Asian University’s presents their Green Jacket Award
On January 25, Asian University presented its special
‘Green Blazer’ sporting achievement award to Miss Sinsupa Wannasuth (Mink),
a first year BBA student. This was the first time that this prestigious
prize, presented only to students who have achieved the highest distinction
in sports, has been awarded.
Dr
Viphandh Roengpithya (seated), president of Asian University, congratulates
Miss Sinsupa Wannasuth for her Green Jacket achievement.
The idea of a ‘Green Blazer Award’ comes from the coveted green jacket
presented to the champions of the golfing world. The vice president of
administration, Ajarn Panit Nilubol, and the director of sports, Mr. James
Saville, congratulated Mink on winning the bronze medal in the South East
Asia Games.
In the SEA Games, held in the Philippines in 2005, Mink, who has been
sailing, competing and winning for many years, represented Thailand in the
sailing event, competing in the Laser, Radical Class. After her outstanding
achievement, Mink’s father suggested that it might soon be necessary to add
another room to the family home in order to accommodate all of Mink’s medals
and trophies. Mink’s future does indeed look bright as she now focuses her
sights on the upcoming Asian Games, as well as on the Olympic Games in 2008.
Asian U staff and students wish her all the best for these and other
upcoming events.
Mink’s ‘Green Blazer’ presentation coincided with a ‘Drugs Awareness’
seminar conducted by Colonel Dr. Sumon Boonrod, army staff of the 14
Military Circleit: Navamintrathinee Army Camp, Chonburi. It was appropriate
to hold this seminar after Mink’s presentation, because sporting
achievements and the use of drugs are, of course, diametrically opposed. The
popularity of sport at Asian U provides an excellent example of how mental
and physical health continues to help young people avoid the destructive
temptations that drugs may seem to offer. Moreover, everyone at Asian U
feels that participation in sports is one of the ways in which this leading
international, educational institute, can cooperate with the local community
to develop a healthy and happy society in general and achieve excellence in
sport in particular.
In the future, Asian U plans to present the green jacket not only as an
award for sporting achievement, but also in recognition and appreciation of
those students who have served our own community by dedicating themselves to
improving Asian University’s sports facilities and by teaching, coaching and
mentoring their fellow students.
Education students visit
school to study
Students from an Udon
Thani university visited Assumption College Sriracha recently and met
with English teachers and the school’s Brother Director Suraksit Sukchai
(front, centre).
A group of university students recently visited
Assumption College Sriracha to pick up some tips on teaching.
Around 20 students who are studying for a Bachelor of Education degree
at the Ratchapat Udon Thani University came to the school.
They were given a tour of the school and met several English teachers.
Students were keen to see how Assumption works, and they were able to
ask the foreign teachers questions about their teaching methods.
They were especially interested in Assumption’s English Programme (EP).
There are EP classes in nearly every year group. Each class has
significantly fewer students than in other classes, and there are more
contact hours with English teachers.
Maths and science lessons are also taught in English.
The Udon Thani students were told that the EP scheme was going so well
that several more English teachers will be needed for the next academic
year, which begins in May.
Assumption will start recruiting soon for around a dozen new teaching
positions for native speakers. Anyone interested should hold a degree
and a recognised qualification for teaching English, such as a CELTA or
TEFL certificate. Assumption College Sriracha is a 40-minute drive from
Pattaya, and educates many students from Pattaya.
