first half of their match at the Princess Sirindhorn Stadium, Sunday,
August 9. High-flying Chonburi FC won the game 2-0 through goals from
Arthit Sunthornpit and Kone Mohamed to keep them 4 points clear at the
top of the Thai Premier League standings. Pattaya United drop to 12th
place in the league on 19 points following this loss to their local

Simon Philbrook crowned Jackalope Open champ
The Canadian Jackalope Open 2009
Wayne

The day of the 2009 Jackalope Open, Friday, August 7, began with
cloudy skies and the organizing committee were out on the course early
to make sure all was in order. During the morning the 131 golfers
arrived at Burapha Golf Club and registered, then followed that up by
partaking of the traditional Caesar, a Canadian breakfast speciality and
the first chance to get the much awaited 50-50 raffle tickets.
By 11:30 everyone headed out to the golf course ready for the shotgun
start with much anticipation hanging in the air as individuals prepared
their minds towards a good round; of course some of the golfers were
thinking when they would see the beer cart first and when the hot dog
stand would have the mid-round snacks ready.

tournament organizer Mark Gorda.
At 12:00 the shotgun was fired and the golfers were off, a true test of
golf on the narrow fairways. The field moved around A & D courses with
not too many hold ups encountered and after just five hours the first
groups arrived back at the club house. The golfers were treated to a
splendid buffet provided by the staff of Burapha while they waited for
the scores to be tabulated and the winners announced. Prize giving began
with Mark Gorda filling in for Dave Pittman as Emcee, and he did a
sterling job.
The technical awards were presented with the long drives going to Greg
Todd in division 1, Mat Russell in division 2, Craig Davies in division
3, Trevor Marshall in the Rabbits division and Penn in the Ladies
division.

Nearest the pin awards were won by: Moe Deverdenne, Mat Russell Joe St.
Laurent Steve Burrows and Noodle Russell on A3; Paul McNally, Bob
Martin, Volker Esser, and Penn on A6; Barry Traynor, Mike Lord, Paul
Gater, Tom Swanson and Chant Schwulera on D2; Barry Traynor, Andreas
Wegener, Paul Wilkinson and Dang Chinuaporn on D8.
The Rabbits division failed to produce any near pin winners on A6 and
D8. The nearest the keg meanwhile was won by Mike Lord who quickly
gained many new friends.
The Ladies division runner up was Penn with 31. First place in the
Ladies division was claimed by Usa Chaiyosit with 32 points.
In the Rabbits division John Tennick beat out Tom Swanson in a count
back with 40 points for the runner up spot and winning the Rabbits
division was Steve Burrows with 44 points. Some unbelievable points
scored in the Rabbits division this year.

Division 3 third place was won by Greg Todd with 33 points, edging out
Joe St. Laurent in a count back, second place going to Sam Philip with
34 points and first place for the second year in a row was won by Jason
Kerr with an amazing 35 points. Watch for Jason winning this tournament
in the next couple of years.
Division 2 third place was won by Don Head with 36 points, second place
went to Mat Russell with 37 points and first place went to Bob Lindborg
with 38 points.
Division 1 third place went to Thomas Kassemeier beating out Dave
Stockman in a count back with 36 points, second place went to Russell
Exily with 36 points, and in first place for the second year in a row
was Doug Lynch with 38 points.
Doug Lynch also shot the lowest gross score of the day for the second
year in a row with 72, an extremely good round of golf.
Anxious
looks follow the ball.
The Canadian Jackalope Open Championship for 2009 belonged to Simon
Philbrook for amassing a fantastic 42 points on the day.
Following the awards ceremony the 50-50 draw prizes donated by Mark
Gorda, Rob Kennedy, Jameson’s The Irish Pub, Canukville, Brent Hallis
and Neil Sandilands were given out before the much anticipated 50-50
cash draw was made. Another first ever for the Jackalope Open was the
winner of the cash prize donating back his entire share in the amount of
102,700 baht back to the charity and that winner was none other than
Mark Gorda.
On top of his generosity with the 50-50 cash prize, Mark, in his never
ending quest to generate funds for the organizations that benefit from
the tournament, had pledged to donate 1,000 baht for every birdie and
5,000 baht for every eagle scored on the day. That brought in an
additional 25,000 baht.
Thanks go to all the staff at Burapha Golf Club for their continued
excellent service provided on the day. We would also like to thank the
following businesses and individuals who either donated their time and
staff or helped to raise an outstanding amount of 455,100 baht for the

will again be joining with the Jesters Care For Kids to help provide
much needed assistance to the poor or disadvantaged children in the
area.

