coaches from eight SE Asian countries attend
the coaching seminar in Sattahip on August 8.

Patcharapol Panrak

Former Olympic gold medalist Scaba Santo taught boaters from eight countries winning techniques in dragon-boat racing at an Asian Canoe Confederation coaching seminar in Sattahip.

The Aug. 8 workshop at the Sattahip Naval Base was organized by the ACC with cooperation from the Rowing and Canoeing Association of Thailand. Fifty-eight coaches from Hong Kong, Macau, Malaysia, South Korea, Singapore, Taiwan, and Thailand took part.

Thai association head Adm. Nipon Jaksu said the ACC course was a new one and was being held for the first time in Thailand. It was a great opportunity, he said, to improve the standard of Thai coaches.

The seminar was also a chance to prepare for the 16th Asian Games in China and 26th Southeast Asian Games in Indonesia. Thailand hopes to win a gold medal at both events, he said.

Winfield free-wheels it at Pleasant Valley

PSC Golf from The Café Kronborg

The Drut

Monday, August 9, Pleasant Valley - Stableford

The Admiral is still on the injured list however the latest news is that he is recovering well and is as toey as a Roman sandal to resume playing.

Nineteen starters, which is a very good number during the low season, departed at 0815 hours and arrived at the course 40 minutes later. The new Boon bus is a revelation as the previous means of transportation was known as the constipation coach - it couldn’t pass anything.

Playing off the white tees the first group teed off at 0940 hours in fine conditions with a light breeze prevailing and finished four hours and twenty five minutes later.

The course is in good condition however the greens were slow and a couple were cored and sanded. The tree planting programme between the 10th and 11th fairways is progressing well.

Martin Todd, who has been playing very consistently and with two wins at his last two starts, was under more pressure than a Sumo wrestler’s beanbag to produce the goods. He kept up his good form to finish in third place in the A flight.

The star of the day was Mike Winfield in the B flight. In nautical terms he was free-wheeling downhill with a wet sail and blitzed the field with 42 points off his 20 handicap.

Courtesy of his great round the handicapper introduced him to a 17 mark for his next game, which naturally went down like a lead balloon.

One player on the 17th was standing off the green however was in line with the flag. A playing partner thinned one out of the bunker from the other side of the green and despite his best leap frog effort; the ball collected him right between the loose change and the handkerchief. The message here is, make sure you are not in line with the pin when someone is coming out of the Lebanese Lawn (bunker). And no, his caddy did not offer assistance to relieve the pain.

The coveted Compass Cap was won for the second time on the trot by Les Hall who reckoned he had as much trouble with his game as Lord Horatio Nelson did shuffling a deck of cards.

We welcomed Andrew Makara from the United States and Tom Cotton from Tropical Berts.

Assisting checking the cards were Martin Todd and Paul Avery which was much appreciated. Also a big thank you must go to Ted Morris who is very supportive of the efforts of all the presenters who run the golf out of the Cafe Kronborg.

A Flight (0–16)
1st Mike Gosden (12) 39pts
2nd Paul Avery (10) 39pts
3rd Martin Todd (7) 37pts
4th Mike Allidi (3) 37pts
B Flight (17+)
1st Mike Winfield (20) 42pts
2nd Patrice Bardy (18) 37pts
3rd Walter Baechli (18) 36pts
4th Ken Bernek (22) 36pts

Wednesday, August 11, Treasure Hill – Stableford

Seventeen intrepid golfers gathered at the Kronborg for the journey to Treasure Hill. Arriving at the course some 50 minutes later we were delighted to see only about a dozen vehicles in the car park.

However the first group, who teed off at 0935 hours, were behind a Thai five-ball who played off the back social tees, walked and it’s a fair bet looking at their swings they would have had more hits than Elvis and The Beatles put together. Despite this the first group completed their round in four hours and forty minutes.

The course was in good condition and the greens albeit a touch slow if you were beneath the pin, putted truly. The ground staff were busy with renovations which will enhance the reputation of the golf course.

It goes without saying that the par fives here are challenging to say the least, but it didn’t worry Ken Bernek who compiled an excellent 39 points to be a runaway winner in the B flight, with Bent Moeller second with 35 points and Kenny Chung in third place with 33 points.

In the A flight it was a tight finish which saw Owen Walkley with 34 points pip Martin Todd on a count-back with Per-Olav Baarli in third spot with 33 points.

Les Hall, who was coming off back to back Compass Cap victories, avoided the treble today with a determined effort. It’s amazing what incentive can do for your golf. The coveted Compass Cap was won by Paul Avery who indicated his putting had the finesse of an orangutan with a Stradivarius.

Mike Winfield, who was reduced by three shots after his Monday round, finished a fair bit off the pace and was heard to mutter something along the lines, “it looks like I’m headed towards the golfers glue factory.”

We welcomed Marnie Kregor and John Haddon from Australia, Bent Moeller from Denmark, Henry Wong from the United States and Kenny Chung who hadn’t had a game with us for some while.

Beaumont bests the field at Green Valley

PSC golf from The Caddyshack

Friday, August 13, Green Valley – Stableford

Twenty five players took on Green Valley from the white tees and Graham Beaumont (12) led the way home in the A flight with a fine 40points. He was followed in by John Murdoch (12) in second with 36 points and Helmut Hebstreit (12) with 35.

