In praise of St. Cecilia

The Anglican Congregation of St. George, which meets at the chapel in the Redemptorist Center off Sukhumvit Road, anticipated by about a month and celebrated the feast day of St. Cecilia, the patron saint of music and musicians.

Kimberly McGuinness hit the high notes superbly.

The service was enhanced by the presence of Kimberley McGuinness, a former opera singer with the Vienna Opera and member of the London Light Opera Company. She hit the high notes in what is a superbly built chapel with excellent acoustics much to the pleasure of the congregation.

Earlier, Kimberly McGuinness attended a Sunday meeting of the Pattaya City Expats Club. Kimberley, who is a friend of Thor and Helen Halland, members of the governing body of the club, flew into Thailand that morning with her family. She arrived at the meeting literally minutes before going on stage. As a past member of the Vienna Opera and the London Light Opera companies this was a new experience. However, rising to the occasion, she hit the high notes of some classic Gilbert and Sullivan songs and her renditions were much appreciated by the members.

Services are held every week at the chapel in the Redemptorist Center off Sukhumvit Road at 3 p.m. There will be a Remembrance Day Service on Sunday November 13, as a memorial to all who have died through war.

From Microsoft executive to Bangkok-based novelist: Bjorn Turmann’s story

The Pattaya City Expats Club welcomed film-maker and author, Bjorn Turmann recently at their Sunday meeting. In an informal presentation he revealed his career with special reference to his involvement in Thailand in general and Bangkok & Pattaya in particular.

Film-maker and author, Bjorn Turmann

Bjorn is a former Microsoft employee turned writer, university lecturer, creative entrepreneur and independent filmmaker who has had his works screened at festivals in Australia and Thailand. Bjorn is a frequent guest speaker at international seminars and tradeshows. He produced a short film “Postcards from Pattaya”, which is definitely an “art film” – almost no talking but the story moves along and the music is excellent (done by two 19-year-old Thai guys). It was shot in a (once) remote section of Jomtien.

Bjorn Turmann was born and raised in Vancouver and has made Southeast Asia his home for over twelve years. Bjorn spoke about the writing of his first novel, Good Daughter, and offered inspiration and encouragement to any aspiring writers, of whom there are a few in the PCEC.

He also spoke about his other on-going projects. He is currently working on his second book to be released in late 2006 and is already at the planning stage of a third. He has also made four short films in Thailand including a documentary entitled Benevolent Bodysnatchers about the famed rescue group, Poh Teck Tung, which was screened at the Bangkok Film Festival in 2002.

Bjorn and members of the club had enjoyed a relaxed evening at the Trattoria Toscana in Soi Marina on the Saturday evening and Bjorn left the club on Sunday to fly off to America on another speaking engagement and business.

Bookazine representatives were on hand with copies of Good Daughter and other literature.

To find out more about the events and meetings of the Pattaya City Expats Club go to www.pattayacityexpatsclub .com or go along to their meetings any Sunday at Henry J. Bean’s in the grounds of the Amari Orchid Resort 10.30. Buffet breakfast is available from 9.30 a.m. All meetings are free and open to everyone.