Stockman edges Mascari in top flight
The IPGC Monthly Medals, August 2009
What had been in the offing for some considerable time,
at last came to fruition on Wednesday, August 5 with the inaugural IPGC
Monthly Medal Competitions held at Phoenix Golf Club over the Lakes and
Ocean courses where a special mix of blue and white tees, set from the now
familiar personalized tee makers, provided a very fair test of golf. With
the standard scratch originally set at 72, the results and excellent quality
of golf that the members played showed that to be a reasonable assessment as
the CSS turned out to be 72 with approximately 33% of the field playing
within two of their handicaps.
August
IPGC Medal winners (L-R): Ian Wilson (Div.3), Nar Hector (Ladies) and Dave
Stockman (Div.1).
Each monthly medal competition will provide three winners in the gentlemen’s
divisions and one from the ladies, who will go forward to the finals to
compete for the Gold and Silver Medals next August. In addition the medals
will also be used to determine the IPGC Gentleman Player of the Year, with
between 1 and 10 points to be won in each division every month, dependant on
final positions, which will then be aggregated for the year to establish the
overall winner.
The requirement by the members for these competitions had been known for
some time, but circumstances had prevented the inception until this month,
this was underscored by the take up by the members, which was such that the
allocated tee times were all taken up within four days of the announcement
by the tournament committee.
The day started with a very smooth registration by the experienced team of
usual suspects and with a two-tee start all the players were through the
tees some ten minutes earlier than anticipated by the organisers and the
pace kept up to a steady rate with the majority of the field back in the
clubhouse in just over fours hours. The weather assisted in making it a
pleasant day’s golf as it stayed fine and mostly overcast with moderate
breezes.
All the competitors played in mixed handicap groups which had been set from
the sign up sheets and therefore had little idea of how they were faring as
their rounds progressed.
It was soon clear at the scorers table that the competition in each division
was going to be fairly tight, and this proved to be the case in the final
analysis.
Divisions 1 and 2 were played in a stroke play format whilst the third
division and ladies were played as Stableford with the splits being set at;
1st division 0 to 10, 2nd division 11 to 18, and 3rd division 19 plus.
Nar Hector took the Ladies Medal with an excellent score of three under as
she returned a 39-point card to win by two from Saranya Riley with Mam Morel
in third place.
Ian Wilson headed the third division with the best of the day 41 points,
just edging out Joe Kubon by a single point and Danny Greer won the count
back with Doug Campbell on the last two holes by 5 to 4 after they had both
finished with Back 9 23, B6 16, B3 7, for third.
The second division was led in by Dannie Larsen by the biggest margin of the
day at three as he went round in two under his handicap. He was followed by
a group of four on one over handicap, topped by Don Nellis with a best 34.5
on the count back with Brian Kelly in third place by virtue of a back three
holes of level fours as Roy Thornton could only manage 13 after they had
both gone 35/24 on the last nine and six holes. Trevor Schirmer just missed
out in the count back with 36.6 after missing a 3-footer on the 17th which
would have placed him second.
In the first division Dave Stockman made up somewhat for his disappointments
of the Club Championship three weeks previously, as he stroked it round in
three under handicap and a gross 74 to just deny the pre-tournament
favourite Steve Mascari, whose gross 73 with a 2 handicap left him adrift by
a slender two shots and having to settle for a creditable second place. Tony
Thorne placed third with a better count back of 35 as Paul Smith carded a
35.5 for the inward half.
The presentations were made at The Haven following the usual fine buffet
provided by Lamyai and her team of internationally acclaimed chefs, all
chased down by a few cold ones.
Chris Knapp, the IPGC Chairman, welcomed the capacity crowd and thanked the
steering committee of Steve Mascari and Russell Exley for putting the whole
enterprise together at such short notice and little time for promotion,
together with the registration and scoring team of Glyn Evans and Stephen
Beard assisted as usual by Russell Exley and the extra starter Russell
Finch. He then passed the microphone to Stephen Beard who announced the
winners while Steve Mascari presented the Medals and sweep winnings.
The evening continued thereafter as even more down-downs were dealt with and
everyone looking forward to the next medals to be held at Pattana on the 1st
of September, for which early registration is advised.

The talented Mr. Ritchie
PSC golf from The Caddyshack

Monday, August 3, Plutaluang N & S
– Stableford
Plutaluang, not everybody’s cup of tea, was the venue for
Monday’s round but still over 20 golfers braved the strange grass and
inconsistent greens. The field was split into two flights with the high
handicappers struggling much more than the lower guys.
Greg
Ritchie was the winner at Plutaluang with 41 points.
In B Flight, 31 points was enough to take third spot for Mel McGowen while
in second place was Mel’s pal and playing partner George Way with 33 points.
Meanwhile up ahead in first place was a first time winner Roger Ribbins with
35 points.
A Flight was a different story with quite a few good scores: Ben Findon,
playing off an extremely low handicap of fifteen, still managed third place
with 34 points. When are the powers that be going to realize that this is
far to low a handicap for a man of Bens golfing ability and return him back
to his seventeen? It’s just not fair that instead of winning almost every
week he now has to settle for the scraps of second and third. Mike Allidi
was second today with a fine 74 gross for his 38 points, but well out in
front was the talented Mr. Ritchie (Greg) with an unbeatable 41 points.
A Flight
1st Greig Ritchie 41pts
2nd Mike Allidi 38pts
3rd Ben Findon 34pts
B Flight
1st Roger Ribbins 35pts
2nd George Way 33pts
3rd Mel McGowan 31pts
Friday, August 7, Green Valley –
Stableford
As usual for a Friday our venue was Green Valley and for the
first Friday in months I had absolutely nothing to moan about: We teed off
on time, there were no hold ups, and the course was in fantastic condition.
Another twenty plus field was split into two flights and in total contrast
to Monday the higher handicappers enjoyed by far a better day.
In B Flight, James Savage recovered from a nightmare start of no points
after two holes to take third place with a battling 36 points. Les Hall came
in second with a fine 38 points, losing on a count back to Mel McGowen. What
a day for Aussie Mel, not only taking his first win in his last round before
returning to Perth, but then being able to celebrate his win by watching the
Australian cricket team skittle England out for a little over a hundred.
In A Flight some horrendous scores meant that Ben Findon, still playing off
his low handicap of fifteen, took third place with 33 points. In second
place was Bruce Tollitt with 34 points, just losing out on count back to
everybody’s favourite German, Helmut Hebstreit.
A Flight
1st Helmut Hebstreit 34pts
2nd Bruce Tollitt 34pts
3rd Ben Findon 33pts
B Flight
1st Mel McGowen 38pts
2nd Les Hall 38pts
3rd James Savage 36pts