Keith Johnson (21) topped the B Flight with 39 points on count-back ahead of Jim Boyd (23) in second. Robert Marsh (27) was third on 37 points.

Five ‘2’s came from Clive Bruce, Ramsay Smith, Helmut Hebstreit, Graham Beaumont and Mike Phillips

Wednesday, August 11, Bangpra - Stableford

Bangpra was in a wet condition as the 16 players began off from the white tees and a “lift, clean & place” ruling had to be employed.

The conditions didn’t seem to bother Damian Trant (9) too much as he came home first in the A flight with 34 points, one ahead of second placed Ted Gardiner.

Bruce Toilitt (17) was the victor in the B flight with 33 points and John Fraser (20) took the runner up spot with 32.

A single ‘2’ came courtesy of Ramsay Smith.

Note: The Caddyshack is situated in Soi 8 Threppasit, follow the Soi to the well appointed Old English style Bar. We play golf twice a week (Wed/Fri) and can also arrange golf outside these days. Call Bruce 081 865 3104, 038-300 683 or Email [email protected]

Hamstad holds on for Greenwood win

PSC Golf from Tropical Berts

Derek Brook

Tuesday, August 10, Greenwood A & C – Stableford

Things seem to be coming back to normal on the Golf front with more players now turning out. On this day we had a full list and breakfast at Bert’s was quite like the old days. Utter confusion as some did not turn out and many more did. Situation normal.

Steve Hamstad with Mike O’Brien and one of Bert’s helpers.

At Greenwood we soon booked in and were sent to the C Nine and were able to get away a little early. The course was in its usual fine condition with the fairways in good shape, and I thought the greens were quite fast and true. That is apart from the annoying habit a lot of the courses have of cutting the hole and not then tamping down the area around the hole. The outcome is that a putt will not die into the hole but rolls off the mound. Quite exciting really!

So we got around and for the first time in a while the weather was fine and we were not threatened by rain and storms. We did see some other groups on the course and all seemed to be moving along quite well.

Back at Bert’s the presentation was made and we had a big surprise, Mashi was not in the frame, but be warned he will be back soon. So the winner was Steve Hamstad with 38 points ahead of a three way count-back on 37 points that saw Mike O’Brien in second, Bill Knight in third and Doug Maiko in fourth. In fifth was Steve Compton with 35 points.

We then set to and enjoyed happy hour. T.T.F.N.

Willy van Heetvelde in dominant form at Green Valley

Jomtien Golf with the IPGC

Monday, August 9, St. Andrews – Stableford

A favourite course amongst our members and still with a reasonable price, it attracted 23 players out there today,

There was a six hundred yard difference between the white and yellow tees and after a little discussion we opted for the forward white tees, much to the majority’s preference.

The course was in excellent condition but with very slick and tricky greens, however this did not deter Rob Lamond and he posted 38 points to win Division 1, with an amazing 21 points on the back nine. Chris Voller was second two points behind and in third place with 33 points was Stuart Thompson.

The ‘four weeks on/four weeks off’ boys took first and second places in Division 2 with Richard Kings winning with 34 points and Willy van Heetvelde coming in second two points behind. There are four players contesting third place all with 31 points; Ian Hart lost out with a back nine count-back of 14, Tony Duthie and Barry Rawlinson had 15 points each, but with 16 Tony Holehouse claimed the last podium spot.

Near pins went to Carl Lovatt (x2), Andy Robinson, Billy Hewitt, Bryan Priestley and Terry Redding.

There were an amazing four ‘2’s today on the par three tenth, 160 yards over the water and with the pin in a difficult position. Bill Hewitt, Rob Lalmond and Chris Voller were the sharp shooters in Division 1, Richard Kings in Division 2, and Terry Redding hit his tee shot on the 17th within three feet of the pin to share the rollover with Richard.

Wednesday, August 11, Green Valley - Stableford

With diminishing numbers now that many have returned to the UK and Europe, there were only 19 out today with the cut in Division 1 coming at 19 and under.

After the recent relocation of the first hole to the previous fifth hole, stroke index 1, we were informed that the tee would be moved to avoid the long carry over the water, but upon arrival the white tee was in the normal position and the starter was adamant we had to start from here. After two shots into the water on this hole, Willy van Heetvelde improved his game over the next seventeen holes and with nine points on the last two he won Division 2 at a canter with 41 points.

Joe Kubon beat Tony Holehouse for second place on a back three count-back of 7/6 after they both finished with 19 points on the back nine and 32 overall.

Ya Riley won Division 1 with 35 points, with Chris Voller second one point behind and the resident lady here at Green Valley, Miss Sang, in third with 32 points.

There are no ‘2’s in either division so a double rollover to Crystal Bay on Monday.

Friday, August 13, Eastern Star – Stableford

After our annual visit to Hua Hin there were 11 players joining us from there in today’s competition, so there were 29 men out plus five of our ladies in their own game.

Thirty-two points won Division 1 for Mikael Andersson with Chris Voller in second place one point behind and Tom Sathrum beat Andy Baber on a 19/18 count-back for third after they both came in with 30 points.

‘Count-back Burnie’ beat Chris Reed 21/20 on the back nine to win Division 2 after they both finished with 36 points and Cully Monks was third with 33.

