Prizes were given by Chaiwat Charoensuk, director of the Tourism Authority of Thailand Central Region Office Region 3, for the winners of a cowboy and cowgirl contest, with Erwann Mahe, general manager of the Mercure Pattaya and Miss Wannaporn Unchaleewiwat, managing director of the Long Beach Garden Hotel and Spa taking home the awards.

The YWCA Bangkok-Pattaya Center held its monthly meeting on January 9 at the Diana Garden Resort, with a New Year party included, and the whole event organized as a Red Night concept, with all committee members present wearing red clothing.
Chairwoman Nittaya Patimasongkroh opened the evening, summing up the activities of the past month and the events lined up for the months of January and February.
Ice cream with snacks was to be served to the pupils of Pattaya School No 1 to coincide with National Children’s Day on January 12. A refuse recycling project has been organized with School No 7 as part of the Love Pattaya Preserve the Environment Project, and on January 26 students will take part in a clean-up of Jomtien Beach.
After the YWCA’s regular (red night) meeting, members gathered in the karaoke room at the Diana Garden Resort for a karaoke party. Sopin Thappajug and Chonburi’s YWCA president, Chitra Wanasin, joined in on the fun, while members sang and danced and the audience was encouraged to pay money to fill up the club’s purse.
The next meeting will be held on February 7 at the Montien Hotel, and will include a Chinese New Year party.

Almonds for charity

Rotary Club of Taksin-Pattaya members have a jolly time selling Spanish Almonds to raise funds for charity.

Rotary Club of
Taksin-Pattaya

Just as they have done for the past 6 years, Rotarians Erwin and Susi Rohner from the Rotary Club of Taksin-Pattaya carried 50 kg of Spanish Almonds to Thailand for the club’s annual Xmas fundraising event. On December 29 we set up our stand in our usual place in Walking Street in front of King Seafood Restaurant belonging to our honorary member Premrudee.
Erwin & Susi started at 7 p.m. sharp and by 8:30 things where in full swing. Many members of our club helped out by coming and spent the whole evening helping to sell the sugar coated almonds (German variety!).
The sale was slower this year than last for two reasons. The event started later than previous years and secondly the main tourist seemed this year to come mainly from Russia, Taiwan and Korea. Nevertheless, we managed to sell out of the almonds during the evening of January 2, 2007.
In spite of the slow start and less days, we are still pleased to report that we managed to raise and impressive 70,000 baht this year for the social fund of our club.

PCEC learns about stem cell research

A busy programme was presented at the Pattaya City Expats Club (PCEC) meeting on Sunday January 14 at Henry J. Bean’s.
The morning got under way with the week’s emcee Richard Silverberg welcoming back the morning’s main speaker, Professor Narong Nimsakul. Professor Narong’s credentials are more then impressive. He is a director at the Institute of Modern Medicine and he was a president of the Thailand Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery. He has performed several operations for Smile Thai Operation Projects giving a new life to people born with congenital deformities.

Professor Narong discusses stem cell research with the Pattaya City Expats Club at Henry J Bean’s.

He is also a director of the Health & Beauty Center at Deja General Hospital, the president of the Anti-Aging Society of Thailand and a consultant in the Department of Plastic Surgery at the Royal Thai Navy’s Somdej Praprinklao Hospital. He is also the president of the International Society for Laser Surgery and Medicine.
Professor Narong spoke to the PCEC several months ago when he described his impressive work with children with cleft palate conditions. This week he discussed stem cell research, which has the potential to help cure many illnesses. For example, it has shown excellent results in the treatment of Down Syndrome.
Professor Narong described how the source of stem cells, which lie dormant in different parts of the body, was from bone marrow, peripheral blood and the umbilical cord. A once in a lifetime opportunity was presented at birth when blood from the umbilical cord could be stored in a blood bank for up to 40 years and used to treat the child and immediate family using stem cell techniques.
Rejuvenation and anti aging can be encouraged by way of a course of Placentin. Several members showed interest in this.
The club was also pleased to welcome Werapath Chanchum, the head of the Public Relations office of the Governor of Chonburi. Werapath welcomed the club members who had chosen to live in Pattaya and offered his help in the event of any issues.
Club Treasurer Max Rommel announced that the organisation of the next the next 3 day club trip to Chantaburi was underway and this is now expected to take place in mid February.
The regular Open Forum was then underway and this proved to be the usual lively and entertaining session. For more information regarding not only PCEC Sunday meetings but also the varied mid week activities, please see the Community Happenings section of Pattaya Mail or, for more details, visit the club’s website at pattayacityexpatsclub.com