Buckingham top scores on first visit to Rayong County Club
PSC golf from the Café Kronborg
Peter Blackburn & Dave Richardson
Monday, August 3, Rayong
Country Club – Stableford
This was the first event at Rayong Country Club (formerly known as
Great Lake) for Café Kronborg. We had a huge group of 20 starters on the day in
two flights, with the cut at handicap 18. All enjoyed the course which gave up
some very good scores but there is still a lot of work to be done to bring it up
to speed, however, at the current conditions the price is a steal.
The A Flight was won by Icelander Kristin Helgason (who always posts a good
score here) with 39 points. In second place on a count back from Doug Maiko and
Ted Morris was Marcel Witttwer with 37 points. Commiserations to Ted as there
was no prize for fourth but well played anyway.
B Flight was a real U.K. affair with Englishman Graham Buckingham taking out
first prize with the excellent score of 42 points. A long way behind in second
place was our old Irish mate Kevin Dynan on 37 points who just edged out my old
Scottish mate Henry O’Brien on a count back.
Thursday, August 6,
Green Valley – Stableford
A baker’s dozen departed Café Kronborg for a stableford event at the
Rayong Green Valley Country Club. We had a late tee off time after eleven but
managed to get off about 40 minutes early. The course on the day was in fine
condition but the greens were not very receptive, regardless of from where you
were approaching the green.
As a result of the difficult greens there was just 1 golfer breaking par and
that was the unemployed Neil Skilton who took out first prize with 38 points. In
second place with 33 points was Marcel Wittwer (look out Marcel – Blacky’s back
on Monday!) and taking out third prize on a count back from Doug Maiko who
finished fourth was Dave Neal with 30 points.
Thompson tackles the sand trap
PSC golf from The Three Sisters Bar
Pattaya Country Club again hosted the Three Sisters Group this 4th
of August. The turnout was just a bit sparse as it is believed that
a considerable number of regulars could no longer handle
perforated-sand filled greens.
Tuesday
winner Bill Thompson (left) with runner up Herbie Ishinaga
Putts aimed toward the hole were seen bouncing erratically or
getting bogged down with a circle of sand. Both balls and putters
had to be frequently cleaned of adhering sand. Oh well, hopefully
nature will provide lots of rain to wash the sand away and bring
back great greens.
Back at Caddy Shack II Herbie Ishinage came through with really good
pork loin sandwich makings as well as assorted snacks. There was no
lack of beverages on hand.
A tally of the cards showed Bill Thompson coming in at the top with
37 points followed by Herbie Ishinage with 35.
‘The Wireless’ has been switched off
PSC golf from Lewiinski’s
Sunday, August 2, Green Valley -
Stableford
A Flight
1st Neil Cameron (12) 39pts
2nd Bob Newell (7) 38pts
3rd Ian Grout (7) 36pts
B Flight
1st Kevin Hamilton (18) 41pts
2nd Colin Davis (15) 41pts
3rd Pierre Bietry (15) 41pts
Red Flight
1st Jum Karagit (23) 35pts
2nd Kathy Doddy (17) 34pts
Near Pins: #2 Ian Wilson, #9 Barry Cooke, #12 Mike Craighead, #16
Adrian Schmidt.
In what was scheduled as a warm up for next weeks medal, a fair contingent
of golfers battled through the unusually slow greens and it was Kevin ‘still
off eighteen’ Hamilton who prevailed to take top spot for the day, but it
needed a three way count back to separate Kevin from the Donkey in second
and the Magician in third.
The
‘Wireless’ himself.
The red flight was won by the lovely Jum Karagit on 35 points, followed by
the equally beautiful Kathy Doody one shot behind.
Winning the senior flight was part time golfer Neil Cameron, posting a very
impressive 39 points. Seamless Newell came in second with a solid 38 points
to leave Ian ‘giza fag’ Grout to round out the flight.
Back at the ranch the biggest grin of all belonged to Co. Dublin’s Patrick
Regan who claimed a handsome 2’s pot.
Tuesday, August 4, Laem Chabang - Stableford
1st Merle Humpreys (19) 40pts
2nd Raspie Matsie (21) 37pts
A small gang of Lewiinski’s best traveled to the immaculate Jack Nicklaus
designed Laem Chabang A and C nines.
Merle Humpreys triumphed with a spectacular 40 points, followed home by
Raspie Matsie who was three shots adrift for second spot.
Four ‘2’s were posted by Raspie Matsie, Colin Davis, and a brace for the old
vet himself Jim Bracket, which included a superb eagle on the par four
seventh on B course.
Wednesday, August 5, Rayong C.C. – Stableford
1st Steven Kilner (21) 40pts
2nd Bob Newell (7) 34pts
After hearing good reports from other golf venues, Lewiinski’s decided to go
and play the former Great Lakes course now renamed Rayong Country Club, and
they were in for a great surprise as the course was in good shape, barring
the back nine greens which had recently been cored. The club house has also
been cleaned up so all in all it was great value for money.
On with the game, Steven Kilner took the course apart, firing a mammoth 40
points, for the day’s man of the match title. Seamless was a hefty six shots
back to record his double second place this week.
Jim Bell and Chas Holdaway split the ‘2’s pot.
Friday, August 7, Greenwood - Stableford
1st Peter Ring (22) 38pts
2nd Seamus Cotter (9) 36pts
3rd Jimmy Day (13) 35pts
When Irish eyes are smiling, well they were today as the top four golfers
were from the Emerald Isle.
After hearing about Smoking Joe’s victory last week and the fact that Joe
had left his boxing gloves at home, Rocky Ring decided to give it a try and
leave his size nines at home, and would you believe it Rocky went on to
produce the top score of the day, 38 blisteRing points. Seamus VC, soon to
be the big C, was two sorry shots adrift for second. This left Jimmy ‘The
Lepricorn’ Day to close out the flight.
Just to make sure it was an all Irish affair, the President was a shot off
the pace. The only consolation to the rest of the boys was that the ‘new man
of leisure’ Mick Shrosbree won the ‘2’s pot.
Back at Olinski’s it was an extra St Pats night.
Note: Lewiinski’s is situated on Pattaya Land Soi 1, Beach Road Soi
13/3 near to Walking Street. Anyone wishing to play with us just pop in, and
add your name to the list or call Bob on 0898260764. Transport is provided.
Carmody cards lifetime best
PSC golf from Tropical Bert’s
Thomas Cotton &
Derek Brook
Tuesday, August 4, 2009, Pattana - Stableford
Well, aren’t we all glad the stress and excitement of
deciding the “Alan Bolton Golfer of the Year” is over and we can just
have a relaxing day of golf? Fortunately, Tiger Woods did not
participate and we were able to keep the winner to a Pattaya resident,
and more particularly a customer of Tropical Bert’s. So this Tuesday
morning, we trotted out to Pattana, one of our favourite courses to have
a little fun, far from the bustle of Soi 6 and the environs of Tropical
Bert’s.
Tuesday’s
top trio from Pattana: Mashi Kaneta, Colin Cronin and Steve Compton
We rendezvoused at the first tee and a fateful decision was taken by our
able Captain, to play off the yellow tees. This was an accommodation to
the soon-to-be octogenarians.
Fortune favours the brave, and as luck would have it, several of the B
course yellow tees were co-located with the reds (lady’s tees) and all
the C course tees were co-located with the reds. So this day would
favour the short and straight hitters, which put the long and errant to
disadvantage (i.e our captain and the usual bandits).
Our captain calculated that off the red tees the course was playing like
a par 70 instead of par 72 from the white tees. So on this day we had
some long unsung names creeping into the leader board with Mashi Kenata
coming in first on count back ahead of Colin Cronin and Steve Compton.
Near Pins were claimed by Dave Jones, Frank Pilkington, Colin Cronin and
Steve Compton.
Friday, August 7, Rayong Country Club - Stableford
After two successful visits to this course in July, our group
was anxious to get back and tackle the Faldo design again. We had
several new participants as word of the good condition of this course
seems to be spreading. In fact a group from Jomtien were also at the
venue for a competition, so the parking lot was filling up.
With the friendly staff and adequate facilities we were off the first