Miss Kung won the Ladies division with 33 points and Miss Noi was second on 31. Josie Monks played her best round for some time, scoring 28 points for third, well done to her.

Near pins went to Miss Kung, Mikael Andersson, Andy Baber, Chris Voller, Dan ‘the Man’, Josie Monks, Scott Cooper, Barry Rawlinson.

Andy Baber birdied the 6th and Chris Reed the 13th to win both divisions in the ‘2’s today.

Many thanks from all of us at Jomtien Golf to Roger’s group for providing the buffet back at Siam Cats later that evening.

Priddy passes stern test

IPGC Pattaya Golf Society at Rabbi’s Elephant Bar

The Pattaya Golf Society travelled to Greenwood on Tuesday, August 10 for the first of its two regular monthly merit events, this time stableford over the A and C nines. With the white tees well back and lightly sanded but uncut greens, the course was best described by a senior member of the group as “brutal”: long and with slow greens, just the tonic for the group.

The two flights were cut at fifteen and under and in the top division Peter Duncan joined Paul McNally in a share of second place with 32 points each, Paul firing the day’s best gross figures of 82, whilst Haven regular Fred Land went one better with a fine 33 points for the win.

In the second flight Ronnie Ramsay and Masashi Iizumi shared second place with 30 points whilst Kenny Priddy, again from the Haven, fired the best score of the day, 36 points for the win.

There were no birdie ‘2’s and the Booby Bevy went to Tim Lazecki for making a poor fist of the round having shot one-under at Plantation on his previous outing. This despite the pressing claim by Paul Bartlett for depositing his scorecard in the locked Caddy Evaluation box after the round. The question on everyone’s lips was “Which box did it go into? ‘Excellent’, ‘Good’, ‘Fair’ or ‘Poor”?”

On days such as this Greenwood is truly a challenge and golfers need a round like that once in a while.

Masashi takes a holiday fling

The Pattaya Golf Society celebrated the birthday of HM the Queen with a good stableford competition at Rayong CC on Thursday, August 12, with hardly any others golfers there to slow things down. Times are hard when even local gofers miss out on a holiday opportunity such as this.

In a very competitive field it was perhaps appropriate that two Thai golfers should be in the frame and in third place was newest IPGC member Mali Upakam, the former Green Valley caddy scoring an impressive 34 points. Ahead of her in second place was Wichai Tananusorn with 35 and the best gross figures of the day.

The winner was popular Japanese golfer Masashi Iizumi and his 36 points was a reflection of his accuracy throughout the round. It was helped by an exquisite birdie ‘2’ on the seventh and he shared the pot with Tony Thorne after another fine effort on sixteen.

The Booby Bevy was reserved for Tony Thorne for achieving a “Sorbent” in Aussie parlance, wiping three consecutive holes from four through six. The day stayed fine throughout and the holiday competition was a success at Rayong CC.

Eastern Star is waning fast

The very patient golfers of the Pattaya Golf Society visited Eastern Star on Saturday, August 14, in the vain hope that they could enjoy a stableford competition on the once favourite course. The weather, which was miserable, was probably the best feature of the day and it is sad to see once pristine greens now scarred and bare. But, as a club member commented, they are now consistent!

This was the backdrop to the competition and little wonder scores were no more than moderate with Tony Thorne and Martin Solberg sharing second place with 31 points each. The day’s winner was local member Mikael Andersson and his score of 32 points mirrored his winning effort the previous day with the Jomtien group. Eastern Star two days in succession - he must be keen!

There were no birdie ‘2’s and the Booby Bevy was reserved for Paul Bartlett for leaving his change bag in Rabbi’s in the morning and his dirty bag in the winner’s car in the evening. At least it gave the golfers some light relief on an otherwise pretty miserable day at Eastern Star.

Wood eagles 18 to end ten year medal drought

PSC golf from Lewiinski’s

Sunday, August 8, Green Valley - Monthly Medal
A Flight
1st Mark Wood (10) net 68
2nd David Hamilton (6) net 68
B Flight
1st Jez Lees (17) net 73
2nd Joe Tynan (33) net 73
Red Flight
1st Mike Craighead (17) net 79
2nd Yui Bietry (13) net 81
Near Pins:
No4 Chris Davisson, No9 Yui Bietry, No12 Pierre Bietry, No16 Mark Wood.

Until now Mark Wood could easily be described as the best Lewiinski’s golfer never to have won a monthly medal. Well today this fine Scottish lad finally ended ten years of hurt and many a near miss as his best of the day net 68 gave him his first medal win. Mark’s round was further notable in that it was achieved courtesy of an eagle on the par four eighteenth hole. This achievement also gave Mark the sole ownership of the ‘2’s pot to add to his near pin money on the par 3 sixteenth hole.

Sunday’s winners: Jez Lees, Mike Craighead and Mark Wood.

Mark was pushed all the way by the unlucky David Hamilton who was relegated to second via a count back.

Jez ‘The Principal’ Lees took top spot in B Flight with another count-back victory over Joe ‘SatNav’ Tynan as both leveled off with a net73. Interestingly, Jez was playing with medal winner Mark and managed a birdie himself on the 18th, but lost his private England/Scotland match with Mark as the latter’s eagle gave him a 2-up victory.

