AustCham Thailand is helping to improve the English language
skills of the children of Ban Huay Mahad School in Rayong, with
recreational English being taught to more than 80 students there.
The sessions began on January 19, with Australian-Thai Chamber of
Commerce executive director Martin Kyle and 10 Thai and foreign
volunteers taking part.
Kyle said this is the fifth year the chamber has been teaching
recreational English to the students, who are in primary school classes
4 to 6 and are aged between five and 12 years.
The lessons are designed to be fun as well as educational, with games
and singing included that help the students to learn new words. Kyle
said that care was taken to teach the youngsters words they would
encounter and use in their everyday lives.
Each session lasts for two hours, with a course taking between three and
four months. Kyle said that the plan is to continue holding the courses
each year. Sessions take place in the morning. The tutors brought books
with them to add to the school library.
Miss Anchit Wongbandit, one of the children on the course, said that
learning a new language was exciting. She said that the tutors make it
all seem to easy, and that she hopes to be able to practise using her
English language skills by talking to foreign tourists.

Mayor
Niran Wattanasartsathorn strikes the gong to open the competition.
Mayor Niran Wattanasartsathorn banged a gong to open the event, and
administrators, councilors, officers, teachers, permanent employees and
hired employees of Pattaya City got down to the serious business of
loosening up and winning - and losing - a few games.
The employees were divided into four teams, namely red, pink, green and
orange, and to spur the participants on a military band assembled from
players from Pattaya City Schools played some stirring music.
The red team and the pink team battled out the finals for the men’s coconut
shell race, with both sides being evenly matched and pink crossing the
finishing line first. The pink team also took the Dutch wife relay race,
having worked out an effective combination of walking and running that had
them way out ahead from the start.
As Mayor Niran said, sport is all about team building, keeping fit, and
having some fun into the bargain. The four teams and their supporters
certainly had a colorful day out.