tee on time and, while showing the effects of annual type maintenance we
see every year, the course was in good condition. Our groups were around
in a bit over 4 hours and as the scorecards were handed in, it became
obvious that the guys had come to play today and the scores were very
good: So good in fact that the handicap adjustment procedure was
required for five of the 13 players.
Leading the way with a lifetime best score of 45 points was Don Carmody.
He was followed by Joel Flor with 43 points, Henry O’Brien with 41,
Colin Swann with 40, and Steve Compton with 39. Both Don and Joel are
showing good results from their recent instruction from Scott and some
practice. Well done guys!
Back at Bert’s, with the drinks flowing and some digging into the Friday
fish ‘n chips, the prizes were sorted out and with the help of some
vouchers thrown in by Bob Benda, all five of the best scores were
rewarded for their efforts - and to ease the pain of the handicap cuts.
Near pins on the day were captured by Joel Flor (2), Daryl Evans and
Steve Compton.
Vincenzi produces
storming round at Pattana
Jomtien Golf with the IPGC
Monday, August 3, Pattana – Stableford
Another amazing turnout out for this time of the year with 31 players
out today, which boosted the prize levels up in all divisions. As always at this
course there were some heavy cloud formations in the distance but the caddies’
prediction of rain sometime during the round never materialized, so with a cool
breeze throughout the round, it turned out to be a perfect day.
Nang,
Nit, Nom and Nut enjoy their round at Eastern Star.
Yet again the A course was closed and we encountered the dreaded start on the B
nine, something which pleased all eight groups. The tees today were well forward
and the expectancy of high scores coming in was a topic of conversation for many
of the teams on the course.
The cut in the two divisional stableford competition was made at 1-18 and 19+,
and with 38 points Ian Hart took division 2 ahead of Tony Duthie just one point
behind in second. Coming in third place with 35 points was Kalevi Luukkonen.
Thirty-eight points was good enough in division 1 to give Alex Sala third place,
with Mam Morel finishing in second one point ahead and the winner with an
amazing 43 points was Harry Vincenzi, a great round Harry, well done.
Harry also got the only ‘2’ in division 1 on the second hole on the C course, a
feat repeated by Tony Duthie in the second division.
Near pins went to (Div.1) Keith Hector, Mam Morel, Stuart Thompson and Harry
Vincenzi, and (Div.2) Tony Duthie (2), Ian Hart and Heikki Tehro.
Friday, August 7, Eastern Star – Stableford
It was another partially cloudy day on Wednesday with a cool breeze
coming off the coast which made a few holes playing into the wind a little more
difficult.
There were two rollovers in both divisions in the 2’s from the previous two
Fridays so it was all to play for today. As we have said before the course
condition is improving every week and should be spot on for our home I.P.G.C.
monthly medal fixture the first week of October.
There were 26 players out today and the cut in division 1 was at 10-21 and
division 2 at 22+.
Thirty-five points was enough to win both divisions with Tom Sathrum taking
division 1 after beating Cully Monks on a 23/16 back nine count back. Neil
Gamble captured third place on 33 points.
There was another count back in division 2 with Barry Rawlinson’s 18/15 beating
Miss Nit, and in third place came Jimmy Johnson with 34 points.
There were no two’s today in either division so a worthwhile purse next Friday
for all.
Mr. “2” makes it a double
Golf from the Travellers Rest
Barry Hooper
I made mention in a report at the end of last month of there
having being no 2’s made for a number of weeks at Phoenix and that Ted
Senior had broken the spell by making one, along with a couple of others
in the same week, and promptly named him Mr “2”.
Saturday’s winners: John
Lay, Billy Fitzgerald and Gerhard Burger.
However he seems to have now stopped taking 2’s (none
this week) and has gone even better by taking a double win; one at
Pattana (Monday) with thirty-seven points and the other at Phoenix
(Thursday) with an identical score. Well Done Ted!
Monday, August 3, Pattana – Stableford
1st Ted Senior (13) 37pts
2nd Guy Fraser (10) 35pts
3rd Ito Akitoshi (7) 35pts
4th Eddie Townsend (15) 35pts
Pattana B & C nines were the challenge for the outing Monday. We had a
fair number in attendance and it turned out to be a very good day and a
win for Mr.”2". I am referring of course to Mr. Ted Senior, who has
become infamous for making 2’s. But not so this time as he swapped the
‘2’s for a win, and the first of two in the week.
Ted found at the end of his round that he was two points up on three
other players who had to fight it out with count back thirty-fives: Guy
Fraser edged it with twenty on the back nine for second over Ito
Akitoshi with seventeen and Eddie Townsend with fifteen.
There were two ‘2’s from Ray Allison and Richard Talbot.
Tuesday, August 4, Treasure Hill - Stableford
1st Gerald Thwaites (10) 31pts
2nd Guy Fraser (10) 28pts
3rd George Robinson (9) 27pts
Tuesday was a trip to Treasure Hill and we had not been there in some
time so it was a welcome return. A moderate turnout on the day (not
everybody likes this course I have never understood why) and so it was
one division with places to third.
I personally was not in attendance but the course must have played hard
judging by the scores returned. Thirty one was the winning score and
that came from Gerald Thwaites (not reported that name in some while).
Three back in second was Guy Fraser at twenty-eight, maybe we should
refer to him as Mr. second, twice in two days. In third was George
Robinson who could not find the form he had on the previous Saturday and
came home with twenty-seven.
Two ‘2’s recorded from Guy Fraser and Gerhard Burger.
Thursday, August 6, Phoenix Ocean & Mountain -
Stableford
1st Ted Senior (13) 37pts
2nd Alan Evans (23) 36pts
3rd Billy Fitzgerald (16) 36pts
4th Mod Chaviraksa (10) 35pts
5th Bob St. Aubin (13) 35pts
It was yet another visit to our regular Thursday venue of Phoenix (Ocean
and Mountain) and with a very good turnout of participants. The course
was excellent as always.
Scoring was not so high this week, Mr. “2” (Ted Senior) did it again for
his double of the week and again with thirty-seven points, however I
note there is still no change to his handicap (13) so he must be
sneaking in with just the right scores. Investigation required I think.
Second and third went to count back between Alan Evans and Billy
Fitzgerald (he is becoming quite a regular these days) both with
thirty-six but Alan edged it with one more on the back nine, eighteen to
seventeen. In fourth was Mod Chaviraksa who also edged out Bob St. Aubin
on count back, again it was eighteen to seventeen. Bad luck Bob.
Only the one ‘2’ and that was from Matt Gibbons.
Saturday, August 8, Green Valley - Stableford
1st Billy Fitzgerald (16) 35pts
2nd Gerhard Burger (15) 33pts
3rd John Lay (12) 33pts
4th Mike Moreton (17) 32pts
We had a poor turnout for a Saturday but the quality of play was up to
its usual high level.
One player decided that Thursday was a warm up for better things. I am
of course referring to Billy Fitzgerald who went two better than
Thursday for a great win with thirty-five points and two more than
Gerhard Burger. A new player visiting with us, Gerhard who took a ‘2’ on
Tuesday was second with thirty-three after winning the count back over
Jon Lay.
There was only one ‘2’ today and that was from Eamonn Murtagh.
John Squitiero claims a return fare
IPGC golf from The Haven
Monday, August 3, Green Valley - Stableford
1st John Squitiero 40pts
2nd Grant Cadell 40pts
3rd Jens Gunnarsson 40pts
4th Shuichi Kodaka 38pts
5th Trevor Schirmer 37pts
6th Russell Exley 37pts
Playing at Green Valley on a Monday can sometimes be a bit of a lottery as
to where the tees are positioned after the weekend and this Monday was one
of those days. Although some of the tees were in the usual positions, many
were placed in forward areas of the tees therefore making for a
foreshortened course that showed up in the assessment of the CSS at 71.
John Squitiero celebrated his last game out of Soi 13 with a win, although