There were no surprises in the Red Flight as Mike added another mug to his collection, which now stands at six for the year. Yui Bietry came second two shots back of Mike’s net 79. As most of our readers know, Mark and multiple qualifier Mike will go on to contest the gold medal later in the year.

Back at Lewiinski’s it was party time as Mark, Jez then Jay made it a hat-trick of bell rings.

A footnote to the day: readers may note that Mark followed up his win today with an amazing 44 points the very next day whilst playing back at Green Valley with our friends from The Golf Club. Quite a couple of day’s golf! Let’s see what the handicappers make of it all.

Tuesday, August 10, Greenwood - Stableford
1st Jimmy Day (15) 38pts
2nd Eddy Beilby (17) 34pts

No one knows when he will strike, but County Wicklow’s Jimmy ‘The ladies man’ Day never keeps them waiting long. The Irishman’s 38 points was the best of the day while Eddy ‘the Eagle’ Beilby picked up the balance in the flight four shots adrift. (Richard will be pleased).
No ‘2’s were recorded rollover Wednesday.

Wednesday, August 11, Plantation - Stableford
1st Bob McPhail (18) 39pts
2nd Robert McVey (14) 36pts
3rd Craig Weyer (14) 35pts

The formidable plantation was the setting for today’s bash, as the course glared its teeth with only one competitor bettering par. Bob McPhail fashioned a fine 39 points for the top rung on the ladder.

Robert Mcvey posted a solid even par for the second position, leaving Craig Weyer with a very respectable 35 points to fill the flight.
No ‘2’s were recorded double rollover Friday.

Friday, August 12, Mountain Shadow - Stableford
1st Morten Esseth (20) 38pts
2nd Seamus Cotter (11) 38pts

It is always tough to lose on count-back. It is always tough not to win at Mountain Shadow when you post 38 rock solid points, but that’s what happened to the good Captain, as Morten Esseth gained a memorable victory via the resulting count-back to win the day’s honors.

Also on offer today was a double ‘2’s rollover that went untouched resulting in a treble rollover next Tuesday at St Andrews?

Note: Lewiinski’s is situated on Pattaya Land Soi 1, Beach Road Soi 13/3 near to Walking Street. Anyone wishing to play with us just pop in and add your name to the list or call Colin on 089 826 0764. Transport is provided.

Joey’s column

Monday, August 9, Burapha - Stableford

What a long starting hole the first on B is, from the blue tee, some 430 yards up hill; what mortal can reach that in two? The other nine we played was D, from the whites, since we believe the head groundsman’s forgotten how wide a fairway should be and if you miss, boy, is the rough tough! But even if you get through the first eight holes on D with a fair score, you still have to contend with the 9th – another monster par 4 - it’s only 460 yard long.

Emerald winners, Don Everett (Div B)
and Murray Hart (Div A) with PGA Pro Joe Moore.

Twenty six Outbackers today in pleasant playing conditions, although the greens were a little hairy, making then very grainy (maybe keeping them long ahead of the upcoming Asian Tour event) and B looked a tad scruffy in places, perhaps as a result of all the new pro tee boxes they have been building.

The top scores were in Div B from Sel Wegner and Stefan Hoge, both making 37 points with Bob Finley back in third on 34. Sel, who is on an extended stay here in Pattaya, has turned in some consistent results with the Outback, and it was not a difficult decision for Capt’ Bob and General Jack to cut him to 13 for the foreseeable future.

In Div A, Bobby Driggs, a lefty, appeared to be running away with it on the front nine, scoring an excellent 20 points after holing some long putts. However, he came back to the field on the back after hitting one OB on the long 4th on D, then, to the amusement of the caddies and his playing partners, he borrowed a right handed driver, turned it upside down, and proceeded to hit his provisional ball, quite well!

Jack (35pts) missed a couple of putts but managed to hang on to second just ahead of Steve Mann (34pts), who was on a back nine charge.

There were four ‘2’s from Capt’ Bob, Rick Evans & Scotty Qua had two.

Div A (0-13)
1st Robert Driggs (12) 36pts
2nd Jack Moseley (13) 35pts
3rd Steve Mann (9) 34pts
4th Mark McDonald (4) 34pts
Div B (14+)
1st Sel Wegner (14) 37pts
2nd Stefan Hoge (16) 37pts
3rd Robert Finley (14) 34pts
4th Ivan Plunkett (20) 31pts

Monday, August 9, Pleasant Valley - Stableford

Although not as popular an alternate on a Monday as Green Valley, the 8 Outbackers who played at Pleasant Valley put on a high class show, with everybody scoring 30 points or more, playing from the blue tees, except Suzi, who played from the reds, of course.

George Bishop, suffering from a recent slump in form which has seen his handicap go out to 16, bounced back with his old swing to storm the field with a great 43 points, to win by six from his playing partners, Paul Greenaway in second (37pts) and Bernie Stafford (aka Sausage) with 36.

There were two ‘2’s from George and Suzi.

Our thanks today to Joe for organising the day and for the record, the course was in fair shape.

