The Artistic side of the British Chamber
Paul Strachan
The August Eastern Seaboard networking event for the British Chamber
of Commerce Thailand (BCCT) was held at Liam’s gallery on Pratamnak Soi 4.
This was something of an unusual choice of venue, but one that proved to be
most conducive for meeting old and new friends.
(L
to R) Robin Hyde, manager of Business Development for Schenker Relocations,
Simon Matthews, BCCT director and Kerati Chantaraviautlert, director of
sales for Pattaya Marriott Resort & Spa.
The labyrinth like nature of the gallery had members meandering their way
through the never ending levels taking in the wide variety of art that
adorned the walls.
The host and owner of the gallery Liam O’Keefe Ayudhkij spoke to PMTV about
his 46 years in Thailand and how although the gallery was by no means a
license to print money, his passion for art was as strong as ever. Liam was
the founder of Property Care Services here in Thailand, a company that deals
with security, maintenance and cleaning services. However, Liam’s real love
is evident in the works on display in his gallery. His upcoming exhibition
in November will feature an Australian surrealist and original works from
Thai copy artists.
(L
to R) Seraio Loiacono from Simpson Marine and Michael Walls, sales director
of G4S.
In his gallery there are even a few works that verge on political satire
which makes you think that perhaps art is one of the few mediums of free
speech left in Thailand.
There were many familiar faces at the event including Jimmy Howard, Corrie
Bik, Chaophya Park GM Andrew Wood and representatives from the Marriot
Resort and Spa Pattaya, and a bevy of beauties from North Shore Real Estate.
Also Dr Salam Hoshang from Asian University, Buzzcats MD William Gasson,
Chris Thatcher from the Sutlet Group and Robin Hyde from Schenker.
(L
to R) Num, Wayne Hoover and Grittaporn Maneein, assistant sales manager of
Pattaya Marriott Resort & Spa.
There were also some new faces including Michael Walls from Group 4
Security, a global company that deals with all aspects of security, from
personnel, to surveillance cameras and detection sensors that are utilized
by businesses and private residences alike.
Another new face was Richard Fellner who is just setting up his business
here in Pattaya as a Psycho and Sexual therapist, and was using the
networking event as it should be, as a way to get your name about and
promote yourself.
The BCCT itself was well represented including directors Trevor Allen, Simon
Mathews and Greg Watkins.
(L
to R) Trevor Allen, BCCT director and Arnaud Bialecki, managing director of
PCS International.
In an interview Greg spoke about how the chamber liked to vary the venues
that they use for these networking events and that it was good to see some
new faces.
He also spoke about a member survey that the chamber is conducting and about
the intention to deliver the needs of the members.
In Bangkok the chamber holds regular quiz nights that, as ever, mix business
with pleasure. Greg said that if the members down here on the Eastern
Seaboard were interested in such an event then the chamber would gladly
organize it.
All in all it was another successful networking event of behalf of the
British Chamber Thailand. The next will be held at Yorkies in Jomtien on
Friday, September 18

Y.W.C.A. awards 407 scholarships to Pattaya,

Y.M.C.A. Bangkok-Pattaya Center carried out the 20th year of its
“Happy Family Program,” awarding 407 scholarships to Chonburi students and
English dictionaries to their institutions.
Mayor Itthiphol Kunplome and Y.W.C.A. Chairwoman Nittaya Patimasongkroh
presided over the Aug. 25 ceremony.
“Since 1990 the Y.W.C.A. Bangkok-Pattaya Center has organized its Happy
Family Program, which allows us to help those who don’t have enough for
education. They are this country’s future,” Nittaya said.
She noted that the government’s plan for 15 years of free education was
good, but didn’t cover all expenses, such as field trips, lunches,
transportation and learning aids. For that reason, the scholarships can be
very useful.
This year, 407 scholarships were granted to 78 people from Pattaya schools
1-11, 314 students from 31 schools in Chonburi Education Area 3, 12 students
from Banglamung Industrial and Community Education College and three
students from Burapha University, Ramkhamhaeng University, and Rajamangala
Tawan-ok University of Technology for Society.