it took a mighty effort over the inward half to win the count back from
Grant Cadell, as he just squeaked in ahead by a margin of 23 to 22. Grant
then had to win a count back with Jens Gunnarsson for second place, which he
did as Jens could only scrape together 21 and settled for third place.
Shuichi Kodaka was another to have a good day with a two under handicap
round that secured him fourth spot by a shot from Trevor Schirmer and
Russell Exley, with Trevor getting the better of the back nine 19 to 17.
There were no ‘2’s in the second division and again surprisingly also none
in the first division.
Before presenting the prizes the Doc welcomed back Peter Carroll together
with Harry and Saranya Riley and there was also an early farewell to Mike
Dabanovich and John Squitiero, the former to stir up a few suds and the
latter who is returning to Las Vegas to clip a few tourists in his cab.
Friday, August 7, Greenwood - Stableford
1st Graham Davis 37pts
2nd Shuichi Kodaka 33pts
3rd Alec Hoare 33pts
4th Rick Holmes 32pts
Greenwood is another course where the tee placings can be a source of some
dismay, especially when they are to be found so far forward that one would
be excused for thinking that one was playing from the reds, but this day was
not one of those, as the scores clearly demonstrated and the CSS evinced as
it moved out to 74 for the day.
Graham Davis showed that his 7 handicap has been well earnt, as he led in a
completely different set of scores from the last outing by a clear three
points and turned out to be the only player to make the grade in the CSS
assessment. He displayed a range of sweet tee shots, extremely competent
second shots and a very tidy short game as he stroked it round in 78 gross
to complete his best round of this trip and his first win.
Shuichi Kodaka made up for a disappointing showing in the IPGC Medal
Competition with his second placement of the week, as he took the count back
over Alec Hoare with a better back nine of 17 to 13, leaving Alec to settle
for third place.
Once again there were no 2’s in the second division but Takeshi Hakozaki had
the only one in the first division to claim the massive (at least for the
top division) quadruple rollover, although it took some doing to prise the
money from the wizened claw like grip of the stakeholder and had to be taken
in two tranches.
Back at The Haven the Doc welcomed new member Francie McGuigan and also
welcomed back Joe McArdle, Robert Hanson, Ger Lodge, Fred O’Connor and Alec
Hoare.
Following the recent changes in the make up of the IPGC venues there have
been several requests that the Green Valley and other members be catered for
on a Sunday at Green Valley. This has now been attended to and a weekly
competition has been added on a Sunday starting at around 11 a.m. The day is
jointly organised by Steve Mascari and Russell Exley and players can sign up
via the usual venues.
Campbell claims the Pacco Pot
PSC Soi Kanoi Golf Group
Neil Duncan
Tuesday, August 4, Bangpra (White tees) - Stableford
Bangpra is always a popular venue for the group and we found the
course up to its usual high standard this day, although exactly how the
revamped 10th can be ranked stroke eighteen remains a mystery.
Ian
Campbell was the winner at Plutaluang on Thursday with a fine 38 points..
Joined by newcomer Lamduan Keddie we were started ahead of schedule and Rob
Gandley embraced his two shot manual cut to card the winning score of 33
points. Willy Nachbur defied the effects of a heavy night before to take
runner up spot on 32 points whilst Eddie Martin and David Johnson came in
3rd and 4th with 31 and 30 points respectively.
The near pin bonuses were evenly distributed and Ze Panzer sank the longest
first putt on the 18th green.
Thursday, August 6, Plutaluang S & N (White tees) -
Stableford
It is always a pleasure to play this great venue and fortunately
the weather remained benign for this time of year.
Ian Campbell earned himself a two day manual handicap cut by carding a
splendid 38 points and winning the intermittently played for but most
splendid chromium plated Pacco Pot. The four ‘place’ prizes went to Ken
Little, Mike King, David Clamp and yours truly in descending order. The
technical dividends were evenly distributed.
Our chum Aka O’Reilly has a serious case of PMA (Positive Mental Attitude)
as was emphasized recently when he remarked that, as he sees it, one of the
advantages of becoming senile is that it becomes possible to hide your own
Easter eggs. Another advantage being that it doesn’t matter which disk you
put in the DVD machine because you are guaranteed to have never seen the
movie before.
Note: Any golfers seeking to play with our group that wish to know
about the group’s format please phone Neil on 089 511 0575.
Smith signs off
on a winning note
PSC golf from The Bunker
Monday, August 3, Treasure Hill -
Stableford
Treasure Hill isn’t usually one of Paul Smith’s favourite
courses, but it was the last game he could play in before a brief return to
the UK and he certainly made the most of it. Paul won the stableford
competition by two points ahead of Gerry Cooney who’s starting to find a bit
of form after injury, beating Rab on a count back to take the runner up
spot. Meanwhile Jim Wooler had a steady round to finish in fourth place with
31 points.
Mashi
Kaneta was the winner at Phoenix on Friday.
In the Near Pin competition only three greens were hit and the prizes were
claimed by Paul Smith, Frank Dante and Geoff Parker.
1st Paul Smith (3) 34pts
2nd Gerry Cooney (11) 32pts
3rd Rab McDonald (13) 32pts
4th Jim Wooler (22) 31pts
Wednesday, August 5, Plutaluang - Stableford
July ‘golfer of the month’ Rab was third on Monday and he got in
the frame again today, keeping up his steady form and hoping for another
monthly trophy. Unfortunately he lost on a count back to Eddie Martin and
had to settle for second place. There was a count back for third place too
where newcomer Reid Sheftall, playing off scratch, just shaded it ahead of
Lee Butler who had to settle for fourth place.
Near pin winners on the day were Geoff Cox, Geoff Parker, Lee Butler and
Reid Sheftall.
The Bunker Boy’s haven’t played the Thai Royal Navy course for some time and
if the starter continues to “slide in” five and six-balls at the tenth tee
it will be a while before we play there again as it turned into a five hour
plus round of golf which isn’t good, especially in the low season!
1st Eddie Martin (16) 37pts
2nd Rab McDonald (13) 37pts
3rd Reid Sheftall (0) 36pts
4th Lee Butler (20) 36pts
Friday, August 7, Phoenix - Medal
Yet again Rab McDonald was in the frame but, unfortunately he
could only finish third beating Geoff Parker on a count back. Reid Sheftall
playing off scratch took second place with a gross 71 but it was Mashi who
was the star today, winning with a three under par net 69.
Near Pins went to Bruce, PJ Redmond, Frank Dante and Mashi.
Déjà vu for Chapman & Hole
PSC Golf from Mulligans Lakeside
Mulligans Lakeside enjoyed two fine courses this week: on
Tuesday we visited Emerald and on Thursday travelled up the 331 to
Greenwood. Both golf courses were in great condition and the weather was
ideal on the two days.
Tuesday, August 4, Emerald - Stableford
It was a case of déjà vu for two players as they took the honours
at both venues. On Tuesday at Emerald, John Chapman (25) gained first spot
with 32 points whilst Ken Hole (14) secured second place with a round of 29.
Both players also shared the spoils on the nearest the pin holes.
John
Chapman and Ken Hole with Lala, Tooay and Patchalee from Mulligans staff.
Joining us on the day were two new players to Mulligan’s, James Smith and
Willie Deamer
Thursday, August 6, Greenwood - Stableford
Thursdays round at Greenwood off the white tees produced improved
rounds of 33 points for John Chapman and 30 for Ken Hole as they came home
in first and second respectively. The difficult par threes only produced two
winners for near pins, those being Ray Ryan and “Tommo”
Note: Mulligans Lakeside plays golf on Tuesday & Thursday (we
sometimes change to accommodate a Thai Holiday). Presentations are made at
the course on Tuesday, with Mulligans Lakeside hosting the Thursday
presentation. We are a friendly bunch so please feel free to join us for
some good golf and great banter.