1st George Bishop (16) 43pts
2nd Paul Greenaway (11) 37pts
3rd Bernie Stafford (15) 36pts
Tuesday, August 10, Pattaya C.C. - Stableford

What a wonderful crazy day at Pattaya Country Club; not only did we have to contend with Norm (the chatter) Cheetham with his dodgy Aussie handicap but we also had a group of players (a six-ball) from Scandinavia who teed off over two hours before us (about 7am). They quite happily called us all through at the drink stop before the 16th and were clearly really enjoying the day. As we teed off from the 18th, one of them, teeing off from the 16th, fell over and couldn’t get up, quite literally having to crawl from the tee, much too everybody’s amusement - and we think we drink too much! A couple of minutes later he was bundled into to the Marshall’s cart and escorted back to the clubhouse. Good on you guys!

Right, down to business! Sixteen players today, course OK but four greens sanded making life difficult. Just the one division with places down to fifth.

Terry Marney with 37 points won again (is he getting too comfortable off his 27 H/cap?) and the Cheetham was second, also with 37. He tried hard (Norm that is) to get the organiser (Chad) to amend the count-back system but to no avail but the chatter alone nearly persuaded him, just to shut him up.

Geoff Doody (35pts) took third ahead of Roger Yabsley (34pts), last week’s winner, who was a different golfer today on the front nine, but he came back with a vengeance, racking up a massive 22 points to take fourth place ahead of Jack, who finished birdie, birdie.

There were two ‘2’s from Unto Kilvonen.

If you want a good day out and a game of golf with no pressure, come and join us any Tuesday at 9.30am sharp!

1st Terry Marney (27) 37pts
2nd Norm Cheetham (18) 37pts
3rd Geoff Doody (21) 35pts
4th Roger Yabsley (25) 34pts
5th Jack Moseley (13) 34pts
Wednesday,August 11, The Emerald - Stableford

Emerald, as usual, was in great condition and it was very nice of Candy, the Manager to greet us at the door, and the fact that we had booked for six groups but turned up with nine didn’t pose a problem.

There was a match between the Scots, Ian & Scotty and the North Brits, Paul & Bernie, which was won by the Scots, 1 Up, much to the consternation of good old England.

Welcome to Aussie visitors Cal and Joe, Joe hailing from Springwood Country Club, NSW, where he is the Club Pro, and thanks for the prezzies Joe.

There was some good scores and some ordinary ones but the best of the day came from Murray Hart (40pts), just back from Aussie, who continued the dazzling form he was playing before he went away. Paul Greenaway also played well for his 38 and Greg Flanagan, another Aussie visitor who has been with us a few times now, finished in the frame again on 37.

Don Everett, who returns Down Under in the next couple of days, finished off his holiday on a high with a fine 39 points to take Div B, four clear of Paul (35pts) and another four guys all with 33.

We didn’t get any rain and play was completed in under four hours. Strange there were no punctures today, obviously someone must have cleaned the roads.

For the record, 34 Outbackers played and there were five ‘2’s from Ian Heddle, Murray Hart, Elaine Brookfield & Colin Goon got two.

Div A (0-15)
1st Murray Hart (14) 40pts
2nd Paul Greenaway (11) 38pts
3rd Greg Flanagan (14) 37pts
4th Ian Heddle (4) 35pts
5th Sel Wegner (13) 34pts
Div B (16+)
1st Don Everett (26) 39pts
2nd Paul Leary (20) 35pts
3rd George Bishop (16) 33pts
4th Barry McIntosh (18) 33pts
5th Doone Flanagan (21) 33pts

Friday, August 13, St. Andrews - Stableford

It did look as though today was going to be a wet round, overcast and humid, to follow what had clearly been torrential rain overnight. Many of the bunkers had severe wash damage and several were still full of water and upon reflection, maybe they should have all been declared GUR. However, after a shorter delay than expected, the starter got the 33 Outbackers away ahead of schedule, with Capt’ Bob going out in one of the early groups to leave the organisation of the remainder of the pack in the capable hands of Steve Mann.

At the half way point there were reports coming back through the field of players with 23 points and 22 points as well as a number around the 18 or 19 mark, but the back nine played tough with little or no roll on the ball and at the end of the day, apart from Steve Milne (40pts), Sel Wegner (38pts) and Louis Doyon (37pts), nobody else beat their handicap.

Tony Garnett started very solidly and looked set for a big score before a couple of bogies and a double pegged him back but he steadied the ship before taking four to get down from about 40yds on the last to end on 35 points, which was surprisingly enough to win Div A.

There were just two ‘2’s and they both came on the toughest par 3 on the course, the long 17th with the pin placed right up on top level at the back; Suzi Lawton got one and Kev Reid the other.

Div A (0-11)
1st Tony Garnett (10) 35pts
2nd Colin Goon (5) 34pts
3rd Steve Mann (9) 33pts
Div B (12-15)
1st Sel Wegner (13) 38pts
2nd Louis Doyon (12) 37pts
3rd Rosco Langoulant (15) 35pts
Div C (16+)
1st Steve Milne (16) 40pts
2nd George Bishop (16) 34pts
3rd Barry McIntosh (18) 32pts

Murphy on top once more

PSC Golf from The Three Sister’s Bar

Some are beginning to suspect the Three Sisters Group have a weather magician amongst them. We experienced overcast skies this past 11th of August but with only a very light shower on a couple of holes. The course was in fairly good shape but most of the holes could use new greens.

