ISE Students compete at sports competition in Laos

Kristina (Gr. 7)

The following is an excerpt from a Grade 7 student at the International School Eastern Seaboard (ISE) about a recent sports competition students traveled to in Vientiane, Laos.

Thursday morning at 4 o’clock we all arrived at ISE. Oh, boy, we were tired! We left ISE at 4:15 a.m. and two hours later we were at the airport. We split up and did what we had to do: duty free shopping, buying drinks, etc. Boarding, 55 minute flight, arrival and sight seeing. We saw temples and Vientiane. Then we went to Vientiane International School (VIS) where our host families picked us up. We had three hours left of the day, so our host-families took us somewhere or we stayed at home. Most of us went to sleep right away after dinner.

Friday morning, 8 o’clock, basketball game day. VIS vs. ISE. VIS won. Then five other games followed from different schools. Then it’s our turn again. Hanoi International School vs. ISE. We won! After three other games we played again. ISPP (Phnom Penh, Cambodia) vs. ISE. ISPP won, duh! They were the best team in the tournament. We were not in the finals, but we had lots of fun. Our host-families picked us up and we went home to have dinner and to take a shower. Urgently needed! Then back to VIS to watch the finals.

Next morning at 7:30 a.m.: at school for the cross-country runners. Tomoyuki, Muneaki and I were the three who ran. Three km around the lake and no shade. Absolutely awful. Tomoyuki got 10th place from the boys and I got 3rd place for the girls. Then volleyball at VIS. ISE won one game and some of us were scorekeepers. After our team spent hours in the heat we went home and got ready for the award-ceremony and dance at the “Kilometer 4” restaurant. Nam and Chote got team-all-stars for volleyball, Yuya and Seuk-Hyun got team-all-stars for basketball and Risako and I got team-all-stars for basketball. The awards were black oversized T-shirts telling the award on the back. I got a 3rd place cross-country T-shirt as well!

The dance was nice. Mr. Martin is an amazing dancer!

Sunday morning at VIS. Good-byes and hugs everywhere. Overall it was very enjoyable and pleasant trip.

Leadership training for the handicapped

Ariyawat Nuamsawat

Chonburi province is training handicapped people in leadership skills, and on April 26 Ronathep Anuwat, deputy chairman for the provincial administration organisation, opened a new project at Redemptorist Work Placement Centre in Pattaya.

Running through to May 1, the purpose of the programme was to help create self-confidence for handicapped people, so they can use their personal skills to take responsible roles in society.

Narin Sirimanathorn, former student leader at the Redemptorist School, presents a souvenir to Ronathep Anuwat, deputy chairman of Chonburi provincial administration organisation, who opened the project.

The Thai constitution of 1997 supports and encourages handicapped people to be more a part of society, and also supports their rights. For example, Section 30 states that such a person is equal in law. Section 55 lays out the rights of a handicapped or incapacitated person to receive a comfortable living in public and other support from the government. Section 80 says the government is obliged to ensure the handicapped or incapacitated people have a good quality of life and be independent.

Chonburi province was one of 11 to receive support from the country with a budget from the Lotto foundation to go towards training the impoverished, those who wouldn’t normally have a chance in society, the handicapped, vagabonds, orphans and victims of AIDS.

Physically challenged people who attend the training sessions receive helpful information.

The scheduled training project was for five groups, with six days each per group. There were 25 people per group, a total of 125 people.

Apart from training in Chonburi, similar programmes are being held at 10 other provinces, namely Chantaburi, Trat, Surin, Kanchanaburi, Nakhon Pathom, Phitsanulok, Chiang Mai, Phuket, Songkhla and Krabi. The development plan includes creating a nationwide link for handicapped leaders.