The Happy Family Program is supported by individuals, associations and
organizations including the Pattaya Sports Club, Rotary Club Marina-Pattaya,
Rotary Club Jomtien-Pattaya, Sikh Association, Thais 4 Life, HHN Thailand
and more.
Donations flow in during Pattaya Gay Festival event at Bruno’s
Elfi Seitz
It had been a while, but the Pattaya Gay Festival again showed at
Bruno’s restaurant why so many turn out to support their AIDS-related
welfare projects.
Jim
Lumsden in full action again.
The always eager Jim Lumsden made this event another big success. Not only
500 baht from each guests’ dinner payment went to the PGF’s AIDS project,
but also lots of money was made with the raffle.
Many celebrities from Pattaya’s finest society came to give their share to
PGF projects, buying lots of lottery tickets which totaled more than 80,000
baht. One sponsor put another 20,000 baht in the big money pot.
Altogether 141,000 baht filled the PGF cash box. This money will be used to
help many HIV and AIDS infected people in the Chonburi area who otherwise
couldn’t afford the necessary medicine.
Members of PGF were very generous giving away lots of nice prizes. Amongst
them a crystal watch from Jim Lumsden, and beautiful sets of earrings, gold
chains and rings came from Honest Gems.
Patrick
Zellweger, Fredi Schaub and Jim Lumsden giving out the raffle prizes.
The guest chef at Fredi Schaub’s Bruno’s Restaurant once again did a
fantastic job and prepared a wonderful menu. I couldn’t say what tasted
better, the Atlantic salmon, the cannelloni filled with chicken ragout or
the Australian beef which melted on the tongue.
Some people will say again that such welfare events won’t bring too much.
This might be, but as one can see it brought in this case a lot of money
which is used to help the many, many AIDS infected people in Chonburi and we
all have to say a big thank you to the PGF.
A visit to Saranya Hair Studio
Thai salon with a European twist
Elfi Seitz
Saranya Furlong, the owner of the Saranya Hair Studio, is a real
Thai, just one married to an Englishman.
Saranya went to vocational school in Chachoengsao to learn to be a
hairdresser. Later on, she went to Chonburi to open her own successful
beauty shop before deciding to move to Pattaya to do something totally
different. She opened a boutique in which she later met her husband.
Together they moved to London, where Saranya worked for a few years for the
famous hair stylist Tony & Guy to complete her education the European way.
Later on she opened her own shop in London, which became very popular.
When her husband decided to move back to Pattaya, she dutifully followed
him, yet being bored after a while on July 13 she opened her new “Saranya
Hair Studio.”
The name is actually an understatement, since she not only cuts the hair of
men and women, colors, blow-dries, grooms, highlights, straightens and
perms, helps it to grow better, puts it up in a nice hairstyle or makes
special hair designs for brides, but gives facials as well.
Ladies - and gentlemen - who like to take care of their appearance can get
all the help they need. Saranya only uses English brands, like No. 7. The
over one hour facials, done by a professional cosmetician, offer cleansing,
a real fantastic massage and a mask. The cost is only 499 baht. The
cosmetician helps to choose the creams which are soothing for one’s skin.
Do you think your eyelashes are too short? No problem! In Saranya’s hair
studio they not only cut hair but extend the lashes and the hair if you
wish. Special products help to make the hair grow faster and heal split
ends. Manicure and pedicures are done there and shortly one can have acrylic
nails as well.
Another special offer is that after every fifth session one is given for
free.
The prices are really reasonable even though very good products like
L’oreal, X-tenso, Wella and Shiseido are used.
Most important of all is that Saranya spent many years in Europe and knows
all about European hair and skin. She is able to give Europeans the right
advice and care.
Saranya Hair Salon is located on North Pattaya Road, in a shopping complex
between Best Supermarket and Fairtex Hotel: tel. 085-923-9971; email:
saranyahairstudio @gmail.com.