Monday, August 3, Burapha - Stableford
An outstanding front nine from Don Pavlovic, scoring 24 points
(level par), set up a comfortable win in Div A by four and the top score of
the day with 39 points. Playing C & D from the tough blue tees, only one
other of the 30 Outbackers, Mike Larsen (36pts), was able to match his
handicap to win Div B; although there were quite a few near misses with
Bernie Stafford (2nd Div A), Rosco (3rd Div A) and the in form Steve Milne
(2nd Div B), all scoring 35 points.
Happy
days with Bob St Aubin and the Sugarman.
It was a welcome back to Bobby Driggs, who’s always got plenty to talk
about, and to Mark Penfold of Thailand Golf Tours, based down in Aus, with
his two mates Danny Maisano and John Scarlett.
There were three ‘2’s - two conventional from Kevin Moraghan (thanks for the
drink) and Bernie Stafford - the other one coming on the par four 16th where
Mark Penfold hit a 1 iron just off the green to the left and then chipped in
from about 20ft. Well done Mark!

Tuesday, August 4, Pattaya C.C. - Stableford
A good turnout of 19 Outbackers at the local course that was
otherwise pretty void of golfers, giving way to an early tee off and a four
hour round.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with this course and there are many that
love playing here, but it has to be said that it is subject to a lot of
criticism and today deservedly so. Fair enough that the greens have to be
cored and sanded, which did make the putting and chipping a complete
lottery, but there is no need to leave little piles of sand all round the
edges and in places not even bother to sweep the surplus sand off the
greens. The management were so advised and did say they would look into the
matter.
Nevertheless there were some great scores out there, not least by three of
some of the oldest guys playing golf in Pattaya, namely Arthur Bailey
(again!) 40 points, first in Div B, followed by Geoff Moodie (39pts) second
and Norm Martin (37pts) in third. In Div A, Ian Covill beat ‘the General’ on
count back, both on 37 points, with Bob Pearce (35pts) taking the final
place on the podium.
A special welcome today also to Chris from a well known local bar (it’s a
secret which one) who was having his first ever outing on a golf course.
There were two ‘2’s from Geoff Moodie and Jack Moseley.
Div A (0-18)
1st Ian Covill (15) 37pts
2nd Jack Moseley (10) 37pts
3rd Bob Pearce (12) 35pts
Div B (19+)
1st Arthur Bailey (21) 40pts
2nd Moodie Geoff (28) 39pts
3rd Norm Martin (24) 37pts
Wednesday, August 5, Rayong C.C. - Stableford
Formerly known as Great Lakes, this Sir Nick Faldo designed
course has been rediscovered as Rayong Country Club. The entrance area and
changing rooms have been given some new floor tiles and a coat of paint,
whilst the old pro shop on the left has disappeared. The green fee is
extremely reasonable and the access roads have all been resurfaced,
whichever way you go, making a journey of no more than thirty minutes from
the Outback.
It was a last minute decision to switch venues from the scheduled Phoenix to
Rayong C.C. as many regular Outbackers were concerned that play would be
slow following a large field playing in their monthly medal.
Apologies to those who couldn’t be so advised (please leave a contact tel.
no. when you sign up), but most of the 13 Outbackers who did play, were not
disappointed.
Considering the course has been subject to neglect for a couple of years, it
is clear the new management have come a long way and much work has been done
(and is still being done) to bring the course up to scratch. The greens need
more time to get back to their former selves and you had to putt the ball
firmly for it to have any chance of holding its intended line; another month
or so should see a big improvement from their current hollow tining and
sanding.
Those who had played the course before, remembered the holes, particularly
the fourth hole (index 1) and those that hadn’t thought the layout was
interestingly different and definitely worth a revisit.
Back at the ranch when the results had been calculated, Bob St Aubin & the
Sugarman headed the field, both with 36 points, three clear of three more
players with 33. Bob got the nod over Sugar on count back, as did Bruce
McAdam get the better of Jum and David Day.
There were no ‘2’s (hardly surprising) so the pot was added to the prize
money down to fifth place.
1st Bob St Aubin (13) 36pts
2nd Sugar Ray Handford (17) 36pts
3rd Bruce McAdam (20) 33pts
4th Jum Karagit (21) 33pts
5th David Day (16) 33pts
Thursday, August 6, Green Valley - Stableford
Thirteen Outbackers at Green Valley today and the Sugarman was
going for his third game in a row, following up his second place at Rayong
Country Club on Wednesday. However, it didn’t happen for him out there this
time as he finished way down the leaderboard, giving way for Rosco, who was
also having his third game this week and doesn’t usually play this course,
to take the top spot with 35 points.
Second place went to Gary Saunders on count back from his playing partner,
Chris Ronnblad, both on 34 points, and another member of that group, Alan
Campbell, came in fourth with 33.
There were three ‘2’s from Chris Ronnblad, Geoff Doody and Sugar Ray.
1st Rosco Langoulant (13) 35pts
2nd Gary Saunders (21) 34pts
3rd Chris Ronnblad (20) 34pts
4th Alan Campbell (7) 33pts
Friday, August 7, Laem Chabang - Stableford
After cries that this course is too short from the ‘whites’, the
26 Outbackers playing the A & B nines were left to make their own choice as
to which tee they played from. 16 of them elected for the blue tees,
starting from the daunting box behind the cart path on Mountain (A1), but
there are no exact figures available if many balls found the fairway.
Mark Penfold was the only player to match his handicap with a fine 36 points
(76 gross), with some notable other results, including the fast improving
Steve Milne (34pts off 15), Dave Day on the same score (off 16) and three
more players all with 33 points; Mark Joshua & Pat Regan (both of whom have
already been cut a shot during the current h’cap period) and finally Briany
Christie playing off h’cap 1. Nice to see you back, Briany.
The remaining 10 players that took on the whites were headed by Jim Brackett
(40pts), who seems to be alternating between a good round followed by one
he’d rather forget; with a newbie to the Outback, Aspen Christoffersen from
Norway, just behind on 39 points and Bruce Milner (who raced round in about
3 hours) back in third with 37.
There were four ‘2’s from Mark Penfold & Pat Regan (blues) and Jim Brackett
& Bernie Stafford (whites).