Winner Dale Murphy, left, with runner-up Herbie Ishinaga.

Back at Caddy Shack II Herbie supplied snacks and great ham sandwich slices. A variety of beverages were also available.

Cards were tallied and not surprisingly Dale Murphy came in on top with a 38 pointer, followed by four players with 34; Herbie Ishinaga, Sus Ige, Bangkok Rodney, and Arnold Van der Graff. On count back Herbie took second place.

Pilkington returns to glory

IPGC golf from The Haven Weekly

Monday, August 9, Crystal Bay A & C - Stableford
CSS 72
1st Paul Hartley (20) 40pts
2nd Rodney Hayes (9) 36pts
3rd Don Everett (25) 34pts
4th Shuichi Kodaka (17) 33pts
5th Rod Howett (25) 32pts

Crystal Bay was a very quite course when the group from Soi 13 arrived to play, and with the weather threatening to break out into a storm all day, it remained so for the complete round. In the event the day’s play was only slightly affected by a little rain, and the scoring was fairly good over the whole field as much of the scruffy areas of the past had been dealt with and although lift and place in the fairways was the rule for the day, the general condition was quite good.

Alan Pilkington.

Paul Hartley, having previously gone close to the top spot recently, at last reached the ultimate position with a fine round of four under handicap which will see his handicap reduced to its lowest all time for next week’s games and certainly low enough to head the family pecking order when his son arrives in the next few weeks.

Rodney Hayes was once again to be found in the mix with another round that was good enough for a place but not low enough to affect his handicap. He in turn headed Don Everett by a couple of points, as Don continues to apply the steady approach as recommended by his resident doctor and also continues to prosper.

Shuichi Kodaka just got the better of Rod Howett by a point for the final two spots for the day.

There were no 2’s in either division.

Before presenting the prizes Stephen Beard welcomed back Peter Aitcheson.

Wednesday, August 11, Pattana A & B - Stableford
CSS 74
1st Rodney Hayes (9) 34
2nd Russell Exley (7) 33
3rd Evan Millar (21) 31 cb 16
4th Shuichi Kodaka (17) 31 cb 14
5th Bob Lamond (6) 30

Pattana off the white tees is usually a fair distance and on this day the tees had been set well back on the longer front nine and forward on the inward half, which allied to the very wet conditions, was enough of an added difficulty factor to push the CSS for the day up one to 74.

Rodney Hayes.

Rodney Hayes can always be relied upon to shine when the going gets tough, and his remarkably steady game off the tee allied to a very tidy short game ensures that he will usually be found amongst the day’s winners.

This day was no exception, although it was a very close call as he just got the edge on Russell Exley by a single point to once again take the top placing of the day.

Evan Millar played a very tidy round to just get the nod in the count-back with Shuichi Kodaka with a better score of 16 to 14 over the back nine.

Bob Lamond took fifth place after playing a round that deserved a much better result in the placings but suffered from a few too many putts failing to drop.

Once again there were no 2’s in the first division but Roar Berger had one in the second division to sweep the pot which included a couple of roll overs.

Friday, August 13, St Andrews - Stableford
CSS 73
1st Alan Pilkington (10) 37pts
2nd Russell Exley (7) 37pts
3rd Paul Hartley (20) 37pts
4th Bob Maloney (13) 35pts
5th Rodney Hayes (9) 34pts

St Andrews off the white tees is a little on the short side at approximately 6300 yards and a little too long off the yellow tees at 6850 yards, so it was no surprise to find that the CSS for day from the white went down by one, even with the course allowing no run off the tee shot and with the course heavily affected by the recent heavy rainfall in the area.

In the conditions, lift and place in the fairways was in play for the third time in the week which helped in making the scoring a bit easier to achieve.

Alan Pilkington, playing in the same group as Russell Exley and Rodney Hayes and having just returned from a holiday in the UK where he obviously had spent much of the time practicing his golf swing without the usual distractions to be found in fun city, just prevailed on the last hole with a chip in eagle three for five points after standing on the tee two behind Rodney and one less than Russell. But with Rodney almost unbelievably slipping in a “J Arthur” on his second shot, which led to a very ugly eight and zero points, and Russell only able to collect four points, also from a chip in, but only for birdie, it left Alan with the win by virtue of a better count back of 23 to 18 over Russell and a stunning level par gross for the inward half.

With nearly all the action going on in the leading group, it fell to Paul Hartley to split up the trio with yet another good round, but slightly adrift in the count-back, managing only 16 for third place.

Bob Maloney made it a good final game prior to his return to WA for some well needed rest, before facing another grueling visit to Pattaya in October, as he took fourth spot ahead of the sadder and chastened Rodney in fifth.

There were no 2’s in the second division but Russell Exley, Bob Maloney and Trevor Schirmer shared the first division pool which included the rollovers.

Back at The Haven, prior to the presentations, Alan Pilkington was welcomed back and there were farewells for Bob Maloney, Don Everett, Fred Land and Kenny Priddy.

Note: If you would like to play with The Haven group you can contact mobile 084 782 4582 or call in to the hotel at 185 Soi 13 between Beach Road and 2nd Road. All transportation to the course is arranged and you do not need to sign up prior to the day, but you should be there by 8.30 on Mondays, Wednesday, Fridays and Sundays on the days you wish to play. A schedule of courses to be played can be found on our web site at www.thehaven-hotel.com.

