World Environment Day 2010
with a CSR commitment

is seen with the management and staff as they prepare to begin the charity
work for Jittapawan Temple.
True to its mission of supporting any tasks or projects
as long as they are for the good of the environment, the five-star resort
led by its General Manager Chatchawal Supachayanont celebrated this year’s
World Environment Day at the Jittapawan Temple just off North Pattaya with
their brooms and cleaning tools on hand as they offered to help spruce up
the temple compound including its pavilion and halls for merit-making
ceremonies.
The day’s commemoration was part of the hotel’s Corporate
Social Responsibility activities through social contributions organized by
its Green Leaf Committee that oversees the strict implementation of in-house
policies towards water and energy conservation, waste management, chemical
reduction and charity work for the community. The hotel makes a monthly
visit to the temple to bring donations of cash and other basic necessities.
On May 26, the hotel was accompanied by its friends and
associates when it visited Jittapawan Temple for a merit-making ceremony and
to offer donations. The significance of the day was deeper and more solemn
as it carried a heartfelt and personal note from those who attended and
offered their prayers.
Baht stable despite impact of
European public debt crisis: BoT
Asian currencies including the Thai baht are holding their
stability at present despite the heavy volatility of the euro, fuelled by the
public debt crisis in some European countries, according to the Bank of Thailand
(BoT).
BoT Assistant Governor Suchada Kirakul said the regional
currencies had not been adversely affected by the debt problems in Europe
because the economic fundamentals of the Asian countries are rather strong as
could be witnessed by the impressive economic growth of many countries in the
first quarter of this year. She indicated Singapore as an example, which enjoyed
a 15 percent growth, and Thailand 12 percent expansion.
“The regional currencies including the baht are seen
weakening slightly on a daily basis, but they have nonetheless strengthened
since early this year. For instance, the baht has risen 2.4 percent, the
Indonesian rupiah by 2.6 percent and the Malaysian ringgit by 4.8 percent,” she
said.
The baht had moved rather steadily partly because the
currency had already weakened to a certain extent due to tensions in the Korean
peninsula and Thailand’s domestic political disorder.
Capital movements have been rather balanced for the moment
although foreign capital has been flowing out from the stock market in some
amount.
She said that some foreign funds had still flowed into the
bond market and foreign investment funds (FIF) remitted investment returns.
Simultaneously, the trading of exporters and importers had
been rather in equilibrium, resulting in the baht becoming stable, she said.

Internet currency-trading
scam broken up, 2 arrested
Theerarak Suthathiwong
Department of Special Investigations officers have busted
up an Internet fraud operation that swindled more than 100 people out of
more than 50 million baht.

Prasit Rungroj (seated), 50, owner of Rayong-based
Perfect Co., has been arrested for an Internet fraud operation.
Prasit Rungroj, 50, owner of Rayong-based Perfect Co.,
and Thaiyapat Thongthae, the wife of a senior Thai National Police officer,
were arrested on charges they perpetrated a foreign-exchange investment scam
in which victims were promised guaranteed returns but, in reality, had their
funds stolen.
Both are believed to be low-level operatives in the scam
and police are reportedly searching for five others.
D.S.I. Special Operations Chief Prawit Chaibuadaeng said
Prasit’s company operated the now-closed ForexCapital77.us website which
advertised guaranteed returns of 2 percent daily on U.S. dollar currency
trading. Victims were invited to try the scheme with an investment of just
3,000 baht and all were given their promised returns.
The scammers then approached the happy “investors” again
and asked them to invest 300,000 baht. More than 100 did, but Prawit said
the suspects then absconded with the funds.
