The Thai Polo and Equestrian Club turned pink for the second time as international teams came out to compete to raise money and awareness about breast cancer.

Pink was the theme of the day during the fashion show.

The Feb. 20 “Pink Polo” match, attended by teams from around the Asia-Pacific region, raised 800,000 baht for the Queen Sirikit Breast Cancer Center at Chulalongkorn Hospital. The Southeast Asia team took the Queen’s Cup, defeating Australia 5.5 to 4.

Nantinee Tanner, managing director of cosmetics firm LBG Co., Ltd. (Thailand) and chairwoman of this year’s tournament, said the event was aimed at getting Thai women to take the threat of breast cancer more seriously.

“I hope that this Pink Polo competition will make all Thai women pay more attention to monitoring and taking care of their breasts, as well as attract the next generation of women equestrians,” Tanner said. “Our hope is to create a Thai polo team to compete at the international level.”

The Pink Polo event was more than just a match, with the entire clubhouse and booths done up in pink. Besides the main polo competition there were games, pony trotting, youth horse-riding competition and a fashion show.

The highlight of the event had guests and celebrities taking to the field for the traditional divot-stomping to replace the grass torn up by the polo players.

Doc Houlind jazzes up the Boathouse

Doc Houlind and his Danish All-Stars keep the crowd’s feet moving.

Dr. Iain Corness
Another sell-out promotion for the dynamic Ottesen family after inviting Doc Houlind and his Danish All-Stars to the Jomtien Boathouse who treated the guests to two nights of swinging traditional New Orleans jazz.

The keyboard player is very special, being the newly married Mrs. Doc Houlind.

Doc Houlind is no stranger to Thailand, having first come to Bangkok 25 years ago to play at the hotel Ib Ottesen was running in the capital. The association between the two has continued over the years, with Ib inviting Douc Houlind many times since then, so it was a welcome back to the Jomtien Boathouse for the (now veteran) musician, and some of his even older jazz musicians.

It was very obvious that New Orleans jazz is still a very popular form of music, with the crowd clapping in appreciation as they kept in time with the music. The keyboard player was very special, being the newly married Mrs. Doc Houlind (a match if not made in heaven, at least made in New Orleans) who worked wonders on Ib Ottesen’s narrow keyboard, accompanied by the saxophonist, banjo player and double bass. However, it was the inimitable form of Doc Houlind himself with his trumpet that kept the audience under his spell.

The Jomtien Boathouse is well known on the Eastern Seaboard for annual promotions such as this, as well as the weekly visits of Thailand’s top Elvis Presley. The ‘stage’ section is air-conditioned, but being on the Jomtien Beach Road, the venue is blessed with the cooling sea breezes, and I enjoyed the ambience on the deck as well as the food, for which the Boathouse has a very good reputation. It is also a family venue, run by the many members of the Ottesen family with Kannikar and Ib always present.

Doc Houlind plays smooth sounds from his trumpet.

A sell-out crowd enjoys the event.