Cheetham is back

Golf from the Travellers Rest

Saturday’s top three Norman Cheetham, Jon Dean and Amphan North with birthday boy Gareth Herbert holding his cherished “Nagger” award.

Barry Hooper

Norman Cheetham is back. He left Thailand with a fifteen handicap and returned from Aussie land with an eighteen, played off that on Saturday at Eastern Star and romped home in first place, beating Jon Dean by just one. Third was that lady again Amphan North - not out of the top three for four weeks in a row.

Monday, August 9, Green Valley - Stableford
1st Fergus Brennan (21) 34pts
2nd Daryl Ottoway (16) 34pts
3rd John Dean (16) 34pts

We went to Green Valley on Monday with a modest group and just one division. I have it reported that conditions were very damp and there was little if no run on the ball, hence the very low scores.

Fergus Brennan however found some form and though it took a count-back to decide the top three it has to be said that scoring 21 on the back nine and five up on his nearest rival was most definitely a good win.

In second place was Daryl Ottoway who edged Jon Dean on the countback calculations.

Three 2’s came from Robert Cannon, Tewin Lamthong and Fergus Brennan.

Wednesday, August 11, Wangjunta - Stableford
1st Arnold Jones (15) 32pts
2nd Warren Gallop (10) 31pts
3rd Ted Senior (12) 28pts
4th Fergus Brennan (10) 25pts

No play on Tues but on Wednesday many a player joined in the trip up to Wanjuntr G.C., a non qualifier event but the results found Arnold Jones at the top of the list with thirty-two points, following in by Warren Gallop and Ted (Mr ‘2’) Senior.

No ‘2’s on the day so a bell ring on the return to the Travellers Rest

Saturday, August 14, Eastern Star – Stableford
1st Norman Cheetham (18) 34pts
2nd Jon Dean (8) 33pts
3rd Amphan North (10) 30pts

There was no play on Thursday as Phoenix had priced themselves out of the market, but on Saturday it was back to the Banchang area and this time Eastern Star with a small group.

It was fortuitous it seemed that it was only a small group as the course was not in great condition and the greens were very, very bad. I seem to have read many a report of late with the same comments, as a result of which the management were later asked for their explanation and the TRGG were advised that they are “without a full time green keeper at the moment and a new one is starting soon.”

The upshot from that is that they plan to be resurfacing all the greens over the next twelve months. So the TRGG will be giving it a miss for the near future until they sort matters out.

Results on the day were a win for Norman Cheetham with thirty-four points ahead of second placed Jon Dean and Amphan North in third.

Once again there were no ‘2’s so another bell ring back at the presentation.

There was however a nice surprise in store for those who did return to the Travllers Rest as it was Gareth Herbert’s birthday and it so happens that he was awarded the “Nagger” award (lowest score) on the day. Great food was provided for all in attendance. Gareth rang the bell along with many others and before you knew it a party atmosphere ensued for the rest of the evening. That it seems is what often happens these days at the TRGG. Good golf, good fun and a great atmosphere.

Note: If you want any further or fuller information about the golf outings played by the TRGG from the Travellers Rest Hotel, please contact the hotel manager Tewin Lamthong on 086 056 7019 or just call in to the Travellers Rest in Soi LK Metro, Pattaya and look at the notice board or visit our website at www.trgg.biz

Robbins rules the roost

PSC golf from The Bunker

Monday, August 9, Rayong C.C. - Stableford

Rayong C.C. has become a regular venue in recent months, but this time we found the course in rather poor condition, with very dry fairways, inconsistent sanded greens, and shabby tees. Although most golfers enjoy the layout, they struggled on the greens and the scores were generally lower than we have come to expect here.

Tony Robbins enjoyed a return to form to win the competition with 37 points, beating Colin Greig on a count-back. The shot of the day, however, came from Geoff Williams who narrowly missed a hole-in-one to finish 3 inches from the pin on the 12th hole, snatching the near pin prize from Geoff Parker, who was counting his chickens, after finishing 3 foot from the pin.

Dave Galvin, Peter Habgood and Reg Smart secured the other near pins.

1st Tony Robbins (14) 37pts
2nd Colin Greig (13) 37pts
Wednesday, August 11, Wangjuntr G.C. - Stableford

Taking advantage of the low season promotion, we decided to make a longer than usual trip to Wangjuntr Valley course for the first time as a society. A decision was made to play from the blue tees (the main instigator being Gerry) and this proved disastrous for some of the higher handicap golfers who could not negotiate the 200 plus yard carry over water on the 9th hole.

Some of the holes here are very long (a 479 yard par 4, and a 623 yard par 5 for example) and the course is really only suitable for lower handicap golfers. At the best of times this is one of the most difficult and longest courses in the area, and today the course was shabby and undergoing maintenance to several greens. Hence the scores were low with Peter Habgood taking the honours, defeating Tony Robbins on a count-back with 31 points. Third place was taken by Bruce Gladden with 29 points.

A feature of this course is that it includes 5 par 3’s (and 5 par 5’s) but only 3 near pins were claimed on the day, by Dave Galvin, Peter Habgood and Reg Smart.

Generally the overall consensus was that the condition of the course was disappointing, and that it is not really suitable for a society competition, and certainly not from the blue tees.