Happy Hurley at Greenwood
IPGC Pattaya Golf Society at Rabbi’s Elephant Bar
During a hectic week, the Pattaya Golf Society travelled to
Greenwood on Thursday, August 6, to play a stableford competition over the C
and A nines. Being only the day after the inaugural IPGC Monthly Medal
event, the field was reduced but there was enough quality there to have a
meaningful competition.
The course was well set up and the greens were very quick, as often they are
at this popular course. Last minute entrant Bob Watson settled well and
scored 31 points for third place, only two behind Masashi Iizumi’s 33
points. The winner, by a huge margin, was Richard Hurley and his 42 points
bore much of the “Happy Gilmore” syndrome with balls being propelled at
great velocity to all parts of the course, occasionally accurately! Such was
his round that the eighteen handicapper produced the day’s best gross as
well.
There were no birdie ‘2’s on the racing greens and the Booby Bevy went to
rookie Peter Allen, playing his first round with the group, as the clubs he
hired for the event were returned to Rabbi with a headless five-iron. The
golf is certainly never dull with the PGS!
Success for Sathrum
The Pattaya Golf Society travelled to Eastern Star in Ban Chang
on Saturday, August 8, for the first time in many months to play a
stableford competition on the course which has suffered, and still is
suffering from extensive repairs to green and bunker fringes. The work has
been successful to the point that it is now possible to play a meaningful
competition there, but the course is light years away from the pristine
condition we all enjoyed there a few years ago. Hopefully it will be back by
the start of high season.
Chris Voller found a return to form after some recent drab rounds by his
high standards, his 37 points giving him third place. Larry Bland fired
another sub-par round amassing 38 points, this time for second place, whilst
Jomtien Golf regular Tom Sathrum gathered 41 points on his home course to
take victory on his debut round with the PGS.
Tom and Chris were joined by Ronnie Ramsay in a share of the ‘2’s pot and
Aussie Bob Wighton, playing his first competition round with PGS in more
than four years, received the Booby Bevy after a first nine total of only
seven points was followed by nineteen on the back. It is always good to
welcome back old friends at Rabbi’s in Soi Buakhao on a golf day.
Six weeks remaining and
Café Kronborg still in front
Pattaya Sports Club Bowling League
Kran Nielsen bowled a 530 series to lead her first placed
Café Kronborg team to a three point win over Swethai. Sala Thai Restaurant
meanwhile gained one point on Café Kronborg after they won all four points
from Jack Tar. Bill Gibson led Sala Thai with a 520 series and Mai Munsitha
was best for Jack Tar with a 530.
A
smiling Leo Kretscher, who will soon be 75 years old, was the only 200
bowler of the week.
Indiana moved from sixth to third place after winning three points from
Green Chilli and FW Post 9876 moved into fourth after winning two points
from Canada.
Sabai Sabai Friday made a big move up the standings from tenth to sixth
place after winning all four points from Brother D, who are now sliding down
the standings. Nok Kennedy rolled a 530 series for Sabai.
Leo Kretscher bowled the day’s best games with a 202 and 222 games, 583
series, to lead Bavaria to a three point win over Café Ole. Morn Mack had a
530 series and Tue Amphanon rolled a 531 for Café Ole.

