ISE performs well at RIS Forensics meet

Each year RIS hosts a forensics, or speech, tournament for high school students. Schools from Bangkok, Chiang Mai, India and our local International School Eastern Seaboard compete at this event.

(Left to right) Top: Tashina and Nakita Cedolin, Masayuki Kobayashi, Aditya Van Daalen. Bottom: Ms. Brunhilde, Yei Won Lee, Jacky Mucha, Eva Fleming, Emma Gjers, Ms. Wood.

Students gain great experience by performing in front of audiences and observing very talented peers. Students from ISE participated in several categories of the competition.

Nakita Cedolin competed in the impromptu speech category. She had only one minute to prepare a three to five minute speech on a given topic.

With good friends on our team, there is no stopping us!

Aditaya Van Daalen did an oral interpretation. He read a humorous selection about dogs and cats from George Carlin’s book “Napalm and Silly Putty”.

Emma Gjers performed a solo act from the play The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-Moon Mariglods by Paul Zindel.

Who said forensics has to be boring?

Two students wrote their own original speeches and read them to the audience. Yei-Won Lee spoke about a Korean historical kingdom now claimed by China to be part of its history and identity. Masayuki Kobayashi informed the audience about Japanese anime and why we should support its production.

There were two pairs of duet actors. Tashina Cedolin and Eva Fleming performed a mother/daughter piece from the play A Roomful of Roses, while Nakita Cedolin and Jackey Mucha performed Career Counseling, where an honor student gets street advice from the school counselor.

ISE acting students all made it to the semi finals in the competition. Nakita and Jackey went on to win fourth place in the finals. Congratulations to all on a job well done!

GIS Sports Day was loads of fun

Sohini Goho

The long awaited Sports Day at Garden International School (GIS), Rayong was a gala event that started punctually at 8:00 a.m. on the 26th of February ’05. A whole lot of hard work had gone into the preparation and finally the day arrived and one could see the students, teachers and parents looked all geared up to take on the world!

The highlight of the day was also the presence of Anand Panyarachun, the ex-prime minister of Thailand, who is also GIS chairperson.

The arrangements were impressive with tents put up for the three houses – Gecko (Green), Cobra (Blue) and Tiger (Red). The students looked excited in their colourful house T-shirts. The tracks were well made out and the track events and the field events were well organized.

The fun races for the little ones were a great success, with the parents, teachers and of course Miss Ruth Grant, GIS principal on the mike, encouraging and cheering for the excited children. The favourite race was of course the “sweety race” that all children of the primary section were looking forward to – the reward being double – the sweet and the ribbon!

The favourite race was of course the “sweety race”.

The senior children seemed to be having an equally fun-filled day with events like long jump, shot put, tennis ball throw, triple jump, slow bike race and of course the track events.

The constant reminders to the participants to drink plenty of water and keep replenishing themselves with burgers and ice-creams showed the customary GIS touch.

The highlight of the day was also the presence of Anand Panyarachun, the ex-prime minister of Thailand, who is also GIS chairperson. A tree planting ceremony was held in the school premises where Anand Panyarachun planted saplings.

The day ended at around 1 p.m. The children went back hot and exhausted but with happy memories to brighten up their weekend. But despite the heat of the day, the Sports Day at GIS, Rayong was a grand success.