1st Peter Habgood (17) 31pts
2nd Tony Robbins (14) 31pts
3rd Bruce Gladden (15) 29pts
Friday, August 13, Greenwood G.C. - Medal

Friday the 13th turned out to be a lucky day, with the Greenwood course in great condition and the weather ideal. Playing on good greens for the first time this week, proved tricky for some, and the fairways provided very little roll, so the course was the winner on the day, with no golfer bettering his handicap.

Tony Robbins completed a successful week (2 first places and a second) before departing on holiday, hopefully giving someone else a chance to win. Colin Greig claimed second place (losing to Tony again) and William Macey took third place, winning a four-way count-back.

Very unusually only two near pins were claimed, by John Graham and Hugh O’Donnell

1st Tony Robbins (14) net 73
2nd Colin Grieg (13) net 74
3rd William Macey (16) net 78

The Golfer of the Month competition has reached an interesting halfway stage, with the two current leaders (Tony Robbins and John Graham) taking a break for holidays or work, and leaving the field open for some new faces on the leader board.

Doubles are in, as Jeff goes back to back

PSC Golf from Mulligans Lakeside

Tuesday, August 10, Green Valley - Stableford

Last week it was Derek, this week it was Jeff who made the best of the conditions and courses. Tuesday was Green Valley, where the course was in great condition, fairways well grassed and smooth, with consistent, mid paced greens. The weather was kind to us, with no rain, so ideal conditions for all.

Recently returned Ray Ryan shares a beer with John Chapman after showing a big improvement in his game this week.

Jeff Wylie (7) led the way with 36 points, from Bob Edwards (9) with 34, while Ray Ryan, returning after a long absence last week, rediscovered some form to shoot a much better 28 points.

Near Pins were picked up by Jeff and Bob, with Ken grabbing two. Bob was the only one to convert for birdie.

Friday, August 13, Bangpra - Stableford

Thursday was a holiday, so we opted to switch to a Friday game at Bangpra, one of the oldest courses in the area, but following some design changes over the past 2 years, a very good test.

Following overnight rains, the course management had said no carts on the fairways, so accordingly “lift, clean & place” was applied, (as per PSC local rules). The balls were picking up a little mud, but no casual water was in evidence, but rules is rules.

Jeff (7) again was to the fore, recording a 39 point total, to romp away with the win, followed in by Ken Hole (14) with 30 points. Good scores were out there, as evidenced by Keith Hodges’ 21 points on the front 9, but amateur golf is a fickle game, it comes, it goes!

Near Pins were secured by Bob and Jeff, with two, while the 17th resulted in a donation to the Banglamung Boys Home.

Just a point on the “lift, clean & place” rule - watching some US PGA Tour coverage where that rule is sometimes used, they consider it is worth about 3 shots a round to gain the advantage of having the ball in hand. Maybe a point for the handicap committee to consider for assessment purposes.

Note: Mulligans Lakeside plays golf generally on Tuesday & Thursday (we sometimes change to accommodate a Thai Holiday). Presentations are made at the course on Tuesday, with Mulligans Lakeside hosting the Thursday presentation. For more details on scheduling etc, please call Jeff 089 094 1841 or Ray 081 935 8088. Hope to see you there, Cheers & Good Golfing!

Pattaya Sports Club Bowling League

200 Bowlers: Somrak, Kran & Nok.

It was the clash of the titans as first place Café’ Kronborg and second place VFW Post 9876 met for the first time in week 9 of league bowling. VFW Post 9876 bested Café Kronborg, taking 3 of 4 points and narrowing the gap between first and second place to 1.5 points.

The VFW Post 9876 team got off to a strong start by rolling a 605 series in the first game led by Somrak’s 214, the high score of the day. Kran Nielsen rolled a 202 score in game two leading Café’ Kronborg’s to take their lone point. The final 200+ game was rolled by Nok Kennedy of Sabai Friday who rolled a score of 201 in their 2 – 2 split with USMC.

Team Canada made the biggest move of the day, moving from fifth place to third place by taking 3 points from House of the Golden Coin as they dropped from third to fourth place. Brother D dropped to fifth place despite taking 3 games from Green Tree. Team Bavaria took 3 points from Jack Tar, but were unable to advance in the standings.

Most tables ended up in two or three hearts by South, making nine tricks.  My table was an exception - I had the South hand and played it in two hearts, but good defence gave me no chance of an overtrick.  West led the ace of spades, followed by the three.  I took East’s queen with my king and led a heart to try and pull trumps.  West went up with the ace immediately and switched to a diamond.  East’s jack won and he led another spade, trumped by West.  The ace of diamonds completed the defence’s five tricks (ace of spades, ace of hearts, spade ruff and two high diamonds).

But, EW can do better.  Can you see their best contract?  It is 3N by East.  Assume you get a heart lead.  Declarer ducks until the third round.  Declarer then forces out the ace of clubs (and breathes a sigh of relief when North wins the trick and has no more hearts to return).

North’s best lead at this point is a spade.  However, declarer wins the ace and successfully finesses the diamonds.  EW make the aces of hearts and spades, three high diamonds and four clubs for nine tricks and the contract.

Only one pair managed to find this optimum contract - well done for excellent bidding.