This week’s position comes from my match with a certain Mr. Brown. Match to
9, score is 5 for black and 3 for white. Black on roll, who opted to double.
Mr. Brown went into the think tank for a bit and finally passed and did not
accept the double.
At the time, it was my inclination this may not be a double, let alone a
double/pass. So, I put the position in to the last say on backgammon Snowie,
the neural network program that plays the game at the strongest level. Here
is the position and results.
2.3% 21.0% 66.0%
34.0% 7.4% 0.4%
A quick explanation of the
numbers above is this: Black on roll wins 66% of the games and 21% of the
66% are gammons while 2.3% are backgammons, triple game. And white wins 34%
of the games with 7.4% being gammons (double game) and .4% backgammons.
Bridge in Paradise: by Neil Robinson
I recently played a match over two evenings in Chiang

little back on this interesting hand. I was sitting North.

Chris dealt and opened with
a weak two diamond bid - a bit unusual because when you have a good major
suit on the side, most people do not open weak in a minor unless their
partner has already passed.
West overcalled two no trump, which actually understates his 20 high card
points (in this sequence, the 2N overcall usually shows a decent 1N
opener). I decided to bid spades, both to get in the way and knowing I
could always escape to diamonds if necessary. After West’s double, I did
indeed escape to four diamonds. West doubled again, understandably in view
of his hand.
West led his two high clubs, and South ruffed the second in hand. He then
crossed to board with the ace of spades and ruffed a low spade in hand. He
ruffed a heart on board and ruffed another spade in hand.
Now, dummy’s spades were all set up. He pulled trumps in two rounds,
leaving a trump on board to get back there to cash the three winning spades
and throw losing hearts from hand. All he lost was the aces of clubs and
diamonds, making four diamonds, doubled into game, with an over trick, for
610 points (Chicago scoring).
A better defence is probably for West to switch to the ace of trumps at
trick two, and then continue with his last trump, to cut down ruffs on
board. However, this makes no difference to the result because the spade
suit can still be set up by taking the ace and ruffing two rounds of spades
in hand. The two remaining trumps on board provide the additional entries
needed to reach board for the second ruff and then to run the good spades.
The most interesting feature of this hand is that it shows the power of
distribution. The North-South hands have only 14 high card points between
them, yet 11 tricks in diamonds are cold against any defence that I can
see. East-West have 26 high card points between them, yet cannot make any
game against good defence (losing two spades and two trumps in four hearts
and losing two spades and one heart in five clubs). Points schmoints, as
they say!

Mickey Mouse Friday Night Dart League
Results & Standings August 7 (week 1)
On the opening night of the duck shooting season, curious
bystanders saw 4 teams down 2 ducks apiece (game & beer), 4 teams shoot wide
and come up dry, and 2 teams get lost in the woods and fail to report their
result.
The Bunker Boys had a cunning plan which left the Sunshine Boys walking home
with heads down and muttering curses to themselves. Stan (Bunker) had thrown
down the gauntlet already by checking out on 132 (T16/T16/D18). Darts Stan.
Mee Chew took both honors off the Blue Mountain; the Coffee Shop Quartet
being a tad light on players had more Mee Chew players in their side then
Mee Chew did! Work that one out.
Defending league champions Lucky Time (hasn’t that got a nice ring to it)
took both game & beer against new recruits Londoner. The OK Corral played
host to the Palmers Crew: Gorgeous George and the Crew outgunning the Posse
to take game & beer.
No one has grassed anyone up this week, not even a stab in the back for
Lance by his own team mates. Is Lance paying his team hush money I ask
myself? And finely, shall we start a ‘Wally of the week’ section? Get your
nominations in. I wonder who will win ‘Wally of the week’ the most times.
Any guesses?
